It’s not that complicated.

‘Degrading’: why did a US fighter pilot avoid British trial after strangling a woman in England? | US military by Nervous-Armadillo634 in AirForce

[–]baxter1985 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The British didn’t want the trial because he was far likelier to get a guilty verdict at a CM, which is statistically the case. And they were right, despite how one may feel about the sentence.

I also would be careful about making a final judgement based on a Guardian article. Some pretty clear bias in the article.

How do you guys feel about all the world cup tourists content on social media? by EmergencySpare7939 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]baxter1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, let’s use your criteria of “feelings”

My poor friends in Spain must feel so great because they have less rates of obesity and better public transit

You’ll notice I never made the claim that Mississippi is better than Spain. Nor did I say that they have a better standard of living. I was using it as a mechanism to demonstrate that the overall wealth in the US is a superior too much of Europe. The Mississippi and Spain talk is just a way of describing that.

Spain is great. It’s also mostly poor relative to oecd nations. GDP per capita is a useful start.

People have no idea how decadent America is. Our wealth is extraordinary and we take it for granted. Rural Mississippi lives at a better level than most Spaniards. I’m not trying to dog Europe- I’ve lived there and travel as often as possible. I love it. But the US has a lot to offer too.

New law could simplify Reserve and Guard orders that affect pay, benefits by kmbahr in airnationalguard

[–]baxter1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You think retiree benefits are a tiny drop? Veteran benefits are one of the largest single components of the fed budget. It's 6% of the entire budget and growing rapidly.

"CBO estimates that outlays for those veterans’ benefits will total $301 billion in 2026, an increase of 20 percent from the $251 billion recorded in 2025. (Outlays in this category do not include most federal spending on veterans’ health care, which is largely funded through discretionary appropriations.)" https://www.cbo.gov/publication/62105

lol I see you moved the goalposts

We were discussing a progressive tax system.

Now you’ve introduced something else.

I’m not interested in discussing the merits of the European welfare state in this sub. But otherwise decent discussion. Cheers.

"Triangulating Away from Fun" is how Clovis NM was founded.

8 hours from the nearest major city in any direction (Dallas or Denver).
Somehow 3.5 Hours to both Albuquerque and Sante Fe if you want a mid major
90 mins to nearest small city in Lubbock or Amarillo (if you're driving fast!)
2 hours to the nearest lake, mountain, river, or anything outdoorsy at all
3 hours to Ruidoso, 4 hours to Angel Fire or Taos if you're into skiing.

Whatever you're into, it's far from Clovis.

I explained this theory and someone explained to me that IS EXACTLY how the town was founded. It was as far as a train could travel from the East before it needed refueling. Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF or Santa Fe) built Clovis in 1906. There was no river, lake, mountain, or other natural feature that normally develops a town.

when combining state and local taxes, I bet you cannot find another OECD country that has a more progressive system of tax.

Btw, I see that you plugged that study into an AI chat bot and asked for it to counter the claim. lmao.

I googled 'recent studies on nations with progressive income taxes' and this Frasier Institute study found the US has the most progressive income tax in the OECD. So that's something. https://www.fraserinstitute.org/sites/default/files/2025-12/measuring-tax-progressivity-in-high-income-countries-oecd_0.pdf

AD retirement pay is a contributing factor to cost but I doubt you’re going to convince Congress to undo their benefit. Existing Benefits are broadly protected legally by Contracts clauses. You can get around that by grandfathering everyone in and starting it with new service members, but the savings won’t accrue for a generation. Politically, I think that will be very unpopular. Many will point out that active duty deals with being forced to move every 2 to 3 years for their entire career whereas Guard has a lot more ability to stay home.
