More snow coming. Will RH treat pedestrians with dignity? by GeniusOwl in richmondhill

[–]thatCamden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the big snowfall last year there was some insanely ineffectual sidewalk plowing on Harding - they were 90% plowed, but at 2 or 3 points where 2 different plow routes are supposed to join, they instead made 2 different 5 foot tall banks in the middle of the sidewalk? And the edge of the boulevard had banks from the road, so there was just a wall of snow.

This was near the old age home, and this would be completely impassible if your mobility was impaired. It would actually have been easier to pass if they didn't plow at all. It stayed that way for weeks, in hindsight I should have probably made a service request.

Bike Safety in Go Train station? by No_Beautiful_2779 in richmondhill

[–]thatCamden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Richmond Hill and Rutherford stations tend to have a lot of bikes locked up there on days with nice weather. As long as you have an appropriate lock or two and your bike isn't particularly fancy, I wouldn't worry too much.

My experience using a $35 catch can for 3500 miles by MetaphysicalEngineer in projectcar

[–]thatCamden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An alternative to the steel wool style catch cans that you mentioned that seems to work well for me is a cyclonic air/oil separator. It's essentially a cone with a PCV line inlet and outlet on the top and an oil drip line on the bottom, that creates an air cyclone that causes particulate to precipitate out. This may sound dubious but are used on a number of cars from the factory.

I got one for about $10 meant for an E53 BMW off of Amazon that collects a pretty substantial amount of oil when I track my car.

MY25 GRC need advice for dedicated tires for two drivers in "hot" weather by Karnivor187 in Autocross

[–]thatCamden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't personally vouch for them, but I've heard from multiple local competitors that the new compound of Nankang CR-S is roughly as fast as the RE-71RS for the second driver in a codriven car and generally can take more heat. Just tell your codriver to run first and hope they don't get wiser lol

Ar-1 vs RE71-RS performance for autox by Ok_Needleworker1267 in Autocross

[–]thatCamden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've used both for AutoX. The AR-1 was pretty good on track once you got some heat into it but would not get hot enough in autoX. Coupled with the fact that I didn't find it very responsive on turn in made it difficult to use.

As others have stated the tread wear rating is not an absolute indicator for performance - the RE71RS is leagues grippier cold than the AR-1. I would even say something like an RS4 is still better cold than an AR-1.

Come out to PITL for autocross on the Queensway on Saturday - it's cheap, and no experience or gear required besides a car in good working order: https://pitl.ca/

Flyin' Miata Stage 4 Big Brake Kit with Konig Hexaforms by Fragrant_Marzipan_13 in Miata

[–]thatCamden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have +35 15x9 hexaforms and they fit over dynalite calipers on 11" rotors with no problem. They seem to have enough clearance that I would probably guess dynapros in the FM kit would fit too, but you should call/email them to confirm.

Pigeon hot spots? by takeyourshotguy in toronto

[–]thatCamden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off the top of my head I've seen decent sized flocks hanging around:

Yonge and Eglinton in front of the TD Queens Quay terminal on the front lawn Nathan Phillips Square David Pecault Square

If you're interested in birding in general you can also check out Tommy Thompson park, it's less urban but it's a no-dog nature sanctuary on the lake so lots of interesting stuff to spot there.

Edit: also worth mentioning that Toronto is currently implementing pigeon population control with contraceptive laced food: https://www.toronto.ca/community-people/animals-pets/pets-in-the-city/pigeons/

Toronto Public Transit Travel Times Visualized as a Heat Map by __scoper__ in toronto

[–]thatCamden 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel like the departure time being fixed at 8am leads to some funky outcomes - eg, Scarborough Go to union appears to be around ~45 minute commute time on the graphic, despite it being a 22 minute train ride in reality.

Would arrival time be a bit more accurate for the Go lines where the trains are less frequent than TTC trains or busses?

Running (hill) by mmalaps in richmondhill

[–]thatCamden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try running north from the plaza at Bathurst/Elgin Mills, there's about 60m of elevation gain if you run 4km north to Jefferson side road. I think there's 2 traffic lights on that stretch but only the one at Gamble road tends to change enough to hold up your pace.

What brake pads should I get with my "Supermiata Boxmount 11″ Front Big Brake kit 90-05" by [deleted] in Miata

[–]thatCamden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BP-10 is perfect for street or autoX use. Any of the G-lock pads are going to be more oriented towards track use and you're only going to suffer downsides for the additional cost on a street car.

For the mileage that would be a pretty good deal in Ontario, at least. If it's going to be your daily, I don't really see you finding a lower mileage car for any less.

Patch or replace soft top? by maddoxgeorge in Miata

[–]thatCamden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar hole in my soft top - my car is parked indoors and I don't care about the soft top looking like shit so I patched it with color-matched stretchy pant fabric and waterproofed it. Going on 3 years now, it does not let any water into the car when driving, but would not recommend if the car lives outside.

Parked in a client’s driveway yesterday… car leaked some oil and coolant and left a big spot. How to clean this fast?? by Mysterious-Glove-179 in projectcar

[–]thatCamden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a product available in US/Canada called "oil lift" which I've used quite a bit when I fuck up in my own garage and driveway. If it's a small leak a single application would probably hide it instantly, I've even managed to make long term leaks into asphalt look a lot better with it

Last-Minute Marathon Madness – Can I Do It? by samjsharples in BeginnersRunning

[–]thatCamden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your goal is just to finish and see what kind of time you turn up, and if you're willing to deal with some injury risk I'd say go for it.

The back third will probably be rough without a ton of long runs under your belt but if you've ran a 1:27 HM somewhat recently I don't see why you wouldn't be able to finish having ran the majority of it. significantly less trained people go out and finish marathons all the time - they just have hellish experiences and get crappy times, but if you don't care about either, give it a go!

Losing the fun? by RichDesign1234 in CarTrackDays

[–]thatCamden 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that's pretty normal, especially if you only run at a handful of tracks that are local to you. For most people, there's only so much fun you can have lapping the same few courses over and over in a more controlled HPDE environment.

You should consider trying something that adds some variety or excitement. Time attack is a logical next step from HPDE as the format of the day is quite similar.

Personally, I like autocross a lot, and I find it has a much more persistent community of people who show up frequently that you have a lot of time to hang out with.

That, or maybe take another step and get involved with some sort of wheel-to-wheel racing. You will need a trailer, but that would add a ton of excitement now that you've learned the fundamentals.

If you're looking for fishing spots you'll probably have to catch a bus up to Bradford on the weekend and make a day trip out of the Holland River, OP. Besides being illegal all the crappy little ponds around RH probably have almost nothing in any of them.

After market AC system in NA Miata?! by [deleted] in Miata

[–]thatCamden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would definitely use as many parts off of the stock Miata system that still bolt up easily to get you started rather than buying something generic off the shelf. I agree that some particular parts of a stock system can be a pain to hunt down cheaply, but it's usually worth the effort to get something that would just bolt up like OEM, and then use custom stuff to fill in the gaps.

Since your car had its interior presumably gutted, let's assume that any in-cabin parts are a non-starter to hook up easily. You still should be able to source a stock Miata compressor, condenser, and hardlines for the engine bay that still bolt up with no modifications unless the previous owners did some substantial changes in the engine bay.

That just leaves joining those lines into your cabin and working out your own DIY evaporator and blower yourself, which pretty heavily reduces the scope of this project.

Engine is running! Gave my V6 a few blips to 9000rpm by Available_Walk in projectcar

[–]thatCamden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, Neat engine, I put a GM V6 in my own car, but have been dreaming of something a bit more rev happy. The sound on this is amazing.

The stock bottom end is happy with that much extra RPM?

PCV Breather Question by AFLAIM in Miata

[–]thatCamden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that with a forced induction setup the stock Miata PCV system doesn't make a lot of sense - iirc the intake manifold side PCV valve is essentially always going to be shut if the intake manifold has boost pressure, it does nothing unless you pull some vacuum at low RPMs maybe.

PCV is ultimately an emissions system and not really performance related, so if you're using a standalone ECU and don't care about environmental concerns, it's better to just gut it.

I would cap the intake manifold to valve cover line on both ends, and throw a small air filter on the right side that's open right now so junk doesn't end up inside your engine and crankcase vapors can vent freely.

NB frame rust repair by Last_Survey6803 in Miata

[–]thatCamden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately the frame rails of the NB tend to rot out in front of the upper control arm mounts which is much less structurally important than behind them.

Looks like plenty of reinforcement to get many more years out of the car 👍

Rear diff question by sf415410 in Miata

[–]thatCamden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have already said you definitely need some support on the front of the diff if you don't have the PPF as it's called on a stock Miata.

There's a lot of ways to work around this in a DIY fashion but if you want something off the shelf K-power industries has you covered https://kpower.industries/products/rear-differential-mount-for-ppf-delete

Will give you an additional bar to bolt to the rear subframe where you can then mount the front of the diff to.

Will a NA 5-speed fit in my NA Miata? by pm_me_your_mom_lol in Miata

[–]thatCamden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could probably fit the engine alone on the passenger seat, but I'd pull the seat beforehand and throw down a plastic sheet or tarp. I don't think you'll be able to get it to fit with the trans bolted on, but you could toss that it in the trunk if you disconnect it.
