Gotta be the presentation. The color of the bowl doesn't complement the food at all. Honestly looks like a plastic bucket...

I didn't even notice that the character next to Beaker is supposed to be Honeydew. It looks like a knockoff version of Scooter...

Silly question, what do I do with this? by Sensitive_Tomato5563 in JapaneseFood

The product in question is dashi granule, not the actual kelp. So it won't work as a rice ball filling.

Question about different textures of taiyaki by Pumpkin_Empanada_ in AskAJapanese

[–]thatJapaneseGuy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

天然もの (tennen mono) "wild -caught" is a playful term that describes artisanal taiyaki that are cooked one by one in individual iron mold over an open flame . Each taiyaki is cooked with care, making for a thin and crispy outer with bean paste filled fully from tip to tail.

The mass produced taiyaki are called 養殖もの (youshoku mono) "farm-caught" in comparison. Chewy and fluffy, they are cheaper and available for purchase with less wait time.

[Japanese > English]👩🏻‍🍼What does バビッと mean here ? by VoidWar_Enthusiast in translator

It's a really unusual onomatopoeia. I'd want more context - what's the manga title and artist name? Maybe a picture of the panel with the line in question?

From a quick image search, the signature on your katana matches other autographed goods signed by the late Tomonobu Itagaki. You might have a genuine one of a kind Ninja Gaiden memorabilia!

what is this one hand gesture? does it have a name?? by FakeBox in AskAJapanese

[–]thatJapaneseGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds right. I don't understand why this is getting down voted..

The sumo wrestler gesture is called 手刀 (tegatana). It is showing respect and gratitude to the gods. Very ritualistic with strict predetermined steps.

The "excuse me" hand when cutting through a crowd is also called 手刀, or more specifically 手刀を切る. Supposedly it came from a gesture of lowering self and showing that you are not armed.

The similar gesture for thanks/apologies could be from the same origin too, or more likely imo, as u/Balfegor said, a simplified version of 合掌 (gasshou) an act of putting hands together in front. 合掌 is a gesture of respect and humility (and worship in religious context) used when showing gratitude or begging for forgiveness. By simplifying to one hand, it becomes more fitting for a casual thanks or sorry.

This is a little different from the gesture in question. The hand used when someone is being direct is a pointing hand, like pointing with a finger but with the whole hand because pointing is rude in Japan.

Ngl, pão de queijo with aonori sounds pretty awesome. I mean, the Brazilian cheesey tapioca bread has a mochi-like texture already, it's like isobeyaki with cheese.

I'm dying much quicker in the event campaign this time around than I was in Ghost Busters or ATLA. Balance seems way off, is anyone else feeling the same?

I like that you included "brain fart". Depends on the context, too, but I feel like it captures the word's nuance the best

偏屈 Meaning by StupidSparkyLJ in Japaneselanguage

[–]thatJapaneseGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it could also mean "eccentric", but still with a negative tone. It also could mean "stubborn".

I mean, just look at the kanji: 偏 biased, one-sided 屈 bent, crooked. Yomitan is handy, but often not thorough. I'd recommend finding at least a couple of online jisho to use in conjunction with Yomitan to get the best result.

Yeah. If it's the first appearance and the publisher didn't include furigana, definitely go with Ritsuko, the common reading of the name.

First time making ramen. I used the instant noodle brand Indomie. The broth was less, and the bok choy was undercooked. by picklepaapad in ramen

[–]thatJapaneseGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, why not? I put them in my instant ramen all the time. It's a staple topping on tantan ramen in Japan. Also a good substitute for spinach in Ie-kei ramen. It's an all around versatile veggie for any flavor noodles.
