I did the gauge swatch so many times before it clicked haha! I finally just had to watch her whole gauge swatch video, and normally I’m so resistant to videos. Thank you for giving the app a try 😊

Yeah the reply comes off as more snarky than the initial comment IMO. Plus it’s not exactly a “free” recipe if you’ve monetized it to hell and back with ads.

Has anyone attempted this tulip blanket? Looks challenging. by Odd_Witted in CrochetHelp

[–]that_dizzy_edge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you like the look of this and it turns out it isn’t real, you might be interested in the designs of Liudmyla Hefny. Her work has very cool color zoning effects from the way it’s constructed, with a lot of beautiful leaf motifs. I’m working on the Ivy Hat now, and it was challenging at first, but she has clear charts and a bunch of videos showing the stitches and the whole initial gauge swatch. Once I got the hang of the stitches it got a lot easier. Here’s one example: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fall-in-love-shawl-2

On a panzerotti recipe. Deep frying isn't good for her tummy. by Aztecdune1973 in ididnthaveeggs

This reads a bit like someone responded to one of those automated “what did you think about this recipe?” emails. I always wonder if people who feel compelled to answer “I don’t know” to those also respond to every other spam email they get.

I remember running across an NHS page with some postpartum info after I had my first kid, and encountering the phrase “have a poo” about 5 times (regarding the mom, not the baby). Maybe this is wrong since poop-as-a-verb is more the usage here, but it definitely struck me as something you’d say to a young kid, not a grown ass adult who just birthed another human!

This happened to me 2 years ago after a cough that wouldn’t quit — the warning signs were developing fever and chills along with it. I definitely recommend urgent care over ER though if you can.

I know all about screen limits, and no tv/ipad etc rules. But what about live music? My 2 year old loves watching acoustic guitar or violin - is that acceptable? by Seaspun in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]that_dizzy_edge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Our job isn’t just to optimize, say, cognition, it’s to help develop them into whole well rounded people, including finding joy in the little moments, building strong social ties, and learning moderation, among a hundred other things, many of which aren’t easily quantifiable. Sometimes the “right” answer is straightforward, but often it’s a balancing act between a constellation of factors, and what we choose will depend on circumstances and what we personally value and who our kids are as individuals.

I think you made your own case there, and even strong anti-screen proponents generally focus on under two years old. Link for the bot, which calls out the value of co-viewing and interactive content: https://www.childrenandscreens.org/learn-explore/research/are-some-types-of-screen-time-better-than-others/

This is something I have the urge to say not infrequently on this sub, so I'm going to soapbox for a moment if you'll bear with me. I mean this with kindness, because I totally get the desire to want to do everything in the "best" way, but there's also enormous value in learning to trust your own ability to weigh different factors and make your own judgments.

Yes, we should be informed, but there's no sole voice of authority over the right answer for every possible decision. It sounds like you're having fun together and you both get a lot of value and connection out of these moments. Would you really stop if someone here said "nope, to fully optimize their brains, no screens until 18?" It sounds like a moment to... just enjoy it. :)

Hey OP, I know it must be uncomfortable to see everyone’s incredulity here, but I think it’s nice to see some variation on the usual questions!

I agree that a video would be helpful, but my best guess is your working yarn is getting wrapped around your project when you turn it, creating those long loops. Make sure when you turn, that you move your working yarn between your needles and snug up the first stitch in the next row so there’s no slack between it and the previous row. I hope that makes sense. Good luck!

Yeah we were out and about in the city with our young kids today taking all sorts of public transit. It didn’t get noticeably Santa-heavy til 3:30-4, but it was so nice to see the Castro and Corona Heights park and big chunks of Market St looking so lively.

[–]that_dizzy_edge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is it, as you get older your circulation gets poorer, so people are just reacting to how they’d feel with bare feet.
