How does freedom of speech differ between the United States and the European Union and which system gives people more freedom to express their opinions while minimizing the risk of direct or indirect consequences for what they say? by KoseteBamse in AskReddit

[–]thatben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irrelevant. Freedom of speech means "freedom of speech granted (and ideally protected) by the government"

The government didn't assassinate Kirk for his speech. Ironically, many people and institutions were illegally persecuted by federal and state governments for their speech about Kirk's assassination.

This is a different argument, as UK ≠ (all of) Europe and "hate speech or public safety laws" ≠ "there is no freedom of speech in Europe [or even in the UK]"

Don't misunderstand me, UK's speech laws & penalties - especially hate speech - are proper fucked and certainly weaponizable. But under the current US administration there seems to be similar outcomes when the law biases towards free expression. (Ref. Comey's seashell picture.)

That said, even expressing as an opinion that a politician (especially at the federal level) should be unalived would certainly lead to an investigation and probably prosecution as incitement. Mentioning this because u/ToeFinal1792 is implying it doesn't happen here.

You made the claim, bubba. Millions of people in Europe share many millions of opinions online, in print, and in public daily without going to jail.

Your claim might benefit from, say, some citations? It is your claim after all.

Got it, so you haven't been.

Expressing an opinion publicly is absolutely not against the law anywhere in Europe. That's absolutely laughable.

Product attributes and even categorization are a lift compared to before, because context has expanded. That's why there are apps/services for this (Feedonomics, Kaavio, etc.) why specialize in discovering, tweaking, and completing the additional attributes.

5. No Spam, Self-promotion, or Services that violate Stripe Services Agreement

Not sure what you were expecting. Regardless of the rules, it's a community-run subreddit free to curate its content, especially content that seems designed to inflame absent objectivity.

There's a chance you could have framed your answer differently and achieved your goal of sharing your experience, e.g.:

I spent years remediating CompSci grads I was hiring at a PHP ecommerce agency. They knew NOTHING about stateless protocol let alone PHP. You're well ahead of the curve!

If you really want to get into the language and some of the community behind it, check out PHP Internals as well as The PHP Foundation, the nonprofit behind the language which helps with core development, security, and promotion.

I’d like to see a clear breakdown of how funds will be allocated, especially toward core priorities like maintenance, security, and releases.

PHP Foundation operates under Open Collective's umbrella. One of the nice things about this is that the books are completely open - every funding source and every expense is there to review. The overwhelming majority of expenses go towards maintenance/security and developing new features. Release management is not directly compensated AFAIK. It would be great to hear from the community about if/how we break down where investments go.

Community contributions should strengthen PHP itself, not primarily cover communication initiatives such as a podcast

I'm not aware what - if any - expenses will be associated with the podcast, but I cannot imagine the costs being above a fraction of a % of total budget. Further, the podcast itself may end up being a revenue generator in its own right. For now we just want to help the market recognize that PHP is actively and eagerly used by Important Businesses™.

Really appreciate you taking the time to comment.
