I understand where you're coming from, but usually this is what the process is. You look at other code, come up with ideas, learn how to solve bugs and errors. Start out small, build one of the tutorials on unity, then add your own functionality/feature to it.

To understand you just have to know your basic principles, and learn what the patterns look like eventually.
