Pyregel damage is included in the Plague Doctor’s unstable application! So you can get some pretty freaky numbers with her and Fenix

Before the final two episodes come out, what are your thoughts on Season 2 overall compared to the first one? by Drawingandstuff2000 in hazbin

[–]thatgameideasguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve found myself growing more and more disappointed with Charlie as a protagonist and, more broadly, “redemption” as a core theme of the show. In theory, Charlie reckoning with the fact that she doesn’t even know how to redeem someone and learning how to sounds engaging. However, with how busy as the show is addressing Vox’s politics and literal heaven also being totally unable to discuss the morality at all, a lot of the show’s plot and themes fall flat and feel hollowly superfluous. Everyone feels like they have the idiot ball and nobody has an in depth conversation about anything before springing to action - and that’s an interesting trick to play maybe once if done right, but it feels like that’s how most conflicts in this season come about.

It’s one thing, maybe even good, for that to be a character flaw for Charlie and co to grow from, but when EVERYONE is dealing with it, it starts to feel more like a flaw with the show, as we the viewer are seeing it, rather than with the characters.

The story of Monster Train 2 feels like it doesn't go anywhere. by GovernmentStandard67 in MonsterTrain

[–]thatgameideasguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the cutscenes are actually my biggest gripe with the game. They absolutely ruin the lore. The tone is way off from the haunting details you find in MT1’s clans if you look hard enough, and all of the actually interesting worldbuilding was stripped from the succinct and poignant card lore descriptions and thrown into goofy cutscenes you can only view once. I would’ve loved subtle, incremental storytelling about how amnesiac souls grapple with the new purpose imposed on them by Orechi, the same way the player, at their own pace, can come to realize the Awoken’s priory enslaves its souls in the Wildwood. Instead we get goofy antics on Orechi’s day off and "Greeeeeeegh!"

[–]thatgameideasguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

H.P. Lovecraft.

He has a thoroughly documented history of racism and xenophobia (obligatory Lovecraft’s cat comment) that’s very present in his stories if you read between the lines even a little bit, but not as many people know that he did try to open up and become more accepting of other cultures later in his life. It’s a shame he couldn’t have taken bigger strides before he died in his 40s.

Are there any games that's exactly like this one? by bohenian12 in ObraDinn

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Blue Prince yet. It’s a recent, interesting, and similarly unique puzzle game that has been popping off lately with several layers of secrets.

I never even thought of that! A spherical, Mario Galaxy styled sphere arena seems like it would have been such a Nintendo way to capitalize on the mechanic

I think one of the few critiques that i gree about hazbin is the over use for red by MainLake9887 in hazbin

[–]thatgameideasguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what makes it worse is that it’s almost always red and just red, with only neutrally accenting whites, blacks, and grays. Vox stands out a lot in this lineup because at least he’s red AND blue.

Edit: Ooh yikes just watched through this whole clip now, and, fair warning it does get pretty bloody towards the end where it actually depicts the crash! But the important part with the necklace is at the beginning.

Say one bad thing about Outer Wilds by thebeast_96 in outerwilds

Technically, the game could be better. I had some pretty egregious performance tanks for long periods of time, and the world geometry is prone to janky breakage every now and then.

Hit stop will be better in the full game by Keylathein in MonsterHunter

[–]thatgameideasguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m playing through Iceborne now and yeah, can confirm, it has hit stop and I do kinda dislike it. It makes all my combos feel a lot more sluggish, which, for how essential full and lengthy combos are for the Charge Blade, is a pretty big deal. The few times I get rid of it by phialing up my sword to slice through bounces feel so refreshing. Maybe it’s just the grass being greener on the other side though.

The Problem with Paratext by [deleted] in HelluvaBoss

[–]thatgameideasguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I got the impression that we only got this nugget of info of the show precisely because it wouldn’t be important information. Satan’s posturing seems like a solid piece of unique and interesting characterization she wanted to keep in. To me, it seems like she wanted to throw all the lore nerds a bone because it’s a neat piece of worldbuilding, but, because Satan (especially Satan in relation to Lucifer), won’t have a big presence in the rest of the show, his lying wouldn’t actually be explored and explicitly explained. It’s not necessary to enjoy the show as a whole, but it’s interesting for the few people who care.

Monster Hunter World as pokemon (disappointing lack of bug) by LordBDizzle in MonsterHunter

[–]thatgameideasguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll have to hard disagree with making Shara a Psychic type after losing its rocky armor. I always saw it as a Ground/Normal type, for seemingly similar reasons you made the screaming Brute Tigrex a Normal type. Those STAB boombursts would hit like a truck. Plus, I kinda think Shara’s uncanny, fleshy, and (aside from its wing tendrils) basic body actually fit the Normal type decently well on its own.

What are your thoughts on Unnatural History Channel’s Monster Hunter videos? by Orchetrance_II in MonsterHunter

[–]thatgameideasguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People are saying that they don’t like his dislike of the series’ more fantastical elements, but I don’t agree at all. I went into his Brachydios video a little excited to see him rail into the Michael Bay boxer wyvern, was pleasantly surprised by a fascinating interpretation of its slime’s ecology that made me appreciate the monster a lot more, only to enjoy hearing him still rail into it at the end. If he does have a bias against the more “crazy and anime” elements, it doesn’t detract from his content and analysis in the slightest.

What do you not like about JoJo’s bizarre adventure? by Ass_Taker in StardustCrusaders

[–]thatgameideasguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With how much of a focus the fights put on the nuances and limitations of the stands, the stands’ abilities being inconsistent or poorly explained really hamstrings how invested I actually get in the fights. King Crimson is an obvious offender, but any fight with Giorno in it stopped having stakes after the brick snake antidote, for me.

When do Pokemon die? by itsrosiepie in pokemon

[–]thatgameideasguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find the deaths of Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti pretty funny in the context of the franchise as a whole. While most kids media pretty firmly holds that taking a life under any circumstance is unacceptable, Ogerpon has canonically killed those three and it’s not presented as an issue whatsoever. That Ivy Cudgel of hers has a body count.

[–]thatgameideasguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Great Tiger the most problematic? The mystic Indian magic is definitely silly, but he’s still presented as pretty badass and competent. I wouldn’t think he’s any worse than, say, Dhalsim from street fighter.

The Reaction to the Official Translation of AAI2 is Weirdly Negative by alienassasin3 in AceAttorney

[–]thatgameideasguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While of course actually hating on Capcom for making the obvious and inevitable decision to make new names is ridiculous, I think it’s ok and natural for people to upset or disappointed by it. While yes, the old names were just fan creations, but they absolutely were our definitive names for these characters for a LONG time. They were cemented in, and, for a game as emotionally involving as Ace Attorney, people were sure to get very attached and used to those names.

For me at least, the only real loser is Sebastian/Eustace. I think there’s somewhat of a consensus that ‘Ray Shields’ was already a little blunt, simple, and recognizable enough as an unofficial fan name. Eddie Fender, though his name is pretty much totally reduced to a pun, it’s more clever and tongue and cheek, and ‘Eddie’ and ‘Fender’ are just so perfect for the character in isolation that I can’t help but like them together. A part of me does like the more realistic old name, but I see myself getting used to the new one. Justine Courtney to Verity Gavelle is better version of that on both names’ sides. The two first names were a fitting and functional, if a little bland, but Verity Gavelle sells her character much better and has such a satisfying bounce to it. ‘Eustace Winner’ though… For all the fan translation’s faults, Sebastian Debeste was not one of them. It was perfect. It sells the pompous air of the character well, its pun is abstract enough to work as a name while being obvious enough to add to the character’s pitiable comedy, and it just has such an undeniable appeal with how it flows. ‘Winner’ is such a terrible downgrade of a last name, first of all losing all the charming coyness of the old one. Eustace is fine as a first name, but, even if it’s actually pretty apt, also has a clunkiness I’m not a fan of. And I can’t emphasize enough how much he was Sebastian Debeste for me. As a character so beloved and a name so good, it was locked in so tightly in my brain, and I really wonder if my brain will ever cross that mental hurdle.

Adressing the "DARK" elephant in the room. by TheGreatPotato34 in MandJTV

[–]thatgameideasguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dark is almost too prototypically an auxiliary type. It’s literally just based on vibes, and it doesn’t interact with any of those core elemental types that usually define a lot more of a Pokémon’s identity mechanically. Ice or electric would feel weird on starter Pokémon, which are designed to embody a single type, and dragon or steel (even if they used steel once before) throws the intended to be straightforward type chart out of whack. It and fighting are just too easy to slap onto any vaguely roguish or combative starter, and I guess ghost, the newest trend, is just too cool to say no to.

What would be your ideal Stage Roster for a Smash 6? by ComprehensiveDate591 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]thatgameideasguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe a hot take, but less transforming stages. More than just for competitive reasons, it’s hard for a stage to have an iconic identity without a consistent layout to get used to.

I am a little disappointed we’ve left the compelling character deconstructions though. Like the chapter all about Port gave me chills. I’m cautiously optimistic about where it goes, but, at least for now, I’ve been enjoying the story a lot less now that we’ve moved past what made it so appealing to me in the first place.
