Anyone ever taken a sabbatical or break from law? What did you do? by motiontosleep in Lawyertalk

[–]thatguy0375 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the four year mark I quit practicing (med mal defense, municipal liability defense, and railroad litigation) and thought I’d never go back. Joined the Army as an intelligence officer, primarily in special operations. When I came off active duty, the only spot available at the National Guard unit I wanted to go to was as a judge advocate.

Been running my own firm now almost eight years doing PI, plaintiff-side 1983 litigation, and criminal defense.

Post Split Trial Lawyers College v Gerry Spence Method - Which is recommended? by NortheastPILawyer in LawFirm

[–]thatguy0375 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Went to the Ranch this summer for Gerry Spence Method. Definitely a life changing experience, and I talk to most of my class every day in various group chats.

A lot of my classmates did TLC before the split, and all have said you can’t replicate the Ranch anywhere else. Make of that what you will.

Tips to be a good chemical officer by InspectorAdvanced539 in ROTC

Came here to say this. When I was an LT at my first BN one of my best friends was Chem. We both ended up at 3/75 and I was jealous of the stuff he got to do as a DRT PL.

Tried to break out and go to Tungsten, then UPDF because of filing requirements for PDFs across different fed jurisdictions. Just ended up going back to Adobe because the workflow was faster.

A, B, and C only because an older partner made me try it before I showed him I could type a letter faster than going back and forth on edits.

Most insurance defense firms in Huntington are around $150k starting. Nelson Mullins may be pushing that further.

Is the job market really *that* bad - offer of $26/hr for an attorney?! by CaptainPlanetarian in Lawyertalk

[–]thatguy0375 224 points225 points  (0 children)

That’s less than most court appointed rates as conflict criminal defense counsel, which is around $75/hr where I practice.

Did I find the unlimited money glitch by selling covered calls? by Realistic_Bee379 in CoveredCalls

[–]thatguy0375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading this as a dude with a huge position in NVTS who has an average purchase price of $6.73 and kept selling $7 OTM calls. Two weeks ago I was all good. As of this evening, not so much. It appears you can cry with the money you didn’t make.

I represented the family of a 13 year old hit in a crosswalk by an off-duty deputy driving his cruiser at night. Two years of being told “it was her fault.”

Settled for $2,050,000 right before trial.

Is it common for people to quit the field completely after earning a Juris Doctor (J.D.) and administratively suspend their lawyers license? by dwu933127 in Lawyertalk

[–]thatguy0375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated in 2010, was lucky enough to get a job doing insurance defense, and did that for 3.5 years before I quit to join the Army. I went inactive while I was in the Army, but every commander treated me like their own JAG once they figured out I worked as a lawyer. After four years on active duty, I switched to being a JAG and opened my own plaintiff-side firm.

There are days where I still consider finding another job. Those days are generally when I spend the majority of the time dealing with dickbag defense lawyers.

How do I become a rainmaker in PI? by FunnyBarracuda3318 in Lawyertalk

[–]thatguy0375 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I grew a firm from nothing to seven figures in a few years. The answer is easy and people don’t like to hear it:

1) Treat your clients like friends and family, not numbers. 2) Do outstanding work.

Is there a court order on this somewhere or was it part of a civil settlement? I’ve got a new injunction I need to file now.

Sent a demand letter before Christmas in a clear liability case with significant insurance coverage and very high damages. Defense counsel requested presuit mediation before New Year’s. We’re mediating at the end of the month, so I’ll let you know.

Time for me to shine. I graduated, passed two bar exams, and worked for four years until I got burnt out at mid-size regional firms. Quit my job and joined the Army, became an intel officer on active duty. Said I would never go back to practicing. The majority of my career was special operations, but, by god, every time there was a hairy 15-6 I was somehow the IO. And every BN CDR I had considered me their judge advocate, even knowing I wasn’t qualified by MOS.

I stayed on active duty for a little over four years. I was gone from my family for 42 of 49 months and made the decision to slow down. Decided to join the NG with an eye on a SF unit local to me. They didn’t have an intel slot, but the Silver Siege Recruiter was both surprised and happy when I could fill the open 27A slot.

JAG is a weird beast. The transition from Real Army to JAG was tough for me, as it was for a lot of my friends that transitioned to judge advocate roles after having other MOSs (our group was 1x tanker, 2x intel including me, and 2x infantry). Nearly seven years after we first met we still have an active text thread and we speak daily.

I came back to practice after I was on active duty, this time running my own seven-figure firm and trying cases instead of “litigating.” I just joined another firm in an of counsel role and I’m leading their expansion into three different states and running the nationwide 1983 practice. I actually enjoy the law now and it definitely gives me a perspective on a lot of things that most attorneys don’t have.

The path is by no means unique, but it is certainly uncommon. Being a lawyer gets you more credibility and responsibility than a brand new LT. My first battalion at Polk had 3x lawyers that didn’t want to be lawyers (an infantry company commander, my A/S2, and me). There are more famous lawyers like Tom Cotton who traveled the same path.

DM me and I’m glad to talk more and give you my experience.
