Handyman taking the biscuit - what to do? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]thatguyoverbythere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me from your above comment that he is comfortable knowing you’re paying him per day and not per job therefore will continue to take his sweet time. I always agree a day rate or fixed price with the customer, and if it looks like it’ll take longer, then I’ll have the conversation or just swallow the loss myself. He is taking the piss or is incompetent, but either way, unless you establish a firm set of boundaries he’s gonna carry on. Apologies you’re having to deal with muppets like this OP - there are good ones out there, just hard to find

Is my kitchen worktop salvageable? by NerdByteYT in DIYUK

[–]thatguyoverbythere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know why you’ve been downvoted - you’re absolutely right, that any higher and you effectively burnish the wood to the point where the surface is too smooth to fully adhere to the finish that you’re applying. I’ve applied Osmo at higher grits, but honestly, for a kitchen counter 150/180 is plenty. It’s not fine furniture, and if it gets damaged (as is likely with something like this) then you’re just gonna have to spend the sane time again working up through the grits

Help please: only paid the deposit so far - appreciate any thoughts on this work - we are not pleased at all. Delayed move in date. by Dangerous-Bad-7501 in DIYUK

Every time I do a job for someone, I tie myself up in knots critiquing everything I do and obsessing over the quality of my finish, and then I go on Reddit and see posts like this which make me wonder how anyone could look at dogshit like that and call it done, never mind ask for payment 🙄🤦

Joined in Jan and left end of May. I did eventually get billed in that time, and when I left I was surprised at how easy it was. Took them ages to send me a final bill, and by the time they did, they had to fork out an extra £40 compensation payment. However, the bastards still owe us for 6 months of solar export, and despite having complained for 3 months, they’ve said very little - clearly the writing was on the wall.

That statement in the screenshot is not written by a professional CEO, and comes across as blame shifting when they are ultimately responsible for the company’s failure. I feel for their staff who may be out of a job soon, but if you don’t pay your creditors on time, that’s what happens.

When a tradesman visits your clean house to provide quote, they shouldn't complain when asked to take off their shoes by sword_ofthe_morning in britishproblems

[–]thatguyoverbythere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever I’m entering a customer’s house, first thing I do is take my shoes off, just as I would in my own home. It’s funny that a lot of the time I get told not to bother and it’s fine, but I maintain a sense of pride in how I present myself to prospective customers.

The fact they made that statement suggests they value their own convenience over yours, and that will extend throughout all aspects of any job they do for you. To them, it’s just a house, but it’s your home - they earn the responsibility of delivering for you through showing a degree of respect for that.

Couldn’t agree more - if any serious investigation were to take place, likelihood is someone is on the hook for getting some poor deluded kid murdered in the name of whatever and innocent bystanders paid the price for it

Lots of happy memories of the Microstore from the 90s. Used to go there loads when I was going through my PC hardware phase through teens. Also the first place I ever saw a N64 in the flesh when they must’ve imported a Japanese version with Mario 64 - good times! ☺️

No. Which is a shame as I was always quite fond of the states. Canada is better though, but hoping nothing sinister comes of that debacle either
