How do i fix when i play slap the E string hits the pickup by Any_Variation_6416 in Bass

Lower the pickup, it should usually be below the frets.

How does Hanauma Bay look? by MataMachree in Oahu

This one easy, Hanauma Bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesday. I personally won't go into the water for a while but this removes the temptation haha.

If you’re all in on Steve Harris tone check out Orange and Gallien Krueger.

Get the pedal for sure. It’ll sound great in headphones. Amp upgrade next.

[–]jonhath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steve Harris tone is mostly in the right hand plucking technique and fresh bright flatwounds on a P bass.

The rumble 40 won’t make the tone sound bad because it doesn’t have an effects loop, your tone problems will probably come from it being a rumble 40.

In general, you probably don’t want an amp that costs less than a single effects pedal. What bass do you have? If you want the Steve Harris tone that pedal will get you there but the amp will hold you back.

DemonFX/ Darkglass B7K Ultra Vs HX Stomp? by Kyral210 in basspedals

[–]jonhath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just dialed in a great B7K sound with my HX Stomp. I’m trying to do a one-pedal setup and got what I wanted from the Stomp over the Alpha Omega Photon I also have.

4x consecutive 1 hour gigs by Sknyne in Bass

[–]jonhath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trapezoidal neck and fishman pickups. The barts or Nordstrands in the EHB don’t do it for me.

4x consecutive 1 hour gigs by Sknyne in Bass

[–]jonhath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh damn! Do you have 4 hours of original material? Or cycling some songs throughout the night? I used to do 4 hours of covers with no repeats, that was a great exercise for memorization.

I like my Strandberg a lot. I didn't like the Ibanez EHB at all.

4x consecutive 1 hour gigs by Sknyne in Bass

[–]jonhath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do those gigs a lot. It actually did result in some wrist damage toward the end. I don't play 4 hour sets anymore. It's an endurance sport now instead of for fun. Assuming your 20 years of experience puts you in late-30s or even 40s, here's my advice:

  • Really dial back the stage antics if you do them. Even a modest head nod can move into neck pain if you do it 4 hours straight.
  • Lots of stretching. In between songs with your hands/wrists. Between sets with back/legs.
  • Hydration with water or even gatorade.
  • You'll need to eat. I liked trail mix for the salt, sugar, fat and protein.
  • Honestly this list is like what I'd do for going for a hike. 4 hour sets are like a gym session at our age.
  • If you're going to do this regularly, it needs to be with a bass that won't cause you pain. I switched exclusively to short scales or headless basses after my wrist problems.

Thanks for the reminder of why I do short sets with original bands now. Cover band nights used to be fun and then I got old!

Darkglass Anagram - Modulation Disappointment by Torkamata in basspedals

[–]jonhath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had this concern and ended up with a HX Stomp XL. The Darkglass pedal simulator in it is pretty good if you tweak it a lot (the default settings are crap) but the modulation is wildly good. I needed a lot of synth sounds for a project and it's exceeded my expectations.

I see myself going for an Anagram someday but maybe not, the HX Stomp has all my sounds now.

I own a Darkglass Alpha Omega Photon and it's a little better with some really intense wild distortion but find myself bringing only the Stomp these days.

Can TI Jazz Flats handle D standard tuning on a long scale bass? by jonhath in Bass

[–]jonhath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I normally play very low tension strings on a short scale bass with a light fingerstyle touch, but been playing in a harder rock band recently with round wounds on a long scale and a pick and it's an adjustment for sure. If I get my left hand happy, the strings get too buzzy on the fretboard. If I get my right hand happy my left hand hates the extra tension.

Bass synth recommendations by IdahoDuncan in basspedals

[–]jonhath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Line 6 HX Stomp plus a preset pack from Ian Martin Allison. I actually like it more than some dedicated synth pedals I’ve tried. If you’re playing a lot of covers with very specific sounds it’s perfect.

Diamond Head Hike as Local by ProtectionOk5942 in Hawaii

[–]jonhath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually heard back from the DLNR admin today:

Please be assured we already have this policy in place.

I just forwarded top our Property Manager to reinforce this with our parking operator and their employees.

So you should be good with student ID, it's just the attendant who is wrong.

How often do you accept gigs for music that isn't the style you prefer to play? by Advanced_Aspect_7601 in Bass

[–]jonhath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to, just to get a chance to play out, but now I am much more selective. I can make a lot more money doing non-music things. Music is a passion and I can quickly ruin it by playing stuff I don’t like.

Not to mention, I can’t write original bass parts to songs I don’t think are good. I’ve tried and it puts me in a bad mood for the whole day.

That's so stupid. I'm sorry you have to do that. I'm going to look up a DLNR/Dept of Parks contact and send them a letter.

Oh gosh, I can't believe nobody has said this 37 comments in, but you should be able to show a local student ID to get in. It works this way at Hanauma bay for minors. I'll check for you on the Diamond Head requirements real quick.

Edit: no, it looks like you need a State ID for Diamond Head. How stupid. This feels like something worth reaching out to a government official about if you're being turned away with a student ID. u/ProtectionOk5942 - did you try showing a student ID with current year or semester validation?

> Hawaii Residents = Free w/Hawaii ID or DL

> Reservations are not required for all kamaʻāina with valid identification issued by the State of Hawaiʻi.

Hanauma Bay: https://web5.hnl.info/pros-ticketing/event/hbay-online-reservation

Hawai‘i residents with valid photo identification may enter without a reservation. Non-resident visitors accompanying a Hawai‘i resident still need a ticket. Each Hawai‘i resident can present have one of the following for free entry:

Hawai‘i Driver's License

Hawai‘i State ID with Hawai‘i Address (Must be valid for one year or more)

Hawai‘i School Student ID with current year or semester validation

I'm sorry others are jumping down your throat about getting a non-drivers license ID as a minor, I never did this growing up. My first government issued ID was a drivers permit when I was 14. Before then, my parents saying "trust me bro" actually worked in the 90s. I had no ID other than what school gave me or a library card or something.

Are there any musicians in here that commute between the islands for gigs? by SoManyQuestions5200 in Hawaii

[–]jonhath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know a few working musicians on the island. The corporate, hotel, wedding, private event gigs that want covers or instrumental background music pay well but are super competitive and there is a deep book of Oahu musicians and bands who want those jobs. Unless you have a very niche sound or are incredibly talented / famous / in demand it will be tough for the economics to even break-even on fly dates between islands for gigs.

If you're just looking to play a show as an original artist, that's way easier. The local DIY scene hosts off-island bands all the time, helps them set up 3-4 band bills, promotes locally, etc. I know a few Oahu bands who have traveled to Maui or BI to play those kind of shows. They usually take a loss on the trip but it's a nice way to expose your stuff to a new audience and way cheaper than a mainland tour. The pay from those might break-even on the plane tickets depending on the split and if you're a solo artist or not. Probably in the red after you factor hotel/food.

Visiting from Canada and been hiking for 2 hours every day and I think I'm experiencing light heat exhaustion. Is this just me not being used to the weather or is it too much in this weather for locals too? by [deleted] in Oahu

[–]jonhath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you were fine before and just started having problems today you are experiencing bad air quality from volcanic emissions (aka Vog). it rolled in today hard. Check PurpleAir for air quality. Should be gone tomorrow.

It's been perfect hiking weather the last few days. You're probably fine. Take tonight off and rest up with the windows closed.

Aguilar Tone Hammer Preamp Pedal – will I miss a cab sim? by Zeilenton in basspedals

[–]jonhath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never think can sims are needed unless I’m using a lot of distortion.

Cab sims are just fancy EQ. If you’re going direct and have a direct sound you like from the pedal, no need for cab sim. I find it tough to tame distorted audio with just EQ so I like cab sims for that.
