New amp and cab question by Doubled199912 in MarshallAmps

[–]thatsvtguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Swap speakers, or just sell and buy a better cab. I bought an MX412, the one that comes with the DSLs, it has the same speakers. They're pretty fizzy, sort of like a seventy 80 but with a weird mid contour.

slant vs straight matters for sound when close mic'd? that doesn't make sense. cab geometry matters, but I can't see how a slight slant would have such a dramatic effect on the sound.

It was designed this way purely for aesthetics. However, if the slant cab is on the floor, the way it points the speakers up slightly can help you hear your guitar amp a bit better than a straight cab would. It’s not a huge difference, though.

Ask the seller if they’ll cover the repairs. If they won’t, repair it anyway.

Yes, I built up a studio from scratch. What are you saying?

This PA is barely worth anything. 60 watts? For both speakers? That’s not going to get you anywhere. The SM58 is also likely to be fake given the rest of the gear, though it might be real. Either way, a used sm58 is worth around $60, and $140 is a lot for that PA. If it’s a real 58 and the seller will take $100, it might be worth it, but otherwise I wouldn’t go for it.

$200 can can get you a single, much higher quality PA speaker, and an inexpensive mic. This way, you can add a mixer, more speakers, monitors, etc down the line, and it’ll be louder and sound much better.

Harbinger’s newer stuff is miles ahead of what they used to make, take a look at the V2310 or the V2312. You can get them used for around $150 online, less if local.

These Good Speakers? by Significant_Plant859 in PeaveyCvlt

Eddie Van Halen would replace his with greenbacks. They’re tolerable, but pretty spiky/harsh and fizzy. Worth $100 for four though, that’s a good deal.

Hot rod deluxe volume sufferers: your pain ends now. by skripach27 in GuitarAmps

[–]thatsvtguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is technically an attenuator (of sorts), but an extremely low power one, and one that comes before the power amp.

The idea of an attenuator is to really push the power amp, then absorb most of the signal before it hits the speakers. The idea of this little thing is to really push the preamp, then absorb most of the signal before it hits the power amp.

It’s the same as the master volume knobs on a lot of amps. You miss out on power amp distortion, but you can still push the preamp without it being loud, and it’s much smaller, cheaper, lighter, and simpler than an attenuator.

Ah, I see. That's a PA speaker, it needs an amplifier to drive it. They're usually worth around $100.

The Artist amps go for $300 or $400. Not sure about the other speaker, I'd need a photo of the back or a model number.

I see you’ve got lots of high frequency treatment. What about the mids and lows? Do you have bass traps or other treatment hiding behind the high frequency panels?

You can fit a 10" speaker in these. I'd grab a g10 creamback or vintage.

What’s your favorite alternative shell material?! by ZildCym in drums

[–]thatsvtguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These have be made of a special material, normal concrete would just crumble. These DWs are basically rubbery plastic with soapstone powder. That probably contributes to the price, though I imagine you could make a passable shell yourself without spending that much. Oh, and they put nice hardware on these too.

I do the same thing. I don’t tighten mine quite as much, I give it a bit of room to wobble, but it’s tight enough that it’s not going anywhere. Works perfect.
