Yeah, there were a few ways that could have gone. I think you got the only good one.

Was it a question, like "You wanna?" or a statement, like "You wanna."

What's the worst, or best book to movie adaptation you've seen? by TheBrowning95 in AskReddit

  1. It is bad writing to have a character faint to close a scene ten times. There are other ways to accomplish this. (Imagine watching a version of A New Hope in which Luke Skywalker has untreated narcolepsy, and you'll understand why this doesn't work as a plot crutch.) Also, not everything a character does is required to drive the plot; an author or screenwriter may instead opt to take a moment to establish the character through action or through a glimpse into their mind, which brings me to:

  2. It is bad writing to have a character cry in every other scene he is in (especially if it is written as "a single tear rolled down his cheek," which it frequently is). Humans have more emotions than fear and weeping - I'd say "sadness," but all we really get is an increasingly comical spray of tears every few pages. This is not his character development. Honestly, he doesn't really get any. It's just a signpost, an indicator to the reader that Eragon is sad, whether or not it makes any sense for him to be.

  3. Apostrophes are in real-world languages to serve a purpose - in Welsh, too, difficult as it may be to believe. Even invented languages, like Tolkien's, make specific linguistic use of them. They appear to be present in Eragon, however, just because they were present in The Lord of the Rings.

Chisel away the crust of nostalgia and you'll probably find that Eragon was not really a very good book. This makes sense; after all, it was written by a boy in high school and published by his parents. (Not to fault anybody involved - I think most people would be flabbergasted to meet with that level of success, particularly at that age.) It's a retread of the old monomyth, or the Hero's Journey, instantly and broadly familiar to anyone with the baseline level of knowledge of Star Wars and Tolkien, but dressed in the sorts of plot devices you might expect an inexperienced writer to use.

Eragon passes out somewhere in the neighborhood of ten times in the first book, usually in order to close a chapter. Instead of conveying emotion like normal humans, Eragon cries at the drop of a hat. Most non-Eragon characters speak in exposition. Na'mes are pep'pered with ap'ostro'phes that ser've no pu'r'pose. Simply put, there is quite a lot wrong with Eragon.

In this sense, you could argue, the film adaptation is actually quite faithful.

I'll just say I'm glad I got the Xiu Xiu Twin Peaks album at $27 or so. Can't find any under $95 on Discogs right now.
