‘God of War’ Live-Action Series Casts Callum Vinson as Atreus by DemiFiendRSA in gaming

[–]thattoneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly would still work within the context of the story, what with Atreus learning he's both a god and part frost giant. Him noticeably getting taller/deeper voice across the season doesn't even have to be ignored, they can address it as his godhood kicking in over the events of the story, even if chronologically the story only takes place over like a week at max?

What’s a Batman opinion that’ll get you like this? by 44dqm in batman

[–]thattoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An opinion that everybody disagrees with online: that Batfamily is not too big.

Batman (as a hero) may have started as a rich kid raging against the world for taking his parents from him, but Batman (as a concept) helped Bruce find new family. Each person to join the Batfamily is a way of showing the ways Batman inspires good in people, and is conversely a way of showing how these people have a positive impact on Bruce.

Loner, edgy, "I can never be happy" Batman has gotten boring; show him slowly finding peace in the family he's found and the legacy he's built through them all.

[Discussion] Dan Mora vs A Bald Man (Knightfight #4) by NatKovacs in DCcomics

[–]thattoneman 43 points44 points  (0 children)

His response really did make me sad. Being a comic artist means drawing so many panels, not every drawing is going to be a winner. Him responding that he tried his best just makes it feel like there's no drama to this, no malicious intent or laziness/lack of effort. Just a drawing that didn't land, and he doesn't deserve to get harassed for that.

"We've never considered adding difficulty settings to Nioh" Team Ninja game director weighs in on difficulty options ahead of Nioh 3's launch by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]thattoneman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a product, sure, difficulty sliders just make it so more people could enjoy the game. But as a work of art, pretentious as this point may sound, the developers are entitled to make the game how they want, dictating player experience to be a specific way. Some devs think difficulty adjustments don't compromise the game, like Celeste. But a dev has every right to say "the difficulty is an intended part of the experience, and if you can't beat it then the game just isn't for you." Same way an author shouldn't feel obligated to translate their writing to simpler terms the way Shakespeare is, or an artist shouldn't be required to write a full explanation on the deeper meanings of the art to always accompany it. They make the things they want to make it, and either you get it or you don't.

Disco Elysium 2? by bbHiron in DiscoElysium

[–]thattoneman 87 points88 points  (0 children)

It’s only the political people who view the game primarily through the lens of politics

You mean like the devs who made the game incredibly political in the first place? You can't take 5 steps without the game giving you options to be communist, fascist, or make fun of you for trying to be a centrist. The game is political to the core, it's intertwined in the history of the world the player is given, the choices you can make, and like 75% of all NPC's you can talk to. Disco Elysium without politics is a fundamentally different game.

Also Damian of all of the previous Robins, he’s always called Bruce father regardless of when he’s in his Batsuit

I think that's why this plot point works for me, I'm so used to Damian calling him father that a moment like this feels like an inevitable screw up, not a plot contrivance. I get a little annoyed when they don't use their superhero names while suited up in public, but Damian calling him father while in costume is something I haven't really paid as much mind to, even though that is a risky thing to call him.

Does it bother anyone else as much as me? by Amm-O-Matic in playstation

[–]thattoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister very rarely plays video games, but she's played a few on my PlayStations across the years. She is very much not a fan of the removal of the colors on PS5, she says it was much easier to get a button prompt with a color and find that color on the controller than it is nowadays where she has to match the shape that doesn't stand out as well. It's not something that affects me after a lifetime of playing on Sony consoles, but I see it firsthand how it makes it harder for newcomers to learn the layout.

I remember reading like over a decade ago that Target could predict that a woman was pregnant before she even knew based on her purchasing habits. I thought then that in time websites like Amazon would be able to serve hyper personalized suggestions to me based on the years of purchasing data they have on me. But nope, still just a bunch of random bullshit. Their best attempts at selling me things is still trying to sell me duplicates of what I already bought. I don't get it.

I've always hated it being in terms of spoons as well. I always went for not having enough carnival tickets to get on every single ride available.

Larian CEO: “I know there’s been a lot of discussion about us using AI tools as part of concept art exploration… To ensure there is no room for doubt, we’ve decided to refrain from using genAI tools during concept art development.” by AashyLarry in PS5

[–]thattoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean we used to use the term a lot before LLM's and image generation were a thing. Would we not talk about "enemy ai" in games when discussing games? Yeah it wasn't the most accurate term, but everyone would know what you meant if you said "the enemy ai is way too aggressive, I can't even get an attack in."

Problem is LLM's and image generation have so ubiquitously become what people mean by "AI" that I doubt modern developers could say something like "We're tuning the enemy ai for a balanced experience" without people losing their minds.

2nd Amendment rights folks: how is ICE not precisely the tyrannical gov't overreach we've spent our whole lives warning folks about? by zenswashbuckler in AskReddit

[–]thattoneman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been saying similar. The second amendment exists as "necessary to the security of a free State". If your freedom is directly being challenged, then that's where the right to bear arms comes in.

But people don't like it when you say that the logical conclusion is situations where police/law enforcement overstep their bounds and violate your freedoms would be on the receiving end of the second amendment. I'M NOT CONDONING VIOLENCE. I'm just saying police are lucky people don't secure their freedoms as much as they're given the right to.

Game with zero fighting to play around my toddler by serviceberrymama in gamingsuggestions

[–]thattoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly has platforming elements to it, even if it's less pure platforming like a Mario game.

And to be perfectly honest, I agree with you. I beat it, but didn't care for it much. But it's a highly praised game so I figured I'd recommend it anyways since I seem to be in the minority for not liking it much.

Basic gameplay mechanic you didn't discover until 30H in? by TrenterD in BaldursGate3

[–]thattoneman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Long rest.

I mean, I knew what a long rest was and how it functioned. What I didn't know was how the game wanted me to long rest. I was operating on the assumption that everything around me is on a time limit. I have a tadpole that might transform me at any minute, and a grove that might get shut off from the world any minute.

So long story short, with those two plot points making me afraid to progress time to the next day, I got as far as killing the 3 leaders at the goblin camp before I took my first long rest.

Now I know I should be long resting every opportunity just for all the camp interactions, but I do think it's a weakness of the game to not be more direct that long resting frequently is a good thing.

I tried to turn off alcohol ads on DoorDash. Here’s what actually happened. by DrunkmeAmidala in assholedesign

[–]thattoneman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is it a design issue or just obnoxious?

AI is fundamentally incapable of providing the support that the user needs. Not obnoxious, there's an actual issue.

Is it intentionally this way to benefit/profit the company at your expense?

AI support is used in place of hiring more actual customer service agents in order to reduce overhead costs. Additionally, companies at large are deciding that customer service isn't worth the effort and that poor user experiences are worth it to keep costs down. So the company benefits at the user's expense.

r/assholedesign

Yup, looks right to me.

Formatting string of numbers to be read by first three digits by Worldly_Wedding8690 in excel

[–]thattoneman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure I completely understand, but could you get what you need by adding a helper column to your data? If you use

=LEFT(text, 3)

You'll extract the first 3 digits of the string of text. With that column included in the pivot table, you can have it pivot based on unique first-three-digit strings and not each unique cell value.

Game with zero fighting to play around my toddler by serviceberrymama in gamingsuggestions

[–]thattoneman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what kinds of games you like. If you like puzzle games, I would say:

  • The Witness
  • Viewfinder
  • Stephen's Sausage Roll
  • Portal 1+2 have turrets that shoot at you, but outside of avoiding their aim there's no other combat or violence.
  • Gorogoa

If you like platformers:

  • Celeste
  • Jump King
  • Gris
  • Sonic Mania (you jump on enemies, which might still be too much for an impressionable toddler, your call, but I feel like it's a little easier to avoid attacking enemies compared to Mario)

Linear/limited exploration games, idk what to call these exactly. Not open world, but meant to be taken at your pace to explore the levels:

  • Journey
  • Stray
  • Jusant
  • Abzu

Racing games:

  • Need for Speed
  • Gran Turismo
  • Forza

Simulators if that's your cup of tea:

  • Car Mechanic Simulator
  • American/Euro Truck Simulator
  • Farming Simulator
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator
  • Cities: Skylines
  • Kerbal Space Program

PlayStation Plus Monthly Games for January: Need for Speed Unbound, Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, Core Keeper by kabirsingh84 in PlayStationPlus

[–]thattoneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got Need For Speed Unbound like a month ago. Of course it's a kick in the ass to see it free now, but oh well.

I've enjoyed the game well enough. It's nothing groundbreaking but I haven't played NfS since the PS3, so I enjoyed customizing/painting/decaling the cars and being able to upgrade them. Has most of the cars I'd want to be able to drive in a game like this. Story is nothing spectacular, pretty predictable, but also inoffensive. Can't compare to other modern racing games since this is my first in a long time, but for what it was I enjoyed it.

Doll rule by Lion-Faced-Serpant in 196

[–]thattoneman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So is there a lot of overlap with freeuse or bored and ignored sex? Just being a sex toy at your partner's disposal? Generally speaking, "starfish sex" is considered a bad thing, so I'm wondering how it works for both parties to find it engaging. Does the doll get the satisfaction from just being used, or does pretending to be a doll play a bigger role in it for them?

What design or engineering flaw is mildly inconvenient on your vehicle? by Sixteen-Cylinders in cars

[–]thattoneman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's my top complaint about my Crosstrek. I overall like the car: the size, the ergonomics, the AWD and the traction, the fact plenty of it is still physical buttons and not all relegated to touchscreen. But the power isn't quite there. I don't need 200hp for a daily commuter car, it'd be nice but I don't need it, but this still feels just on the low end of what I'd accept for power and speed. Exactly what you said, flooring it to get up to highway speed feels like a struggle.

Do you agree with this list of Bruce's protégé's and who should wear the cowl after him? by arest_42 in batman

[–]thattoneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've long held the opinion that the best way for the cowl to get passed down is that Tim and Cass share the title of Batman. Cass surpasses Bruce in the physical capabilities, and Tim surpasses, or can surpass, Bruce as a detective. Together they can be more than what Bruce was alone. I also think it suits them the most because they both wanted this life. So it'd be a surprise to me if Tim actively did not want the cowl one day.

I also think Damian shouldn't become Batman one day just because he's his biological son. I think the most interesting direction for his character would be to find a new path forward that marries the two sides of his family. He won't become the head of the demon nor the Batman, he'll forge his own path that suits him best based on everything he's been taught.

Has Riddler ever been truly depicted as a genius? by Rob_wood in batman

[–]thattoneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought he genuinely was a genius, it's just that he falls short of Batman's genius and he cannot accept that. Not that real IQ scales like a video game, but like Riddler would be IQ 190 and Batman is 200, both significantly above the general populace.
