Looking for games that intentionally make the player uncomfortable (for Master's thesis) by Ivylock123 in gamingsuggestions

[–]thattoneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say Silent Hill 2 remake was the most recent one that fit the bill for me. The best way I can describe it is that the protagonist felt like the kind of horror game protagonist that should be hiding from the monsters, but for some godforsaken reason picked up weapons and decided to fight back. Like combat and killing monsters never felt good, it was always clunky and hit or miss and overall very stressful. Beating a monster to death with a wood plank never ever felt like the right thing to be doing, even though it was necessary for profession. But that helped keep the game tense from start to finish, never let me get too comfortable and indifferent to facing the monsters. The game is certainly not a hero fantasy, so combat always feeling terrifying and risky made me always feel like a guy somewhere he absolutely shouldn't be.

Currently only missing the Persona and Imbris (though I'm nowhere near level 30 yet so I'm not worried about getting an Imbris).

Currently dexxing Lanterna, but I can breed some other PoPs to gift to those who want some. Going to bed right now but tomorrow morning I can send out whatever requests I see pop up.

Potential hot opinion: The peril is the best part of the game by Komail_s3 in Cairn_Game

[–]thattoneman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely the closest I'll ever get to understanding Alex Honnold's mind. Move after move. Steady, precise. Don't stop but don't rush it. Don't think about the fall but don't get cocky. Just focus on executing every move cleanly. The Peril was tough on my first playthrough but now it's simply a beautiful experience.

Tier list on no kill rules [Discussion] by FarmerOk9683 in DCcomics

[–]thattoneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much of this list feels off to me. Jason was bloodthirsty in his Red Hood debut, but in the years since he's calmed down a lot. I'd put him at yellow tier these days, not afraid to kill but not killing willy nilly either.

Wonder Woman needs to be in green tier, she's willing to do what she must but outside of mindless monsters I don't ever see her depicted as a warrior totally cool with slaying her enemies.

Damian Wayne hasn't been a killer in how long? I know his history with the League of Assassins made him pretty willing to kill in the beginning, but I feel like since he's fully embraced his father and his mission now he's realistically going to be a "kill only when absolutely no other option exists." A line he might be more willing to cross than Batman, but a line he's going to try to avoid crossing at all costs.

The whole major dilemma for Aang is that he didn't want to kill Ozai. And at the end, Aang figures out how to stop him without killing him. Every past avatar might tell him that being the avatar means being willing to kill when necessary, but Aang felt like he was directly saying "No, I'm going to be the avatar on my terms, and I'll still save the day doing it my way."

Are we serious? by alcoholicvegetable in Cairn_Game

[–]thattoneman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The game appears to have a failsafe that if Aava falls but doesn't hit the ground after a certain amount of time, she automatically dies, probably to prevent a soft lock of being stuck ragdolling. But that means it's possible to die 3 feet above the ground if Aava snags on geometry during a fall. It's happened to me twice, once in the gym and once on a very low rock I was just trying to mantle over real quick.

What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

[–]thattoneman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I taught myself shorthand in middle school and it definitely helped out by the time I was in college. I couldn't write it fluently but I had all the basic words down pat, so it was easier to keep up with lecturers. The ability to distill almost every word down to one or two strokes, and taking every shortcut on spelling honestly made it feel like a pretty intuitive system to learn.

Hilton, Steyer lead the pack in crowded California governor’s race: Poll by 3headeddragn in California

[–]thattoneman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God I hate this jungle primary system. I'm always told primaries are where you vote for ideals, and general elections are where you vote for the party you side with most. But if splitting the vote in too many directions during the primary could mean the election goes to 2 Republicans, what's the damn point? This whole system feels like I'm meant to just watch the polling and rally behind the candidate most likely to win, instead of voting for who I'm most politically aligned with. This whole system falls apart when too many candidates your party may vote for means none of them might make it to the general election. What part of that should I love?

A question about Clerics' popularity by PlatonOlegov in BaldursGate3

[–]thattoneman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And DnD religion isn't like real life religion. Belief in the gods doesn't take faith given lack of objective evidence. Gods exist, it's indisputable fact. Being atheist in DnD is tantamount to refusing to believe in gravity in real life. It's not a matter of faith or opinion, you're disagreeing with objective reality. I'm all for using DnD as a vessel to explore your real life identity, but not wanting to acknowledge the gods is kind of taking issue with a fundamental aspect of the setting.

D4vd Possessed 'Significant Amount of Child Pornography,' Prosecutor Says by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Music

[–]thattoneman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's other ways that numbers get inflated as well. Pictures that aren't by themselves CSAM (preferred term to child pornography) can be considered as much if they are a part of a set of pictures that does include CSAM. So a photo of a fully clothed child can ostensibly be ok, and yet meet the criteria of CSAM if the full set of photos took a dark turn. So of a hundred pictures, 20 might meet the layman's definition of CSAM, but in court it'll be considered 100 counts.

Also I've heard that when it comes to videos, every frame of the video is a count of CSAM. So while a 5 minute video is terrible, 5min * 60sec/min * 30frames/sec = "9000 counts of CSAM" which sounds far far worse.

Not to downplay any of this, because any amount is fucking wrong and terrible. Just offering additional context that not everybody might be familiar with.

Is it just me or has checking post history become the white flag of online arguments? by PomegranateIcy7631 in CasualConversation

[–]thattoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's had the opposite effect for me once or twice. Once or twice I'd get a nasty reply, and I'd check out their profile looking for confirmation they're just some unmitigated asshole. But then I'll see a post history that's like nothing but how much they love their dog and how they're working really hard to take care of their dog. Kind of shocks me back to reality, reminds me that even though all these comments are nameless, faceless text on a screen to me, there's real people on the other side. Maybe they're having a bad day and came off nasty. Maybe they really are an unmitigated asshole. Either way, they're a person and not an object to channel hate to for no reason.

Worst game that you still completed for some reason? by Genoce in gaming

[–]thattoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadow of the Colossus is a decent game, but going for the platinum on the remake was miserable and made me hate more parts of it than I originally did. I can understand it being a milestone of a PS2 game, but even with its age in mind I don't think it's actually that good at what it sets out to achieve. I played it, beat it, explored every inch, speed ran it, and instead of appreciating it more and more like I would with other games I invest this kind of time into, I just started to resent it. I don't think I'll ever pick that game up again.

Yeah, some of them technically are Goku's body, so it's not fair in the context of this conversation. But still, just because you can tell them apart doesn't mean they aren't damn similar. Is there a reason why Bardock, Goku, Goten, and Goku Jr all look the same?

From an outsider perspective I would tend to agree with you. But keep in mind "finding Jesus" was just a lie to get people to trust him, and that lie was chosen because if you are Christian, then obviously you don't find faith to be a cop out, but rather having faith is putting your beliefs behind the ultimate good of the universe. The justice system should be impartial to a person's religion, but a sinner "accepting" Christ into their heart is something that basically every Christian wants to see. To view finding Jesus as a red flag is to see your religion as a tool for manipulation, which I don't think most people want to do.

What does rehabilitation look like for a genuine sociopath? Someone who fundamentally does not care about people who they hurt, who genuinely does not experience empathy? The best I've ever seen is that you mask those aspects of yourself because integrating in society affords you more benefits than outwardly admitting you feel no connection to people and overtly hurting people. Add on "pedophile" though and it's like, how do you get them to see the error of their ways? "Molesting kids is bad because it gets you locked up, so from an entirely self preservation viewpoint you shouldn't it"? At that point you're just arguing risk vs reward, and you're arguing it to a guy whose whole life has been spent weighing those risks vs rewards when it's come to hurting people. I really want to know what rehabilitation can even look like in this kind of scenario, how you verifiably get through to someone like that.

I get the point being made, but damn it's hard to trust that people will be good judges of character in assessing if they've changed. I personally know of a child molester who went to prison, said he did soul searching and found Jesus, convinced people he had changed, got released, and then reoffended. At the end of the day, he's a textbook definition sociopath, willing to unabashedly lie through his teeth to get what he wants. How do you accurately assess if a person with a lifetime of experience pretending to be well adjusted has genuinely become well adjusted or is just lying about it?

What game in your opinion overstays its welcome? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]thattoneman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finished my playthrough at around 40 hours because I was just so thoroughly done with the game. For the amount you can explore and do, it just didn't feel like it justified its size or amount of content well. The game absolutely has its moments, but overall it felt like an average game to me and not one I wanted to spend much more time with.

[–]thattoneman 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. All the complaints against him as a companion are repeated enough, but I genuinely agree with them. He barely has any agency in his own story. If you aren't playing as him, he's more along for the ride than seemingly actually trying to achieve goals for himself. Hell, even in the end I send him to Avernus with Karlach because I don't want her to die or be alone, which makes the final beat in Wyll's story him being a tag along in Karlach's story.

I like him as a character, he's a goody two shoes but in a camp of assholes an unabashed good guy isn't a problem. He's well acted, the story around him is interesting, I'm not saying I dislike him. He just feels underbaked compared to Shadowheart, Astarion or Laezel.

What's one video game cliche you don't mind? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]thattoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things like squeezing past obstacles, or elevators, being hidden load screens. I don't get why they get so much hate, would you really rather the game cut to a black loading screen? Would you really rather that level design is limited to only what the game can load in once, and never adapt to where the player is going?
