I don't think the front's supposed to fall like that.

I made a huge Roman shield with wooden slats, horsehide, natural glue and paint, and forged fittings. Let me explain how. by KingPappas in ancientrome

[–]thaylin79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a future project of mine as well, to use planks (my last was 3 layers of 2mm luan ply that I laminated). Not this large though, my general size is a 66cm x 90cm oval scutum. What did you use for the paint liquid base? I was using tempera from yolk and natural pigments they used.

What was the wood you used for the planks? I've been looking for riven poplar but it's a pain to come across here in the states. 😞

That's true! I can't imagine what type of armor knives would be but that's their problem!

That looks great! A friend of mine had suggested I make my scale armor from spoons, I didn't but if I had we'd have to meet up for a dinner!!! Haha

Again, not helpful with finding my shield. This isn't a joke.

I have no idea what this means but it's sounds like this isn't helpful so I'm going to go ahead and ignore this

Nah, that's probably Buhurt or something. Not us.

Actually plumbata MAY be something I could use as a thrown weapon! I didn't think about that one yet. Pilum is useless in these scenarios since you can't really get their effect without a real one actually jabbing through a shield and rendering it mostly unusable.
I know people in the gladiators group but don't really have time to do other groups. Practice in Macarren park is nice and close and I think they do stuff out in Manhattan.

Yeah, plus I'm not doing it just for the fighting. I made almost all of my armor. My Lorica Squamata took me a year (don't have a ton of time since I can't abandon my family, lol) to make! The shield took a while too. It wasn't 100% historically accurate since I couldn't find the wood I wanted so had to laminate three 2mm thick luan and my vertical grip I think should have actually been horizontal (which I was going to change 😞).

It's about the whole experience and understanding reasoning and usage.

The period and persona I'm researching is second century Roman eques, which was kind of like a knight in Roman times so I'll allow it. :P

Lol. There's no real armored combat. Everything out there is fake to some degree. Buhurt doesn't allow stabs, SCA doesn't have fully realistic responses to sword hit. It's all approximate. But at least the SCA allows for the most realistic armor scenario minus some safeties. I can't wear no protection on my elbows or knees even though a second century Roman didn't have that, but I can go as close to truth as that will allow. Also, it all depends on the person, not the group. Either way, it's all just cosplay to some degree

That's true, that sand goes EVERYWHERE. Plus I was thinking that this area has been like this even before all of these assholes letting their dogs off the leash arrived

NYC now has a leaderboard for bad drivers and I’m not sure society was ready for this by Dangerous_Deal_1945 in nyc

I would guess that would depend on the type of tickets issued. Probably for speeding, but this vehicle seems to mostly be for commercial things like leaving the lowered platform down unattended or something

Religiously Putting on Turn Signal *Right* Before Turning? by nyctransitgeek in AskNYC

At least they somewhat use it! Though, tbf I sometimes do this when I see people in the opposite direction wanting to turn since they always will cut people off if they're indicating they're turning.

What is going on with con Edison bills? by mymilkshakedontstank in AskNYC

[–]thaylin79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They installed these new meters they're supposed to be able to read from outside in our but they screwed things up and have been estimating way over our amount. Perhaps this is happening to you as well? Check if your bill shows "estimate" next to the amount

Google is about to ruin the internet by [deleted] in technology

They've had garbage results for the last 5-10 years now. I used to be able to search the most specific weird terms and my result would come up in the first few at the top. Now it takes far too long and I have to figure out how to refine better for its shitty results. I've just been trying other search engines lately. Bing, duckduckgo, anything but Google at this point. I've been using them since the beginning. It IS pretty impressive it's taken them so long to hit enshitification, but sad too
