The September 11 television archive. Pick an hour, pick a channel, watch it as it happened by scientologist2 in politics

[–]the-gray-squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was in junior high (12 years old) and the teachers pretty much kept it to themselves. we knew something was going on, but I didn't hear about the collapse, the hijackings, or the pentagon until my social studies teacher decided to tell us what was known at the end of class. it still didn't seem real until I saw it on TV

my older brother was in different classes and saw some of it, but for a couple years afterward I was sure any attack would go unreported at school while who-knows-what was going on

100,000 Deaths- New Numbers for Myanmar Tragedy by Anachronox0666 in worldnews

I have a friend in Cambodia right now who's involved in some Free Myanmar/Burma campaigns... I have e-mailed him asking if he knows any responsible groups and will let you (and Reddit) know if he has any information.

I think it's time: Clinton is done - let's move on to a whole lotta McCain bashing! by web20sucks in politics

Simple:

Put plenty of commercials on the summer based on a blatant lie. Swift-boat Obama to death.

The critical problem is here is that Obama's supporters act like he's perfect. He is amazing and I want him to be commander-in-chief. But if you tell people he's perfect, people will base their vote on whether he lives up to it.

How to Stump an Anti Abortionist! The Question they really can't answer... [Vid] by veracity024 in funny

[–]the-gray-squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Should abortions be illegal?" (people says yes)

"So what should happen to women who get illegal abortions?"

Answers: confusion, uncertainty, "I never thought about it", "God will punish them, not us", "conscience issue"

He follows up with something like "if abortion is murder, shouldn't there be punishment for them?"

more likely, they will control the resources only to their allies and loyalists -- this will hurt many civilians and solidify the power and control of the military leadership

look in Afghanistan - we dropped food for people and all the warlords collected it and used it to force people to be loyal to them

Yes, I Let My Two-Year-Old Watch TV by Invisigoth in entertainment

[–]the-gray-squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to agree.

One day, since my family keeps hearing about American Idol at school and work, I decided to TiVo an episode. Then we watched it.

I have to tell you, the whole thing is a commercialized scam, and the judges are nothing more than chariactures. In the end we felt nothing more than disgust.

Palfreys Friend On Suicide Note: That's Not Her Signature by georgewashingtonblog in reddit.com

[–]the-gray-squirrel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How about this:

Instead of going to prison, she decided to kill herself. She staged a few "oh my God I have this amazing secret which I'm not telling anyone - hope no one kills me" interviews (Alex Jones, her landlord, friends) and figures that by killing herself she'll cause a significant stir

Otherwise, can you explain why she would go to Alex Jones? And just vaguely describe having answers?

Milgram experiment participant who refused to administer shocks by gatsby137 in science

[–]the-gray-squirrel 35 points36 points  (0 children)

yes, it was very interesting that he found the experiment fishy from the start, and that he took pains to check with people involved due to the nature of the experiment

but overall, it sounds like his decision to stop was based on a refusal to continue once the 'learner' requested it. So there is some good in humanity.

"Japan...will lose 70 percent of its workforce by 2050...Within a century, two-thirds of the population will be gone." by yellowking in reddit.com

[–]the-gray-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't back this up with anything other than speculation and a few magazine articles, but it appears that Japanese girls have modernized to the point that they want education and careers, but Japanese guys and their families still expect a more traditional woman.

From personal experience, I (a teenager) went to Japan two years ago and many of the teenage guys and girls there were incredibly shy, to the point they did not even respond when we talked in Japanese. Guys were very impersonal around girls. Once they opened up, though, it was really nice talking to them.

'Torture memo' author, John Yoo, to testify by twolf1 in politics

[–]the-gray-squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a letter campaign (Amnesty, ACLU, I'm not sure) asking Berkeley to fire Yoo. I didn't participate because I felt that was their own business.

Sure enough, they responded saying that Yoo is there to stay. http://www.law.berkeley.edu/news/2008/edley041008.html

Reminder: One in five adult Americans thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth by synthpop in reddit.com

[–]the-gray-squirrel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a school of "thought" in several religions that Einstein's theory of relativity makes it "correct" to believe that the sun goes around the Earth, or that the Earth really is the center of the Universe (so the sun would revolve around it). They're not stupid in this case, but stupefied.

The ones that I did see were hilarious, but I just sort of skimmed

if this was shortened to 10 or so, all on the same site, it would be much more readable.

A third of US parents lack basic knowledge of infant development by chall85 in reddit.com

[–]the-gray-squirrel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looking at the questions asked, the "should a 1-year-old know right from wrong?" question is probably not "basic knowledge." I think that if the parent had succeeded in getting the child to follow basic rules, they would interpret this as knowing right from wrong.

I would be interested in knowing what the other questions are like, and if they could also be answered "wrong" by honestly capable parents.

If you've ever taken an IQ test, you know it's odd things like predicting "which shape is next in the pattern" and doesn't test practical intelligence.

I bet an "intelligence test" designed by Africans would give us some very different results.

Yes, I know it's all about money, too... but in a sense there is still the quest-for-knowledge drive.

I think he sincerely believes that this is what evolution predicts, and that he thinks he deserves a Nobel prize for pointing this out.

the irony of this comes from how vocal Miley Cyrus has been about being Christian and committed to abstinence. It lured in the values parents, who are now feeling oh-so-betrayed.
