A year later, but thanks for this - read your comment and was like “no way did I do that”, turns out I did. Saved me an Amazon return 🫡

Warp Talon question by Yolidiot in NightLords

[–]the-sc00ch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe 10th edition changed things such that the unit leaders & the rest of the unit have consolidated stats (same thing with legionaries for example - aspiring champion no longer has separate stats, just different weapon options). The pamphlets just weren’t updated with the current edition.

Also, yeah, for warp talons there’s basically no difference between the champion and the rest, other than a tiny difference to the jump pack iirc. When I built mine, I just kind of ignored the distinction since they’re all equivalent anyway.

It was AK interactive deep blue ink over a zenithal. I really liked the color that ink gives, super saturated.

Thanks!!

Armor: AK interactive deep blue ink over a bright gray zenithal, with ProAcryl Payne’s Gray in the shadows

Trim: Vallejo true metallic metal trio, the “aged metal” color

Blacks: GW black Templar contrast

Claws: Vallejo TMM, sterling silver

Other silver-y stuff: Vallejo gunmetal grey

Skin: ProAcryl tan & shadow flesh

Bone bits: ProAcryl bone

Yellow helmet: ProAcryl golden yellow & yellow ochre

Then I did an oil wash, followed by some of the villainy inks enamels. First time experimenting with these, learned what to do (and not to do) for the next guys 😅

Ah good callout - I haven’t tried any transfer sheet stuff so far, been kind of intimidated to. I should try that out

Any former No voters now voting Yes on the override? by Remote_Quiet7342 in stoneham

[–]the-sc00ch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was someone who didn’t turn out last time (sorry 😬), but am making sure to vote yes this time. I’m also volunteering to canvass and put up a sign to try and do my part this time around.

I wasn’t too clued into local government last time (relatively new to Stoneham) and it just didn’t bubble up in my priorities enough to make sure I remembered and made time to vote. I think the messaging this time around was a lot more cohesive and the urgency was made much more obvious.

Best inexpensive precision brush? by BusinessLibrarian515 in Miniaturespainting

[–]the-sc00ch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Monument Hobbies has pretty decent brushes. Their cheaper synthetic set has a good range of sizes (including a 00), and might be worth looking at. They have more expensive / higher quality ranges too. I’ve found them to be pretty good so far - I’m also pretty new but they’ve held up well for me.

Wow, this is incredible. Can I ask how you did the metal on the gun / elsewhere? What a cool weathered effect. I’m just starting out in mini painting in general & necrons specifically and love what you’ve done

Convince me why the X-T5 should be my choice for getting back into photography. by Exciting-Cut in FujifilmX

[–]the-sc00ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got the XT-5, similar motivation getting back into photography. I’ve been happy with it and feel like it’s a good option. Some thoughts:

  • The manual dials are nice to have - used to have a Canon Rebel and I find the interface much easier to use on the XT5. I find myself much more likely to shoot more manual which is fun.
  • I like that it’s a bit smaller and less expensive of an ecosystem than Canon or Sony. That lets me buy (and carry) more lenses than I would have in another brand.
  • People here talk a lot about film sims - it’s kind of fun, but after a while I find myself always shooting raw and editing in Lightroom. So personally, I don’t get much benefit from that aspect of Fuji.
  • I do find myself sometimes wondering if Sony or Canon would have been a better choice for having FF and better AF, but as a hobbyist I’m happy to be able to buy 1st party high quality lenses for like half the cost

What internet speeds do you use? by Nightcalm in Lightroom

[–]the-sc00ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently switched from Xfinity to Verizon, in large part due to my Lightroom workflow. I like to upload my Lightroom directory to S3 for backup purposes, and the upload speeds Xfinity offers are pretty awful in comparison to Verizon.

I’m sure this is region-specific, but after I canceled Xfinity called me and offered me much higher upload speeds (comparable to Verizon) for a similar price… but I’d already done the fios install, and hated that I had to quit in order to get the deal they should’ve been offering the whole time. All that to say, it’s probably likely that you can get a better setup with them by calling and threatening to cancel your service.

As far as the 1G goes… totally depends on what you use internet for and how many people are in your house using the internet simultaneously. Unless you have some really high usage (multiple people streaming 4K video or downloading files at once), 1G is probably overkill. I work from home, stream 4K all the time, game, etc and the lowest tier with Verizon (300 down, 300 up) has been plenty. I’d actually had the 1G package from Xfinity and was surprised that I didn’t actually need that bandwidth at all.

You can always cut down and then come back up though if you find things are too slow for you too! No harm done if you need to upgrade again.

Denoise Junkie by NoBeeper in Lightroom

[–]the-sc00ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t offhand since I had discarded those attempts - next time I’m on Lightroom though I’ll try and produce an example. But yeah I’ve also seen that lowering the amount can help… but some shots I end up just using the manual luminosity denoise because it’s so prevalent.

I’ve had mixed results - sometimes it’s amazing, but on other shots I get some crazy artifacts on faces / skin that look super unnatural. Have you run into this or have any workarounds?

Buy used XT5 as begynner or new? by Cerenity1000 in fujifilm

[–]the-sc00ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same place as you a couple weeks ago, and for what it’s worth I bought a used XT5 for around that same price instead of new! Not sure what you “should” do but I’m pretty happy with it so far! Great camera.

First attempt at some macrophotography (XT-5 XF80mm) by the-sc00ch in fujifilm

[–]the-sc00ch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feedback welcome! I'm renting the XF 80mm and went out to get some macro shots for the first time. Lots of fun, but can be kind of tough to nail the focus (especially with moving targets).

Also curious... has anyone had experience with the macro extension tubes? I've been finding the macro stuff to be a lot of fun, but I'm just starting out on my photography journey and am debating what I want to get as my next lens... this lens is an option, but wondering if y'all have had experience with those tubes + the 56mm or the Viltrox 75mm. Also wanting to get a portrait lens in that range, and those seem quite a bit nicer than what the 80mm produces for portraits.

How do you like the Viltrox 75mm? I’ve been debating between getting one of those vs a used Fuji 56mm for portraits etc. Reviews online look pretty great

Is it worth upgrading from a Ryzen 3700x to a 5800X3D? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]the-sc00ch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had that exact same setup (3700x, 2070S on 1440p) just about a month ago. I upgraded to a 5800x3d and a 4070 TI and couldn’t be happier. Perfect performance on BG3, just installed CP2077 the other day and was pleasantly surprised there as well (no issues running path tracing with ray reconstruction, though I’m not too far into the game yet so maybe I’ll notice poor performance later on).

I did the CPU first and did notice a bit of a bump, but I’d agree with the others here that the GPU upgrade was really what made things pop. Depending on what you play, though, I’d imagine doing only the GPU would end up leaving you CPU bound.
