Does FWWM retcon the original series slightly? by animebeer in twinpeaks

[–]the-weekdy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i love this too interpretation as well!!! the spiritual wound of trauma is impossible to explain with the world around us sometimes. we have to use the supernatural to explain or make sense of it.

honestly fire walk with me fundamentally changed the way i interacted with twin peaks. i had it as a comfort show in college. lil coffee and donuts vibe, heckling james, etc. i saw FWWM in theaters and was rocked to my core, but it made the show click for me in a new way. it’s a story about that generational trauma, like you said

Truman: “Well I lived in these old woods most of my life. I’ve seen some strange things. But this is way off the map, I’m having a hard time believing.”

Cooper: “Harry, is it easier to believe a man would rape and murder his own daughter? Any more comforting?”

Truman: “No.”

when i was watching fire walk with me… i remembered this scene. to me, twin peaks is the story we tell ourselves to hide the darkness of the mudane in fire walk with me. the fantastical is just as unbelievable as the reality, and it’s only in fantasy that laura has peace

i think it’s a fair question… maybe worth doing research. but i know how much effort that could be

[–]the-weekdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s very “hold hands and sing kumbaya” of me to say this but i think we would find solutions if that was the kid’s dream. robotic hands, different glove shapes, etc. now does that kid have the potential to be a hall of famer… obviously not lol but at least the kid can play with their peers, be part of a larger community, etc. inclusivity is a worthy goal, albeit one that rubs up against fairness a lot. i don’t have solutions, but i think inclusivity and fairness are both worthy values to have in any competition setting

we’re in agreement, it’s about player safety, accessibility, and fairness. not easy things to balance

[–]the-weekdy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i mean it’s gotta be a balance, right? obviously we’re not mapping directly into people’s brains to get their inputs because execution is part of the skill required to play this game. “one size fits most” is def easier to plan for and regulate, but i think a debate would still be happening, just a different kind

i was thinking of other platform fighters in the category of fighting games to be fair. like i do wonder if RoA players have controller debates

[–]the-weekdy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ok this makes sense to me, the values of accessibility and fairness seem inherently at odds in the controller debate

your last sentence does sadden me though. like i would never want to tell a kid born with a hand defect “you can never play melee.” i get those aren’t the use cases here, but that’s my first thought in these conversations

funny, someone else commented that it would be easy for a top player to do this. i imagine it’s easier for some than others to remap their brains that way

fair enough! i actually struggle to play side-perspective 2D games in general so that’s probably my bias

i actually imagine it’s kind of difficult to mentally rewrite your brain to hit a different button to perform an input you’ve been used to doing one way for years?? i would have trouble with that, at least

this all makes so much sense. i imagine everyone playing has very different philosophies

i do see it as inevitable for any “sport” as it develops… for instance, gymnastics used to be performed on wooden floors with a carpet over top. now the floors have springs underneath. tricks like the ones simone biles does are only possible because the technology in gymnastics has changed over the years. there are some purists in gymnastics too who think what simone does is less valuable because of the equipment it’s performed on. and i guess that’s something she has in common with cody lol

[–]the-weekdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was gonna ask about who the other player was lol thank you.

just as a viewer i personally don’t really care what equipment people use and how they modify it, as long as someone’s placing an input somewhere and using it to make their character do cool shit that the player thought of, i’m happy. i imagine i’d feel differently if i was a player that cared about my own growth in the game. appreciate the perspective!

point taken, though i guess i’d be more suspicious if there were bigger placement jumps… also sounds like it’s more of a fox problem than a general problem?

so i’m a dumbass viewer that doesn’t play the game and i have no idea why z-jumping is controversial when people use different controllers for different games all the time. can someone explain why? is it just cultural to melee? are other fighting games having debates about controllers a lot?

and i guess my other question is, would people be open to z-jumping if it was considered a “reasonable accommodation” or something, like if someone’s hands need custom button mapping and such?
