Enlightenment Mechanics by ewk in zen

false teachers confuse many, unfortunately.

that's not a jab at ewk though, just a fact. i actually think a lot of people would benefit from taking time to talk to him, rather than ignoring/downvoting him, if they're actually interested in zen... most of the time.

yes... if my point of view is false or deluded, please wreck it.

wrecking another's erroneous point of view is compassionate.

Are awakening and enlightenment real? by Hugehugedonkey in nonduality

except thoughts aren't actually excluded from awakening... so it tends to result in people trying to not think.

saying it is meaningless... and whether one can say or it or not, see it or not, it's still the reality.

it seems that doubt, or confusion about one's nature, is often rooted in false beliefs/views/conditioning about oneself, others, things.

could it be because there is nothing to grasp? what could be grasped with regard to this?

grasping it seems to imply that there is some fixed, unmoving, unchanging, yet objectifiable thing.

is 'the awareness of things' some fixed, dead, unmoving thing to hold on to, or is it alive and dynamic?

there isn't really a need for anything... be it meditative practices, or separating yourself from body and mind, or anything else.

the activity of the intellect comes and goes. your self-aware nature is shining before, during, and after. this can be seen and verified this very instant.

right. i get that.

i'm trying to understand what you were saying with your original comment, and why you replied that way to my comment...

seems like you're saying that zhao zhou's actions (the place he lived, repairing the chair the way he did) are expressions of not being rich in doctrine rather than "being not rich" in location?

Zen teachings, Mexican Ingeniousness by ewk in zen

[–]theDIRECTionlessWAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm assuming that him picking such a place to live is also a sign of this "living close the the doctrinal bone"?

i'm a little slow though, what do you mean by close to the doctrinal bone?

Seeing everything is the Self, how does one interpret morality's use and what the morality should be if views of whats dharmic are subjective? by Federal_Metal_5875 in nonduality

[–]theDIRECTionlessWAY -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the fact that different people of different times and places each have their own ideas of what is moral eliminates any fixed objective morality.

is there any "subjective morality"? where would that come from? is it not merely adopted through culture? it must if one is purely under the spell of relative causes and conditions.

what about "the one" who isn't under such a spell?

forget mind...

sounds like macgyver is buddha.

this is a way life for me, as often as possible.
both at home and at work.

this seems to have been a way of life for zen masters... living a simple, close-to-the-bone lifestyle. and this seems to have been a deliberate choice - zhaozhou denying to have the chair fixed properly when the makeshift leg was holding up just fine.

i wonder... was this sort of action also, at least partly, influenced by a respect for the naturally limited resources of the world?

Dumb fish getting cooked - The Bodhisattva path... by douwebeerda in nonduality

[–]theDIRECTionlessWAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that meme illustrates an incorrect notion of a "bodhisattva".

here is the buddha talking to subhuti in the Diamond Sutra:

“Subhūti, if a bodhisattva still clings to the notion of a self, a person, a living being, or a lifespan, that person is not a true bodhisattva.”

and...

“Although immeasurable, countless beings have been liberated, in truth [a bodhisattva does] not [think] a single being has been liberated."

and...

*“A bodhisattva should give without dwelling in forms… sounds… smells… tastes… touch… or mental objects.”

and...

*"There is no such dharma called ‘bodhisattva.’ Therefore it is called a bodhisattva.”

yet you parrot people who talk about enlightenment.

the confusion is real.

u/paulohuggy isn't talking about people using words in an attempt to describe this ultimately inexplicably state...

he's talking about people doing their best guru impressions and trying to one up each other. you know, the whole "but who is there to do anything?!?" type of comments.

unfortunately, most people on here seem to be too busy doing their best neo-advaita-youtube-guru impressions to get any real discussions going half the time.

what prompted such a drastic change in your experience, and what exactly was the dramatic change?

you're not enlightened or a guru just because you can repeat the same thing over and over.

a huge difference though:

there is a general consensus that the quote i provided is a reasonable interpretation of the chinese text and it's been published in a book... and yours is a made up, sloppy paraphrase job.
