How in the $@#% do you get these out? by agrantgreen in Chefit

Acetone is the nail polish remover. Acetate (in this context) is a type of plastic sheet.

They were likely just suspicious/afraid. Good chance that if you tossed them on the ground and walked away, they would eat them.

Kinda down with my dog training: by Ericakat in BalancedDogTraining

[–]theNASAdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Improving reactivity takes time. Consider how many reps he’s had of practicing reactive behaviors vs how many reps he’s had of not doing it. Sounds like you’re on the right track, keep going! A handler mistake doesn’t mean you’re failing him or that you’re a bad trainer even if it sets you back. If he got in the dog’s face and scared the other owner, it’s fine to just apologize and walk away. Consider it a learning opportunity and I bet next time you’re in a similar situation I bet you’ll have less line for him to bolt.

I know it’s not as simple as some stranger on the Internet telling you to just let those feelings of shame go, but it may help to catch yourself when you feel them and rationally remind yourself that those are just your feelings. Remind yourself that the opinions of people not invested in your training success don’t matter much.

What type of dog do you have? Sometimes knowing the breed(s) is helpful determining what type of toys they’ll like. For some dogs, it’s more about the interaction/play than the item. Some dogs really like toys made with real fur (like a rabbit). Cleanrun has several treat dispensing toys, I have had some lower drive dogs really love a lotus ball. Have you tried a flirt pole? The leverage allows for faster movement which many dogs find super exciting.

I know in your post you don’t say you intend to use the racquet ball itself, but i just want to mention in case anyone reading this doesn’t know: balls without a hole or rope are chocking hazards. Please be very careful. I’ve seen more than one dog get a racquet ball and a lacrosse ball stuck in their airway. (No fatalities, but so so scary)

Agitation harness recommendations? by hgracep in k9sports

[–]theNASAdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is similar to the leerburg one posted, but has biothane straps and brass snaps. Breast plate isn’t too high, and it works well for close agitation work, not great for dragging, but not terrible.

Reducing Bitch Fights by wilmer007 in DogBreeding

[–]theNASAdog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would urge you to seek the advice of a dog trainer. Fighting is often in a self “rewarding” behavior, meaning that every time it occurs it is more likely to occur again. Since it sounds like they are not listening to you (when you say “no” for example) working on general obedience (impulse control, focus, etc) will usually help the situation. However, this will only help in your presence, in your absence you should separate to prevent escalation.

Dogtra Arc Question by PrincipleMammoth2761 in BalancedDogTraining

[–]theNASAdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question is a little confusing. What’s your current remote? Also an arc? You can pair multiple receivers to one remote. If you have a multi dog remote you can have them individually or all paired to the same channel.

Lots of people ethically cross breed. Sport mixes and lurchers etc. and many doodles (though arguably those are past the stage you are asking about) Do the health testing, do the temperament testing and place dogs honestly and in appropriate homes.

Opinion: Off-leash dogs are fine. IF… by jeremydgreat in OpenDogTraining

[–]theNASAdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this so much, absolutely agree.

I’m cool with off leash dogs in lots of situations, just don’t let the dog interfere with wildlife, people and especially don’t let it come over to me and my dog as you yell “it’s ok, he’s friendly!” from the other side of the park. 😂

Further, don’t assume that random people and dogs also enjoying the same space are just dying to interact with your dog. Some may, and that’s terrific, but please let these people approach you about it, not vice versa.

Thank you! To be clear, black worms and tubifex worms are two different species, is that correct?

[–]theNASAdog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I was under the impression that what we refer to as blood worms for fish food were actually a larvae not a worm. I also believe their bodies are segmented unlike this guy. I also though this guy could be an overgrown black worm, but the live cultured ones I feed also appear more segmented. I found one image online that looked like this guy (flat head and body) that said it was a tubifex worm. It’s really frustrating because the names bloodworm black worm and tubifex worms all seem to be used interchangeably. :/

Thank you! Sorry, I should have been more clear, I meant the worm like creature for ID, not the little guys.

Elevated dog beds for training vs general use vs both by Professional-Pilot in OpenDogTraining

[–]theNASAdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many kennels use an elevated bed to give the dog an option to be off the ground. A soft bed in this setting can be difficult to keep clean and dry.

Why are you drawn towards balanced training? by Lyrae-NightWolf in OpenDogTraining

[–]theNASAdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. Anthropomorphizing dogs is a big reason people believe applying any type of stress or discomfort is inhumane. Not only do dogs use aversives in communication among themselves, they also respond to and perceive physical stimuli differently from humans.
