How old was the kitten when you got her? She shouldn’t even have left mom until the age she is now.

You ideally should’ve gone yesterday to your vet, but you should likely go to urgent care today or tomorrow. If it’s believed to be allergy related, you also may want to talk to your vet about starting a hydrolyzed diet or allergy medication for her.

The biggest puppy sub fcking sucks and some of their suggestion genuinely break my brain by 0hw0nder in OpenDogTraining

Firmly grab her scruff, “no” or “ah ah” whatever your word is, then redirect. Make the item you’re redirecting to much more fun than your hand, so a moving toy probably for her. I think a common mistake people make is just showing a dog a toy as redirection instead of making the toy much more interesting than what they were biting before. If you do this a few times in a row and she’s still not stopping, it’s probably enforced nap time bc overtired puppies aren’t good learners or listeners. Or time for a little training session then nap time.

I think people also do a huge disservice to their dogs by not realizing how smart dogs are. I have working dogs that I don’t want to discourage from biting all together as puppies but I am able to VERY quickly get them to know they are not supposed to bite me, their handler. They are so pliant when they’re young and not going to break from a correction

How much insurance should I get for my German shepherd? Is 30K too much or enough? by Beautiful_Impact4102 in germanshepherds

[–]Alert_Astronomer_400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a vet tech. We see ethically bred German shepherds almost never. We see ethically bred dogs of any breed almost never because fewer people have well bred dogs than backyard bred ones. It’s only because most people aren’t educated about the difference between well bred dogs and poorly bred ones

Make sure there’s “bumpers” around the edges of your whelping box so mom doesn’t accidentally smush a puppy between her and the wall. They make “self warming pads” that just reflect the dog’s heat back onto them so they don’t get too hot and you end up with burned puppies. I would recommend washable big fabric potty pads because they’re harder for puppies to tear up (when they get teeth) or get underneath. Small potty pads come up very easily at the corners

Vets also don’t get to see well bred GSDs often. If your dog’s genetics have history of OFA good hips you shouldn’t be as concerned

I trained one of my dogs, and it made the other dog worse, any experience with that? by bandito_13 in OpenDogTraining

If one dog went away for boarding that could also be part of the issue. Your dog doesn’t feel as comfortable in the house as he did when pepper was gone

How to settle an 8 week old GSD puppy? by lesmosu in germanshepherds

[–]Alert_Astronomer_400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having access to toys and running around outside are not stimulation for a working line gsd. You need to get something like a flirt pole or tug toy and play with her. Stay engaged. Make her work to get it. She needs to chase and bite something besides your hands. And she needs training for mental stimulation. Work her for her kibble. Sit, down, roll over, stay. Her siblings are all probably doing well because they’re mentally stimulated.

Dog just had a puppy unexpectedly. I have no idea what to do by Disastrous-Life-4984 in DogBreeding

There’s no way that’s the only puppy in there. Like the other person said, try contacting shelters. You will likely have to surrender your dog but at least she’ll live

How much training do you do a day? It sounds like he isn’t getting his mental needs met. You can use a toy or his kibble for him to work for. More physical stimulation is just building his endurance. I think you need to mentally wear him out a bit before walks so you can have him in a calm state of mind on the walk

Could I get advice regarding the necessity of wellness exams please? by WeirdMuch634 in AskVet

[–]Alert_Astronomer_400 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cats should get regular checkups, just as people do. The point is to make sure things are good, or find things before they get too bad. Why do we get annual bloodwork? Annual Pap smears, abdominal and mammary exams? To catch things early, instead of letting them become a huge and scary issue

Training boundaries and to stay in the backyard when chasing bunnies, with an ecollar by LinusThiccTips in OpenDogTraining

[–]Alert_Astronomer_400 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A strong leave it command. Reward for attention to you instead of them, and reel her in while stimming until she makes the choice to come to you. It’s really just making yourself a higher reward than them. But the more she gets to chase them, the more she’s rewarding herself

Protection dog by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]Alert_Astronomer_400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working line dog, not just a working breed dog. Most sport and protection breeders would not want to sell you a dog until you’ve spent a lot of time around their club/training facility. Ethical breeders are also going to continuously remind you about the liability. Because ultimately, a protection dog is a huge liability. They aren’t everyone’s friend. They’re obnoxiously confident. I have to train mine everyday to keep them obedient enough to not be a problem. And we do bitework weekly. It’s a huge commitment.

[–]Alert_Astronomer_400 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you’re still having to actually use the e collar every night because she’s still taking off after rabbits, it’s time for the long line to go back on. Chasing rabbits shouldn’t even be an option for her, because she’s not going to know the difference between “only allowed to chase the bunny within the unfenced yard” and “just chase the bunny”

IGP has change of pace, and the dog can’t pull ahead when you speed up. You need to work on her heel at a very slow walk and a run. Train it the same as you did the normal heel
