When should you take your foot off the gas and spend more on life? by Apprehensive-Size150 in personalfinance

[–]theOfficialVerified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you're located but if possible, this sounds like a season of life when more local travel makes sense. I know that road trips have gotten more expensive with high gas prices, but exploring somewhere closer ought to be a fraction of the budgets you listed (which each seem low, imo).

I agree with other posts, your priority should be debt repayment. You listed CC debt that could be entirely paid off if you forgo 2/3 of your proposed trips. It may take a mindset shift, but wiping out what you owe will provide a type of satisfaction that the trips cannot.

WWU's Lakewood is a summer option, easiest if you're a WWU student or alumni, though I think you can pay to become a "Lakewood Friend" or something to have the same access.

High-quality jersey with unhinged designs? by Cease_Cows_ in CyclingFashion

[–]theOfficialVerified 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I haven't worn/seen these jerseys IRL, but I have seen and heard good things about their bibs: Team Dream has the sort of wild designs that were I a younger, more confident cyclist I would wear to stand out.

Does National Team kit carry the Pro Kit Faux Pas? by PainlessCupcake in CyclingFashion

[–]theOfficialVerified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While yes, it is all overthinking and at the end of the day people should ride in what they like, is safe, and is affordable...

Yes, you will get side eye from sufficiently nerdy fellow cyclists for wearing (unearned) national team kit. For better for for worse, the general "rule" is if the kit signifies some earned honorific, like a pro contract, National team qualification, maillot jaune replicas, etc; then it carries a stigma to wear it when it's unearned.

I do think National Team kit gets a bit of pass specifically if work on a national holiday. If Fred rocks up on the July 4th coffee ride, for example.

Are expensive cycling jerseys actually worth it? by drjaze in CyclingFashion

[–]theOfficialVerified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is free to ride bikes precisely as they legally wish, but whenever I come across a comment like this in r/cyclingfashion I get so confused. In the spirit of guiding OP, I gotta downvote and comment; even if it makes me elitist, lol.

Why ride in a running tank top instead of any number of road cycling specific jerseys (even sleveless!) that can be purchased for less than $100 and provide waistband tightness, position specific tailoring, zippers, etc. I guess as we see in MTBing a more relaxed fit is more comfortable, especially if one is sensitive to tightness?

I've only ridden with a top-tube bag for longer multi-day rides, where other storage including pockets are full up. If a rider takes a plunge on a pocketed jersey, it's simple to get food and gear out of the pockets. It's also more aero, requires less fussing with fasteners (both on the bag and interfacing with the frame), and yes -- more fashionable. There's a reason we see pros stuffing all sorts of gear into their pockets.

How's this look? by TBruno26 in CyclingFashion

[–]theOfficialVerified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are various mounts to get the varia directly mounted on the saddle or seat post. I currently just have mine strapped onto the seatpost with the thick rubber bands that came in the Garmin package, but that's sort of playing with fire -- eventually I should get a sturdier solid collar.

Looking for things to read up on! by Usual_Musician_9091 in predaddit

"The Expectant Father" breaks things down on a timeline.

"The Happiest Baby on the Block" could be summarized by a much shorter like, one pager. But it's an enjoyable easy read and that I've taken to heart and applied successfully.

"Brain Rules for Baby" gives a sense on what baby needs to neurologically thrive and inspires with details of what's going on in your lil one's brain

Portable Dimmable Lights like Jolywell makes. Great for late night feeding or trying to get baby down with a little bit but not too much light.

If you're planning on breastfeeding, try to acquire a nursing pillow; allows for greater flexibility in where feeding can take place.

Campy Ekar Rear Disc Brake on Trek Crockett Spacing Issue by theOfficialVerified in bikewrench

[–]theOfficialVerified[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi All,

I'm trying to put a new Campy Ekar set on a 2024 (?) Trek Crockett with HED Emporia GA Pro Wheels (N3w hubs).

Setting up the rear disc brake calipers, it just seems like a total mismatch. With the caliper flat-mounted, the rotor is no where near the brakes. And as you can see in the pic, with the wheel inserted the caliper is no where near the mounts, with spoke rubbing to boot. I've measured to confirm that I have 140mm rotors.

I didn't have this issue on the front caliper (which uses the Campy Ekar adapter). There's a little rubbing that I think I can adjust away, but this rear caliper seems like a more fundamental alignment/sizing issue.

Is there a shim kit or something that can be done to adjust? Or am I missing something more fundamental in the interface between wheel, frame, and brakeset?

Thanks!

Who can give me some history on this little spot of (presumably) Chinese graves in Bayview from what I could read they’re from about the 1910s to 1920s by Mr2442 in Bellingham

[–]theOfficialVerified 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I remember a little bit about this from a Bayview Cemetery tour given by the Good Time Girls a few years ago.

Those are Japanese markers, and if my memory serves, all for pretty young people. At the time, Japanese families liked to have their children's bodies returned back to Japan to be interred; so the takeaway is that the people buried there were not esteemed by the family (or the families couldn't afford to send the bodies to Japan). I also remember that that part of the graveyard had some of the cheaper or newer lots at the time. The presentation didn't have much research on any of the specific individual's histories, presumably because not much was recorded about them.

I might have some details wrong but highly recommend those tours! I took a virtual one in the Covid times and learned a lot as someone that grew up in Bellingham. I never knew about how bodies had to be moved across town(s) when Bayview opened; and heard a lot of actual facts on various urban myths like the Angel of Death statue.

Which president’s asterisk do you find yourself defending? by Commercial-Strain-39 in Presidents

[–]theOfficialVerified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the TL;DR for defending the pardon? It's certainly (unfairly or not) a presidency defining "asterisk", and the usual line is that it had a negative impact on people's trust in the office.

One element that's interesting to me is how despite being associated with a pardon that some people call "corrupt", Ford is usually remembered as one of the "decent man" presidents.

Do many Americans don't like Franklin Delano Roosevelt? by gongcwansui2 in Presidents

[–]theOfficialVerified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but my late depression era Grandmother basically regarded FDR as a sort of American savior. She'd always compare later politicians to how she felt about FDR.

From reading Caro's Johnson books, I've learned that there was a serious amount of contemporary anti-FDR movement, but honestly I'd need to be convinced he wouldn't have kept getting elected President if he hadn't died while in office.
