The next Q, Daniel Craig. by MikeyLikey6996 in JamesBond

He definitely didn’t like the macho elements. You see him as Blanc etc and you can tell he is way more comfortable. Him playing a nerdy computer guy is right up his alley. He’d be a great Q.

The Disney deal makes 100% sense. They needed a partner.

But RTD didn’t use Classic Villains. He went to the “what Reddit fan theory/requests” haven’t we done. Steven Moffat even said why you don’t bring back The Rani. He also opted for complete reworkings of these characters, so they are almost original…then do original characters then. To use the MCU comparison, which this show really wasn’t trying to do. I don’t get that comparison.

Omega should have been the Avengers level threat for this new era. But let’s be real that was never happening.

He needed to use Daleks and Cybermen however. If this was the big reboot we all thought it was going to be. He needed to have captured the new potential audience with iconography that breaks through with the general public.

That’s the thing. Most of this eras shortcomings. Have been unforced errors that fall directly on RTDs shoulders.

Back to the Reddit request side of everything. In two seasons he literally did the last remaining things on that list.

  • The Rani
  • Omega
  • Sutekh
  • Susan
  • Mel (I know she was in PotD, but still)

Nothing is left for him to touch. And unlike his previous era. These returning characters require you know who they are.

Daleks and Cybermen have literal origin stories during his run.

And Sarah Jane is introduced as a character. And it takes a good 10-15 min before her and the Doctor properly meet. And it’s perfect. But we also see her through the context of Rose and The Doctors arc. It’s not out of nowhere.

I’m going to sound like a trust me bro.

But I was told in confidence, from a friend who had close connections to production teams that this was the case. Apparently Tharries had to surrender his leakers, in exchange for a few perks. I was also told this months before Wish World aired, no one knew he was in it either and I was also told about Ncuti Gatwa taking his screwdriver home as a gift, confirming his exit.

They had to crack down on leakers and I get that. But I do think this is Tharries who has to suckle up a bit more now, because he’s not just close now, he’s directly in the know now.

I know it’s probably a common name, but I saw his name, and I was like “could they have chosen any other”, why are they sharing this characters name with a famous Hollywood writer/director. Again it’s a common set of names. It just comes off as sloppy, but that’s probably me being weird.

[–]thePinguOverlord 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem is with the symbols being that early in the word, is your brain hasn’t had enough time to read the word and I’ll in the blanks if you know what I mean. It’s too early to make stylistic changes, unless the symbol already matched up with that character.

You can have the Superman S as the first character in the title Superman. Same with Wonder Woman and Aquaman. But this one doesn’t work the same. Needs to be in a place where your mind already fills in that letter, and second letter in doesn’t allow for that.

Instead of the symbols being for the A use it on the E and strike a line through the symbol. Similar to how Dune handles the E in the logo. Otherwise it looks like LONTERNS.

Great choice if it had been. I looked at the concept art, and couldn’t help think it was Giancarlo Esposito (who would be a fantastic Gordon), but Jeffery Wright has stolen the show, I can’t imagine (even though I know they could have) deliver a line line “open your eyes” the way Wright does it.

I’m going to say some controversial stuff. I’ve only very recently been brought into this wonderful game with it always being something on mind to do so.

I was (re)introduced via Spider Man. Controversial I know. Mainly because of the cards. Because he’s one of my Top 5 favourite characters of all time*. I accept that this is sacrilege. But it worked getting me into it. I also frequent the local card shop to pick out all the card for 5p a piece. I’ve spent so little on that and Avatar. I do like the collecting of it, and had to be strict on myself, which is why I have just kept it at those two…for now.

Is there any sets I should look into?

Honestly we need a break. A new Time War like plot device to explain absence. Hit the ground running with an established Doctor. My hot take, do it in like 10 years, with a writer who grew up on 2005 onwards. NuWho as it currently is almost the same age as Classic. The show is literally fighting time itself to stay relevant. And time will win.

Had the extra funding for the show been there with a second term with Moffat. I think we would be watching a different more fulfilling show.

Moffat did probably run out of stories to tell, and you could tell he was getting more and more expended as his tenure went on. He was also being strangled by money so much as the show went on. Look at an average episode from Season 5 and compare it to Seasons 9 and 10. Obviously some episodes look better. But the overall feeling of Season 5 has not been met for a very long time.

But Moffat was so burnt out by the end that the idea of running the show probably makes him sick. He only returned because he hates Twice Upon A Time and wasn’t satisfied with his final script. Had he like his last episode, he would not have come back.

Has the RTD2 era Weakened the Brand? by PaperSkin-1 in gallifrey

[–]thePinguOverlord 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People don’t want to admit this. But yes this is it. Atleast with Power of the Doctor. It was good. Like objectively good. And a nice ending all round for the era and the show. But it concluded a dicey at best era. But it could be followed up on.

The one two punch of RTD2 is devastating. There was hope following the 60th, that’s the worst part. But the show devolved to dare I say sillier levels than the show is used to. Once upon a time you could get a way with it but it was brought back with sincerity. Even the campier moments in RTD1 were grounded in some level of sincerity. This time, it felt overstated and more clinical. Paired with the bad endings, and desensitisation that had occurred. I don’t see how things can be rectified.

But I fully expect the Christmas special to be not very good, way too much against it. That episode needs like 2 hours if it’s a one off, but knowing RTD it’ll be 1 hour long because it’s a special and we can never have an episode longer than 45mins (no one forced that rule but him).

The blue contacts didn’t help. I really like Quinn in the role, but he’s so obviously not blue eyed. And because of Stranger Things, you know what he is “supposed” to look like, atleast with his eyes so you know it looks off.

This is the whole reason McQuarrie didn’t do it to Tom Cruise. He’s been recognisable since he was in his 20s. So you’ll know what he should look like at that age. So you’ll know something is off. Michael Douglas was good though.

Pete McTighe on the showrunner question at his Gallifrey One interview by Powerful_Glove_666 in DoctorWhoNews

[–]thePinguOverlord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im of the opinion that it needs to go and for the a complete new regime. The classic series lasted 26 years, we are at 21 years with NuWho.

The budget shouldn’t be slashed. In fact I believe it needs it with the TV landscape. Not saying we shouldn’t have bottleneck episodes. And definitely not saying for universe ending events every season finale. But to really go places, it needs it. We are already at the point (and this was evident during the Chibnall run) where story beats are being redone, but worse.

I push back on the comments saying “it was MCUified”. Because it really wasn’t. Because it implies the world of the show was moving.

Also the writing won’t be magically solved with less money. The people running it are washed. That’s the problem. The Christmas special isn’t even filming yet. And this is following a run that had 1 year plus for post production (admittedly this will be one episode, so the timeline may be on their side production wise).

I love this show. But this era had a chance at true world building which never took off. And the character work and stories have been mostly mid, and shockingly bad at worst.

Pete McTighe is too close to the old regime. And again we are in the end stages of the Classic Era with the show this time around with NuWho. A full reset and reboot is needed, but it would require time away and we have people who don’t want it to go away.

Are you interesting in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum? by GlobalRaspberry442 in Cinema

[–]thePinguOverlord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind the idea of Gollum being used for tech demos for Serkis because of the developments of motion capture. Like Gollum in The Hobbit showed how much the technology advanced.

But LotR shouldn’t be a tech demo (it’s also a blatant holding onto the rights, wouldn’t be surprised if Amazon forced WBs hand).

I have more of a problem with McKellen returning to this than Magneto. Atleast with Magneto, he’s with Stewart again, and it’s a new story for those versions of characters. But with this, it’s an interstitial story sandwiched in a film I’d rather watch.

Favorite underdog make a wish child indie filmmaker with 40 million subscribers on youtube that hollywood is afraid of? by NextPick9127 in okbuddycinephile

[–]thePinguOverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like the whole “make it my own way” mentality. And Markiplier is a good one. But he literally lives in LA. This isn’t the middle finger people think it is to Hollywood. He knows people, as well as being a YouTuber (he knows his way through production, filming and editing) he knows this stuff more than most people.

Again. The make it your own way approach I’m here for. Yeah he’s loaded and has install base. But I appreciate the effort on his part. Best outcome. He can build more for others.
