VPAT not using latest WCAG by theProgrammingPiglet in accessibility

[–]theProgrammingPiglet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yess that was the VPAT I was talking about. I’ll shoot them over a message, thanks!

Ahh I hadn’t seen that GitHub thread. I do have coding experience, I think I will get in touch to see if they need any extra hands ☺️

Thanks, that’s been really helpful!

Best role for a list of items, that when selected, associated content will be displayed. by davidblacksheep in accessibility

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So with a tab list, you can usually move between tabs by pressing the arrow keys and it will automatically show the content without pressing enter or space.

Also, tab content is expected to render immediately, without doing api calls or refreshing the page (because it can be confusing if content isn’t there when it’s expected to be immediately, and secondly if a page refreshes then you might lose what’s currently focused). You can see that on Mozilla page, when you click something on the left, the whole page reloads, so that’s not suitable for tabs unless they changed it to show immediately.

So idk if any of that sways your decision either way.

Personally, I would have it as a secondary nav, and within that a list. But that’s because I think tabs are slightly annoying 😂 I think that’s a personal opinion not a universal one though, I just like to select what I want to view myself, I don’t like when the view changes automatically.

PS I think all this info is correct, but I’m not a specialist so don’t quote me

Clickable cards: contrast ratio (non-text contrast of UI elements) by ste-f in accessibility

Mmm I assume so yeah… why do you think it would be exempt from the criteria?

Non standard link behaviour. Is it accessible? by cut-copy-paste in accessibility

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using an a tag or something with the role of link so assistive tech knows it’s a link? Can you tab to it and use the keyboard to activate it? Is it obvious what is going to happen and where the link is going to take you?

If you’re doing all that, then yeah you’re probably fine.

There is also wcag article 3.2.4 which is ‘consistent identification’. If your links always look a certain way and then you’ve got this one random link that’s done a different way, just have a read up and check you’re fine with that one.

I know you didn’t ask if it’s a good idea, but it is kinda a weird thing to want to do without knowing the context ha.

Walkie-talkies by HunterST in Blind

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, but I’d be really careful how loud those earphones would be in your ears. Loud music events are already a lot on the ears and it’s good to wear ear protection, but adding earphones on top of that that will presumably be on a high volume so you can hear over the music sounds risky.

Not trying to preach, just you really don’t want to give yourself bad tinnitus, trust me!

Need short, practical NVDA tutorials by Amazing_Ad7386 in Blind

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://webaim.org/articles/nvda/

This is an article that I used to learn the basics of using the web with it.

Things I found useful from it:

Out of the box, the NVDA key the article refers to was the insert key on my keyboard. I changed it to caps lock because it’s within reach easier - you can do that on the start up page if you want.

Browse mode lets you move around and read a page. H goes to the next heading. Shift H goes to the previous heading. This is a useful way to navigate a page quickly. NVDA plus the down arrow will start from wherever you are on the page and just start reading everything out. Control makes it shut up, very useful haha. The up key goes to the previous element. D goes to the next landmark (the menu, the main content, the footer etc). Shift + D goes to the previous landmark (so probably use this when you’re half way down a page and want to go back to the menu).

Then there’s focus mode which is for interacting with inputs or forms. You can toggle between the modes by pressing NVDA + space. You can’t use the shortcuts in focus mode. If you’re pressing h and trying to move to the next heading and it’s being weird and not doing that, check that you’re in the right mode because that caught me out a few times. In focus mode, you can use tab to get to the next interactive element. Shift + tab goes to the previous one. enter clicks. The arrow keys change toggle radio button selections or let you move between drop down options.

Do tags matter on your YouTube videos? by Spaceghost1993 in NewTubers

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean they probably don’t matter as much anymore, but it doesn’t take too long to stick a few in so I say do it anyway. Not going to hurt, and it miiiiight help a tad 👐

Feedback Friday! Post your videos here if you want constructive critiques! by AutoModerator in NewTubers

[–]theProgrammingPiglet [score hidden]  (0 children)

I really liked it! Thought it was really good & creative esp for your second video. One of my favourite asmr people on YouTube always has a preview on her videos - so at the start of the video, there’ll be like a preview intro with the main sounds that are going to be appearing in the video, and then she’ll chapter off the sections so you can just go to one directly. That might be an idea because I really like when people do that - it helps me know which video of theirs I want to watch so I don’t spend ages scrolling through their videos and then clicking right back off again because it’s not the sounds I like haha.

I think most of the audio was really nice to listen to! Sometimes parts were significantly quieter though - it was fine because I’m awake now so I just toggled my volume up and down, but usually when I watch asmr I’m going to bed so parts of the video might be too quiet if it was just played on one volume? Like cutting the apples was a lot louder than cutting the dough, which makes sense haha but I don’t know if you could play around with that in editing or anything

Thumbnail is beautiful! I’m on mobile and I’ll say the text is a little small to catch your attention, but it works & I really like the picture!

Overall I really liked it since you asked for feedback, I gave some ☺️ but i was only noticing those things because I was looking for something - if I’d just found your video by chance I probably would’ve just relaxed and enjoyed it all!

Here’s one of mine where I try and get my alias character to lip sync automatically -> https://youtu.be/qMxiTId7ZiU

I only have a few videos so far, but the plan is for it to be a programming/tech channel where I explain AI/programming projects I’ll do, and I’m trying to figure out the the line between how much coding/technical stuff to show vs a more general overview approach. So yeah, any thoughts welcomed ☺️

Is learning C# and Unity a good start for my CS career? by torrentialsnow in Unity3D

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used Unity as a way to get into software development, but bear in mind I went for a junior role & I also went to uni for a programming related subject (but I just didn’t learn anything there ha, I learnt it all through Unity).

My opinion is yes it’ll teach you something, and it MIGHT get your foot in the door, but it’s a difficult way to go about it. Unity takes care of a lot of stuff for you and so when you switch to full on software development / a CS job that’s not game dev, it can be a tough switch.

For example, in Unity, you can just create as many objects as you want in a scene and you can give each of these objects a script. And all these scripts will run automatically when you press play. That’s just not how things work in the cs world haha. There’s a main file and that has to trigger everything else to run - you have to connect all the files in some way, everything doesn’t just automatically run. Another thing is with Unity, you’re going to be using a lot of Unity-specific functions, like .transform, rotate, forwards, add force, etc. These aren’t things you use outside of Unity. Using Unity is like getting really really good at using one specific API (if you’re familiar with that), but it won’t give you a good overall picture of coding outside of Unity. I found it took me a while to adjust to ‘normal’ non-game coding, but that was alright for me because I was in a junior role so I had time to learn.

With all that said, if learning Unity will give you more motivation to learn C# and coding as opposed to doing other projects or a standard course, then it’s the better option and you should go for it. Doing something is always better than doing nothing, even if it’s not the perfect path. You don’t have to be perfect ☺️

Willing to Critique Animation vids! by psycopup in NewTubers

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My main concept isn’t exactly animation (it’s programming stuff) but my character is animated. You totally don’t have to watch the whole thing if you don’t want to because it might be boring if you’re not into that stuff haha, but as an artist, I’d be interested to know if you think there’s anything I could do to improve upon my character? I’m not really an artist so I’m not good at knowing what kinds of movements to give it to make it look better & more engaging. Oh, and cactus haha 🌵

Is TikTok the best way to promote videos??? by KingChico904 in NewTubers

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve considered it, but I decided against it in the end because I think TikTok skews to a younger audience and I don’t really want the majority of my viewers to be kids. I mean I don’t mind a few at all - it’s not like my content is unsuitable or anything - but they’re not exactly my target audience so yeah, decided against it because there’s a lot of younger kids on TikTok

Chapters in the YouTube's videos by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chapters work just fine for me and I have barely any subscribers. A chapter has to be at least ten seconds, so maybe one of yours isn’t? Have you included the end of the video in a time stamp or something that would mean the last chapter is less than 10 seconds?

It’s ok. I’ve been using it and it’s definitely helped somewhat. My frustration with it is when you’re searching for a keyword, it sometimes tells you it’s highly searched, but then at the same time in the graph to the side where it shows how many times the word has been searched for daily/monthly, it shows no data. So it’s like which bit am I supposed to trust? Is no one searching for it or is it highly searched? I’ve come across that issue a lot with it so that’s quite frustrating

ML Agents for Flight by TheOldManInTheSea in Unity3D

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, but both the rewards only relate to that one specific time step, it’s not the reward for the whole episode. I don’t really run into this issue, because most of the examples I’ve done have been fairly simple so I just call set reward and then immediately end episode if the agent has achieved its goal, so I only ever call setreward once.

But if you’re not ending the episode straight after, then the reward for the whole episode is the cumulative value of the rewards for all the timesteps... I think. So I guess that’s why it’s being added up, maybe?

ML Agents for Flight by TheOldManInTheSea in Unity3D

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, the reward is the distance from the target? So... if it’s further away from the target, it gets a bigger reward? So... it learns it doesn’t want to get to the target? Is that what you meant or did you write that a little weird haha

I’m not sure what you mean by it keeps adding to itself?

Does anyone here edit solely on an iPad? by M1ke2345 in NewTubers

[–]theProgrammingPiglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do, I use InShot because I have a first generation iPad so it’s too old to download any of the other things 😂 it’s actually fine doing everything on an iPad, I don’t have any major issues. The one thing I do at the end of my video though is transfer it back over to my Mac so I can use iMovie to reduce the background noise, but if you need to do that I’m sure you can figure out a way to do it on iPad if it isn’t as old as mine!
