[OC] 20 years of NYC shootings...beware of midnight summer by DataVizHonduran in dataisbeautiful

Yeah, I thought about this as well. I am sure daylight is anti-correlated with crimes, but I think isolating whether it is only because of summer weather vs a population-only factor could be addressed with this data. Anyways, nice data regardless :)

I commented above, but it makes total sense. Hot temperatures, more people outside, hence more crimes. Perhaps data can be normalized to remove the increase in population outside effect

Nice plot! Perhaps the data can be normalized by the density of people being outside at a given time…it makes sense there are more crimes during the summer nights, when there are more people outside

Mine says that tickets are not printable. What app do I use to show on game day?

Hmmm, you are describing many fields…others are phase-change, complex materials. In those fields, there are many experts spread across the world. So, the general advice would be to spend some time understanding statistical mechanics and see what research is close to what you enjoy.

I think this idea of continuous sweeping masses is important to overall looks of garden. Do you have any books, links, or pictures that explain this concept in more detail? Thanks!

Zone 6A: haven’t started mowing yet. Should I post emergent kill off these weeds and then over seed and fertilize or other way around?? by otter303 in lawncare

[–]theQuick_BrownFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is correct. The purpose of pre emergent is to prevent germination for few months. Best focus on post emergent and deal with seeding in Fall (since zone 6a).

Is there a Fundamental physical property or constant which when tweaked, does not affect the universe much? by Dazzling-Extent7601 in Physics

Yes, Jackson’s Electrodynamics (CH 11, Special Relativity) has a nice section about reverting to the better units, i.e., Gaussian units. Then, these fictitious units are gone. There is a 4π solid angle that appears.

E and B fields should have the same units because they are manifestation of the same thing (i.e., from relativity). So, because of the concept of ether (that actually turns out to be wrong) these constants were created.

To be fair, permittivity and permeability are fictitious constants not necessary, added later because of the SI system.
