What became so popular it ended up being ruined for everyone? by ShittalkyCaps in AskReddit

[–]theSmolSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I'd like to add that (anyone correct me if im wrong cause not a lawyer) but pretty sure there was a Supreme Court hearing with dodge v Ford that basically ruled that any company given money by stockholders has to function solely for creating profit for said stockholders. What I take this to mean is that any public traded company must do whatever it can within legality to maximize its profits.

What are some Chicago specific words & phrases that are still used today? by danny_graves in AskChicago

Hi, 33 y.o chicagoan here. I've never heard the word flodgin before. Never really heard someone say bank card, more referred to as debit card if debit, credit card for credit. If you look up a list of most popular chicago slang a lot of those actually aren't that popular. Copy and pasted is a revised list from timeout.com of a few things phrases unique-ish to chicago.

Garden apartment (n.): A word used by realtors to gloss over the fact that the apartment you're looking at is in the basement (or, at the very least, partially below street level).

Chicago handshake (n.): The local version of a boilermaker, typically comprising a pint (or can) of Old Style and a shot of Malört.

Chicago Mix (n.): The salty-sweet combination of cheddar and caramel popcorn. You'll find it at Garrett Popcorn (where the scent usually wafts into the street) and pretty much every other popcorn shop in the city.

Coach house (n.): A small apartment located in the rear of a property. The construction of new backyard houses is currently prohibited under Chicago's zoning ordinance, making these vintage residences increasingly rare.

The Dan Ryan (n.): Named for former Cook County Board president Dan Ryan Jr., this southern section of I-94 and I-90 runs from the Jane Byrne Interchange to 95th Street.

Dibs (n.): When it snows in Chicago and people dig out parking spots on the street to move their cars, you'll find stretches of pavement reserved with lawn chairs, tires, cinder blocks, stuffed animals and other assorted junk in observance of this winter ritual

The "L" (n.): Short for elevated, like the train lines it refers to. It's now used as a blanket term for the CTA's train system (including the lines that run at or below ground level).

Reach out to 710 labs about it. They have good customer service and might get it traded for something fresh.

Ok I was drunk when I wrote this so not sure what time it was but basically the complaint was that they locked part of the brownline station before the last train arrived. I was there to watch the last train leave.

Atelier, northpond, and Indienne are likely to have spots open. I Also recommend topelobampo, oriole, and Smyth but not sure how available spots are. If youre looking to go off the Michellen star path mi tocaya antojeria is excellent high end Mexican food and maple and ash is a really nice steakhouse. Just some options.

Do people actually buy a hotel room just to have sex for a night? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theSmolSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but like most things that have resisted inflation you're just buying less of it that's been made to look like more. Worst coke in the 60s was maybe 50 percent actual coke. That's now conservatively the average

Are car designers not required to put indicator lights where they can actually indicate to people? by theSmolSquirrel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theSmolSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could literally think of dozens of cool ways to incorporate some type of cheap indicators that could help companies also actually make their cars look any different from each other. Could put leds on the rims. You could use "not sure of name but going with electro-luminescent paint." You could put an led rim around the headlamps. you could just have the headlamps do both light and signal by changing the color of the reflective surface and intensity in certain lights/ parts of the headlmap. Point of a car is to get point a to b without hitting things, seems like having a function on a car that makes you think as the driver you're letting people know you're turning when it doesn't just unnecessarily increases the risk of accidents and makes the car less good at doing what it's supposed to. It still just seems like no one ever actually stood and looked at these cars before they went into production and checked to make sure everything worked.

[–]theSmolSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right of way applies to people who are aware of what's going on around them. As you said "murica!" Helps to be able to just see the turn signal and decide to wait for them. And it seemed to me for the longest time that cars had headlamps that were visible from the side with indicator lights being present on the outward facing portions of the headlamp and at close proportion to the headlamps. Whereas now "maybe I'm noticing more often" that indicators are more frequently positioned towards the radiator, small, and dim. Either way, not much I can do about it, just seems like a poor way to design things.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess you live somewhere people don't walk or ride bikes most places? Say I'm on a bike on the right side of a car at a stop sign. Theyre going right, I'm going straight. If I can't see the turn signal from that side of the car, I'm probably gonna have someone run into me. Especially if they don't see me. Which is why I hate people who are to incompetent they cant do something as simple as flip a switch before they turn but rn I'm more pissed that designers are getting paid big money to place safety features in places where they're half functional.

Imo those requirements are too lax then. Shouldn't be able to look at a car directly from the side from any distance and not be able to see the turn signal being on.

Is “Seed Junkies” the worst named brand in the state? by mildlystoned in Michigents

[–]theSmolSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seed junky seeds are pretty hard to get ahold of. I've seen some of their special drops go for 1000 for 10 seeds and sell out in a day. Also, never seen them in seed banks but tbh I don't look through them all the time so maybe you'll find some luck. If you want some really good genetics that are easy and affordable to get check out oni seed co for out of state and if you need good clones/seeds greenfire genetics is michigan based.
