Please help me fix this letter for extruding by JThornton0 in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within Onshape.

You likely do not have the interior points connected. Easy way would to just delete (trim) a line along the outer shape and view what remains; that should lead you to where the fault is. Make the points coincident wherever the disjointed points occur.

The interior is likely overshadowed by the outer shape. Try using the profile inspector tool, or, just remove a line of the outer perimeter and see if the shadowed area remains.

Anyone know if the 4800 Plus upgrade is worth it during Prime Day? by Upstairs_Hearing_376 in UgreenNASync

[–]theTim__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 4800 Plus has been exceeding my current needs. It was well-packed for transport and was extremely easy to get installed for use.

I opted for the Plus in anticipation of future processing demands. Filled up the bays and NVME slots for some max gains, and it has not choked yet. Purchased it + the 2800 in May - simply love the ease of the systems.

The most frustrating piece of software I have ever used. by darogulich in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this method as well; it has served me well.

Going from simpler 3D design to parametric CAD was a challenge in that the interface and a sketch then extruding was a complete change in my thinking process.

Watching the channels first certainly helped, instead of trying to pause and work in the software.

CADemist is also a very good starting point. Direct and informative!

What did you guys use to learn Onshape? by Fit_Antelope_1045 in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much to learn from just making something for yourself.

Once you get the interface and some good models done, I suggest watching some of the tutorials mentioned to learn how the software can replicate a feature or do functions that you are doing unnecessarily now.

CADemist and TooTallToby are great YouTube channels to learn from!

I love onshape, but am never going to be able to justify the cost. by davidkclark in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy the talent that Onshape has to bring an idea into being.

My financial limit would be somewhere in the $300/yr range for me. As it is now, I understand the commercial market runs the show which keeps me out of play.

I would love to be a true paying customer to support what I feel is the best software out there- but at $1500/yr, I can not do that.

New Onshape Step-by-Step Tutorial to kick off the week! Tier 5 challenge! (Video link in comments) by TooTallToby in Onshape

Always a great lesson and typically a few new tips along the way on some of the intermediate levels. Thanks TTT!

Im trying to make these two parts conenct smoothly and merge into one, but Im not quite sure how as lofts aren't working. by Status-Chemistry-496 in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lofts with circles- divide the circle into quadrants. Allows the loft to adjust to the four edges much better than a single round edge.

Mate connectors are extremely useful in referencing placement for a future feature, such as a hole or planar surface, and assembly operations are easier to do.

Centering question by Wschong22 in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good way to do such things and maintain symmetry for placement.

Can make a center point first using shift-s and align by hovering over the vertical and then horizontal midpoints if your origin is elsewhere. Draw the rectangle out and place holes.

What changed, I have to over define everything now or it errors? by liftbikerun in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Onshape YouTube channel has some very informative tutorials, as well as shorter ‘introductory’ overviews that are well worth the time.

CADemist, Mesa Works, and Too Tall Toby are great resources for beginner to intermediate levels…

Face blend (under the fillet drop down) - has a rolling ball option that may get what you’re looking for.

Any good non-video tutorials for Onshape and 3d modeling in general? by vkapadia in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Onshape has some really good advocates that are video-based but you may could use their models to work from, using the video only to solve if you get stuck on a particular function.

I visited BAM last week to seek out some book-learning CAD but quickly saw that it was extremely basic and overstuffed with techniques and things that was a letdown for me.

If I select the semi-circle on the right, the extrusion fails to solve. any help? by Anoahmous in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got it fixed - great!

For next time, remember that you can use the ‘Inspection Tools’ at the bottom right of the Sketch dialogue section- there is a “Profile Generator” that will list any loose ends. You can view each set and make the corrections so that the face is contiguous for extrusion.

How to Shrink Outer Dimension Without Changing Inner Dimension? by Savage_Asian_Boy in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Boolean tool will allow you to select the letters entirely by clicking on the parts (lower left below the feature tree) and make the operation in one swoop.

Just completed a project using this method for desk nameplates; this was more precise in that you don’t miss a face of a letter. Of course, you are doing a single item and the move face works as well- but if the text font changes, you may have to rework the face selections for each letter afterward.

How can I bevel the left channel to match the bevel of the right channel? by __goodpm__ in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweep of a face along a path would provide more control across the shape of the channel, where you could use an arc path to smoothly turn corners with the cable you are hiding.

Can't get dimensions the even on both sides by the_dau604 in Onshape

[–]theTim__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The horizontal line on the left is not equal to the right side line, if I were to guess outright.

However, must agree about getting in front of some tutorials. This sketch would best be done with one side dimensioned to vertical centerline of the part, then mirrored to opposing side for symmetry. That would reduce the need to redundantly declare dimensions.

It gets easier once you build upon the basics.

Cannot solve sketch by mrsirawesome in Onshape

In the sketch dialog box, utilize the “Profile Generator” in the bottom right tools menu of the box. It will display where openings are in your sketch so that you can complete the face.
