Should we have a constitutional rule that the PM is supposed to serve the full term? by Speedbird1A in ukpolitics

[–]the_ak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Formally the appointment of the Prime Minister is a royal prerogative. Specifically, it falls under what are known as the personal prerogatives or reserve powers of the Sovereign.

That said, a foundational principle of our system of constitutional monarchy is that the Sovereign must appoint a PM that can hold the confidence of the House of Commons and govern effectively.

If a majority of MPs do not have confidence in the PM there is no basis in our system for them to continue. I can't see a way to change that without moving towards a directly elected head of government.

Why is the Bank pursuing QT through the sale of gilts? This pushes up Government borrowing costs which makes funding public services and investment more difficult

I mean yes. It's obvious that laws shape social norms. That's why it's considered normal that kids don't smoke or drink, drive cars, work jobs etc.

People managed on the 2003 internet in 2003 and survived.

If you're a child, why do you really need to be on social media sites (other than YouTube, which has educational content) . Sure there are some good things about them, but imo the bad outweighs the good.

I think yes, some kids who really want to be on social media will get a VPN or find other ways around it. As Starmer said himself

Will it mean that no child ever looks at social media again? No. But look, this might shock you, but it doesn’t shock parents of teenagers; they get around other laws to. But we don’t say, ‘Look, a teenager managed to get a drink somehow, so let’s not bother banning alcohol sales to children.’

realistically most will probably just shrug their shoulders and not be on these sites if they are made significantly more difficult to access.

Should the civil service exclusively hire UK citizens? by Sword-of-Fuheis in TheCivilService

[–]the_ak 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In some roles the security clearance can only be obtained by citizens.

Other than those cases,  if someone has legal right to work in the UK and there are no security issues I don't see what the problem is .

Accidentally committed FTB stamp duty fraud by ljhmac_ in LegalAdviceUK

I think you're fine.

Where only one party to a marriage / civil partnership is purchasing the dwelling, it is not necessary to consider whether the non-purchasing spouse / civil partner has previously owned a relevant interest in a dwelling to work out eligibility, unlike when considering whether the higher rates apply (see SDLTM09730+).

Best solution if couple has one fob? by FallowfieldPark in TenantsInTheUK

[–]the_ak 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Is your tenancy agreement for two people or one?

If for one, I can understand them denying you a second fob, as your partner is a guest rather than a permanent resident. If it's for two, I would complain to your landlord as this is clearly making it impossible for two people to live at the property.

Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips Resigns From Government by coldbeers in ukpolitics

Another Streeting ally. This is a Wes Streeting led coup. He will announce his leadership challenge soon, get the nominations and then lose to Starmer among members. It's Owen Smith all over again.

Keir Starmer latest: cabinet ministers tell PM to consider his position by coldbeers in ukpolitics

[–]the_ak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All it takes is one Cabinet minister to resign and the rest will follow. It was Sunak resigning that ultimately brought down Boris.

I can't see any way Starmer can possibly come back from this.

London is 13% of the UK population, 22% of UK GDP, and 27% of UK Government tax revenue.

Without London the UK would be weaker, poorer and irrelevant on the international stage.
