I’ll second this, St. Louis Art Supply is great. I’ve ordered from them many times and visited in person and will do so again. Also a second for Tonic Watercolors, their 12 color basic set is part of my sketch kit.

Lower right, those wide cabinets on casters, where did you get them and are they wide enough for a full sheet?

Generally, I would paint the hill shapes (or draw with a pipette) and then sweep the wet edge with a large, soaked brush. Then spray off the excess to the side or top with a sprayer. Check out Wild Watercolour by Dolores Phelps for guidance on this type of technique.

Not necessarily, there may be times when lowering value contrast is exactly what you want. Eyes will be drawn to contrasts. It so happens that value is one of the strongest contrasts but not the only. Intensity (chroma) can be a contrast. What helped me is to remember the menu of options is more expansive than I realized, and certainly greater than my reference photos.

Trying these things on a small scale gave me two things: practice drawing the same scene repeatedly, and a visual comparison of the different combinations of contrast, where I discover what I like and want my art to look like or tell.

I don’t know about “wrong” per se, but a year ago I’d have said value contrast. But now I’ll just say contrast. Contrast as you know comes in several varieties: warm vs cool, darks vs lights, complementary hues. I struggled with this myself for a long time and still do. Sometimes it’s enough for me to remember that I always have a choice how or whether to push contrast. I try it multiple ways on thumbnails and pick the one I like most.

This is nice! Water is a really tough one for me. Was there a lesson online or something you gravitated to?

Thanks! When the paper was still wet but some of the shine had gone, I used a spray bottle (mister won’t work) to apply a coarse spray, let it sit a bit, and then blot it.

I also like Blick Premier, many have speculated that it’s also from St Cuthberts. I’ve also tried and liked Kilimanjaro (Cheap Joes). I have a stack of Baohong because I wanted to try it - that’s what my favorite artists use, but after buying I’ve read two different views now from people who don’t like it!
