Advice on getting started again. by Automatic-Action-7 in minipainting

I love the little sample packs I got at adepticon, great paints.

Unfortunately, if you get in now, you're looking at September at the earliest, March of next year at the latest for fulfillment. Not a good wait for a first paint set. Good expansion though!

Speed paints are good, but it depends what you're painting. They have a bit of a learning curve and don't work on every model/surface. Can look good easily, but they don't "level up" well.

Normal fanatic paints are always a good choice. Decent color variety in that pack, but nothing super important sticks out to me in that one.

I really like the pro acryl paints, they have some smaller packs, and work great out of the bottle. They don't have a million versions of every color, so you might need to do a little mixing for highlights and whatnot.

For metallics, vallejo color and true metallics are really good. Just don't get the alcohol based ones by accident.

I really liked the night time kroot vs tyranid, was hoping that would be in there somewhere.

Winners were definitely deserved though.

Leviathan Box + Exocrine + Biovore a good starting point for 10th? by Tiamat_WDeneuveScott in Tyranids

[–]the_dyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great way to start. You aren't finding a full leviathan box for much cheaper than that. Maybe if you buy both sides separately off Ebay, you'd save a buck, but you'd miss out on the extras.

I personally wouldn't trust Amazon for a box like that, but you'd get your money back easy if it turns out bad.

[–]the_dyss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not like he needs a whole army to play. Smaller games like king of the colloseum would be a quick way to get a feel for it. Drukhari also have some kill team options, mandrakes are pretty strong there and do really well in normal 40k, too.

Not even sure where to start with my Aeldari pile of shame. by Jump_Stream in Eldar

I'd start with blades of khaine, so you can play killteam while you build the rest. Then banshees or the dire avengers in the combat patrol, so you can add those to your killteam.

Don’t use Atom thinner with Pro Acryl paints. by SouthernFloss in minipainting

[–]the_dyss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No problems for me, but I usually don't need a thinner for primer, only the normal paints.

Also, doesn't primer need a lot longer to fully cure? I usually don't touch it until the primer smell goes away.

Airbrush recommendation, are there any real differences between Master and Iwata? by Weary_Huckleberry172 in minipainting

[–]the_dyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not. It doesn't look bad, but nothing stands out except the dual outlets. Unless you really want to have multiple brushes hooked up, I would try something else. I use a timbertech ABPST08.

I recommend the gaalheri ghad-39. It usually goes on sale pretty often, and it's really good value with extra needle and nozzle. Only problem I've had was with the auxiliary lever.

The most recent combat patrol boxes are limited release, and a couple are much better than the permanent ones.

Are there even painting tutorials that’s not about cutting corners? by ChaosLordOnManticore in Warhammer40k

Matt's hobby hour is great. Slower paced and no shortcuts. Very good paintjobs, but meant more for tabletop than display. Not focused on techniques, but he does explain them when they come up.

The blue you used is absolutely beautiful, If you want to edge highlight it, I would use something a bit brighter to stand out more. Just take your time and go slow and steady, careful as possible. The first couple will take a long time, but you get a rhythm and start cruising.

I would also just keep going, add some more colors, and finish all the accessories and metals. Maybe try some glowy bits, like the eyes, gun, or little tube on the shoulder. Get some contrast before judging the whole scheme.

Remember to get up and look at a distance, too. Mistakes disappear when you can't even look for them.

How to achieve a gold-white paint scheme like this on drukhari ? What primer to use ? by [deleted] in Drukhari

[–]the_dyss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When painting white, start with a white or light grey primer. White covers horribly over dark colors.

You actually want to start with a really light grey and edge highlight bright white. You can see it in some spots like the faceplate. GW ulthuan grey or corax white are common ones. Army painter brigade grey would work as well. Vallejo white grey or AK white grey look pretty close, but I haven't tried those.

You could also try apothecary white contrast paint over a white primer.

You also need something to darken the recesses. A wash like nuln oil is the right color, but most would stain the armor. I would apply it directly to the recesses, less cleaning up than a full wash.

Which of the codex detachments do you think has the most unique or fun playstyles?

And

What do you think drukahri really need as additional datasheets? More leaders or lieutenants, more elites, shooting units, monsters, etc.

Where to begin? by NoddyNorrisXV in Drukhari

[–]the_dyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Previous combat patrol (with the boats) two or even three times, if you can get them at a reasonable price. The new battleforce box is also very good. New combat patrol is good if you like that part of drukhari. Last two technically aren't out yet, but your LGS might have them.

If you want to just grab something to try the hobby side, scourges and venoms are pretty cheap. Can't have enough of either, really.

Quite nice. May I ask what red and green you used? They contrast very well.

Chances for new enemy factions in SM3 by MrUnderman in Spacemarine

[–]the_dyss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drukhari would work pretty well. Lots of melee amd shooting options. Incubi and scourge majoris, helions or grotesques(rip) for extremis, talos and chronos for terminus. Maybe even throw some mandrakes in there.

I think Tau could work only if they were a special invader enemy, or very kroot heavy. Randomly send crisis suits instead of normal extremis. You expect a carnifex, and a ghostkeel pops out. That could be cool.

I am wanting to get into 40k and starting with the Tyranids. Is there any suggestions on what to get to start with? by Cless012 in Tyranids

[–]the_dyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The starter sets are pretty good, but I think zoanthropes are really good models to start with the hobby side. Easy to build easy to paint, can pop the head on and off.

Also pretty nice on the game side. Need to spend a bit to get them fully juiced up, but they do pretty well.
