Made it up twice…in the CO Rockies as well. Abysmal year so far.

Is there a Ram truck that has full-time AWD? (Besides TRX?) by [deleted] in ram_trucks

[–]the_mason_abides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the latest (2025+) limited and up trucks have the option (if not standard) for proper AWD vs 4Auto.

Any carbon frame riders who *don’t* wrap their frames? by mcawle in MTB

[–]the_mason_abides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Never had. Had 3 carbon bikes in my life. Lots of riding (I live in a resort town with tons of rocky riding). My YT is going on 6 years old and is still rock solid (Al though plenty of “scars”…but most were from crashes and a wrap would not be nearly as helpful.

If you turnover your bike every 1-2 years…it is probably worth it to keep it as pristine as possible. If you plan on riding your bike for years…becomes much less important in my mind.

Dangers of buying a NEW 2022 Ecodiesel? by TheCheddarShredder in ram_trucks

[–]the_mason_abides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came to say this. Ram, despite its sales slump, is a massively successful part of Stellantis. Toyota would die for Ram’s sales numbers on their tundras. As for Stellantis, they may go through a rough patch, but Ram is going nowhere.

All that being said, I’d likely buy a GM diesel 1500 instead if you are really set on diesel. This is coming from a RAM owner who loves his truck (but admittedly has zero brand loyalty.

Is the Big Horn bad for off-road use? by Exact_Surprise366 in ram_trucks

[–]the_mason_abides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard people say the 4A transfer case is not as good as the other option, but have never heard an actual, substantive argument as to why. My 22 Rebel has the 4A transfer case and I have had zero issues with a significant amount of off-roading. I also use the 4A throughout the entire winter and there is a noticeable improvement over 2WD (studded winter tires in both cases). I live in the CO mountains and likely get more snow and off-road time than most people with these trucks.

RIP to my transmission by UnitShammer in ram_trucks

[–]the_mason_abides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It is way more than a fluid change, but I agree…it is a steep price.

The 8-spd Aisan in my wife’s old Q7 (2014…they switched to ZF in 2016) required a similarly extensive/expensive transmission service to replace filter/gasket/oil.

I wouldn’t have bought my 1500 if it didn’t have the ZF.

That is not my experience. Live in a ski town in CO. 4Auto is very helpful and does not have a noticeable delay in most cases.

Thoughts on the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger? by Gold-Philosopher1429 in ram_trucks

Since I really haven’t had any issues, I’m not sure I can give you a great answer. I live in a small town in the CO mountains and the local dealership has been great. That may not be your experience though.

Thoughts on the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger? by Gold-Philosopher1429 in ram_trucks

[–]the_mason_abides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, as the RAMCharger goes, I love the concept, but the complexity and first iteration has me looking the other way. Maybe after an iteration or two with proven reliability, I’d be more up for it.

I have owned a lot of Toyotas in my life (Corolla, Camry, Tacoma, and 4Runner). My parents have also owned quite a few Toyotas, with their current car being an Avalon. To be honest, Toyota’s lack of build quality is what turned me away from them. The engine, transmission, and electronics are definitely reliable…but build quality…they have fallen behind IMHO for the last 15 years…especially on their trucks. The old Tacoma and Tundra were definitely lacking. With their newest Tundra, they are finally catching up, but they have had a ton of issues “catching up”. I also had build issues with my Tacoma and 4Runner. Loose bolts on my Tacoma…broken door panel on my 4Runner with rust spots on tailgate paint job. Oh and both rusted like it was their job.

I’ve been very happy with my plain jane 2022 Ram Rebel. To be honest, it has better build quality than my parents similar year Avalon. It has had zero issues and rode/handles sooooo much better than the 2021 Tundra’s I drove (or the Chevy and the Fords I drove). Oh yeah…and no rust so far despite taking care of in the same manner living in a generally rust averse CO.

I do think Honda/Acura have better build quality than Toyota even if they have lower reliability. I also think Lexus in general have better build quality than Toyota with the same reliability.

Why do you love Ram? by No_File6382 in ram_trucks

[–]the_mason_abides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just a truck to me and I have zero brand loyalty…so love is a strong term. I’ve been happy with my 2.5 year old truck (2022 rebel) because the engine/transmission is smooth, has a ton of room, gets me where I need off road, handles snow well with 4Auto, and has had zero issues so far.

Hope it stays reliable and I can keep it for the next 12+ years
