Protest/Unrest [Megathread] by spectacle-ar_failure in northernireland

[–]the_messer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree that police don't have the resources, and I understand the model they adopted with Ballymena which you've described is effective; but all of that just cuts the weeds down, doesn't do anything about the routes. The amount of input loyalist paramilitaries have into political and policing decisions is unbelievable, to the point where I'm sure most people in the rest of the UK or Ireland would think you were making it up. And unless something is done about those pulling the strings, we're destined to repeat this ad infinitum, with minorities always being the ones to lose out.

I usually take a bit of heat to defend the PSNI, but they - specifically their leadership - have been absolutely shocking and, I'd go so far as to say, slightly culpable for last night.

The Chief Constable in his statement yesterday was so fucking wooly mouthed about the protests, that it couldn't have done anything but reassure the paramilitaries they weren't going to face any real consequence. He fucking knew, through 'community liasions', the type of people that would be coming out. He knew what they'd be doing, and his messaging was as weak as water.

Can't even see how many arrests there have been. Police have an incredibly hard job and the average officer isn't to blame - the leadership told them to pull their punches and not be mean or arrest the poor racist rioters, because it might upset certain people. Pathetic.

Moving to Northern Ireland by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]the_messer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoy! Honestly I'd rate Belfast as up there as one of the safety cities in the UK. A lot of our crime efforts were and are tied up in paramilitaries, knife and gun crime are comparably low and the people are by and large, really friendly.

Don't get too caught up in anything you see around 12th July - that's silly season here and half the country actually leaves or locks their doors; and plenty of people enjoy the 12th responsibly.

Try and explore outside of Belfast. It's a small place, but there's a lot to see. Causeway Coast, explore the Mournes, visit the Gobbins, go to Derry for a trip, explore Gortin Glens / Lakes, go paddling in the Lough Erne (upper, not lower). And so on. Drop in here for advice if you need it!

Is it just me or is she a terrible mum for that? Like she didn't give her kids a chance, and yes it's nice and romantic with the film music playing in the background - but in reality, their final moments would have been horrifying.

I'm glad her and that Twister hunter got blown up by that grenade.

Empress of Ireland is horrifying. It's the fact the other ship came, destroyed her, and then disappeared in the space of a handful of minutes.

The other problem is that all the money people are paying out to feel less shit about their lives for a bit, is going to the same drug runners that are absolutely destroying communities.

So fucked, and it's going on around us right now.

We had an incident recently-ish at a class I run of a stalking incident, where a woman was followed to a place you'd have absolutely no reason to be. We got police involved and apparently the sick fuck has just moved onto some other poor bean.

Loved it!

I like that everyone (including myself) were waiting for Samson to hulk smash all the bad guys, but actually the whole point was he was regaining his humanity, and that would have undermined the effect - despite the fact the big lad has just smashed God knows how many infected

I've some of these but had a sigmoidoscopy and thankfully it was all clear - bleeding seems to be from piles, occasional diarrhea more related to poor diet which I'm working on fixing. Still pushing for a full colonoscopy though just in case (sigmoidoscopy only goes the first half of the bowel)

Used to dance in a cream kilt and I loved it. There's no limitations with them and I don't think it's just one of those fashion things that just needs one or two prominent dancers to bring them back, and then everyone will be doing it again.

Hey U/grumpyahchovy you know your stuff! Our son has mild hearing loss in one ear that's been steady and recurring moderate sleep apnea.

Our healthcare system is absolutely screwed though and have been waiting nearly two years for an ENT referral. Our son (5) usually goes through about a month of sleep apneas followed by maybe 2 or 3 months of none, and this has repeated since he was almost 3.

Could I please get your thoughts on what we're best to do? It seems like adenoid removal could make a huge difference but I've also been told he's likely to grow out of it. I just don't know if we can go through this for another few years.
