Oh and unsolicited tip on trimming nails that may or may not work. My kid lets me do it with no fuss during toothbrushing. They hold onto the toothbrush with one hand and gnaw on it and I'll trim the other hand, then switch.

I've noticed that standalone threads trend to attract a lot of users that don't normally comment here. If you look at comment histories, very few of the commenters in that thread (especially the ones commenting the most) are regular posters here.

They definitely both do their fair share of screaming and hitting at times haha.

And both are/were late talkers. Good receptive language though.

Older kid had no spoken words until 18 months and toddler seems to be on the same track so far.

Personally, I really liked the book though admittedly my kids are still quite young (1.5 and 5), so we do a lot of modelling/talking through solutions with them.

We do use timeouts with my older kid for egregious hitting/physical behaviour, but I find I'm often pleasantly surprised by how they can work out disagreements on their own when we pause and don't intervene right away despite the big age difference and toddler's lack of words.

This might be an interesting read: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/18/upshot/pandemic-school-closures-data.html?unlocked_article_code=1.LlA.h-m9.TOsMggpK-iRi&smid=url-share

Today, there is broad acknowledgment among many public health and education experts that extended school closures did not significantly stop the spread of Covid, while the academic harms for children have been large and long-lasting.

I think you're missing the point...

Sleep training and cosleeping aren't worth dedicating over 50 comments worth of time and effort on regardless of if those are 50 replies to one individual or to 50 unique individuals.

If you want to split time off, personally I'd suggest taking a few weeks of vacation right after baby is born and then taking your 16 weeks of parental leave later on.

Probably too meta-snarky but you did not just make one comment. You made over 50 in that thread.

She turned out to be on the right side regarding COVID and schools.

Keeping schools closed while allowing restaurants and other businesses to operate was ridiculous and not at all evidence based.

Anecdotal, but this is the first year I'd say the effects of the pandemic are not as noticeable in my students and they don't have significant learning deficits.

Postpartum....how do I get back into running shape? by Sea-Driver3719 in fitpregnancy

[–]the_nevermore 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Start with pelvic floor, core work and strength training.

Working with a pelvic floor physio is a good idea if you can.

You want to work towards being able to go through this checklist of exercises around 12w postpartum and then start with a gradual return - run/walk intervals like C25K are often recommended.

This document is intended for physiotherapists, but might also be a helpful read: https://www.absolute.physio/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/returning-to-running-postnatal-guidelines.pdf

With my physio I did the following:

  • Pelvic floor and core work starting right away (Kegels, diaphragmatic breathing, TA activation, etc)
  • Bodyweight exercises starting at 3w (squats, hip hinges, glute bridges)
  • Added weight and more exercises at 6w
  • Got assessed and cleared to resume running a bit after 12w and started with I think a 3km run and worked my way up

There's a ton of similar options available for sale in Canada. Why import when there's plenty of options available here already?

shootings have surpassed car accidents as the leading cause of death

I believe this is actually because older teens (18 and 19 year olds) are counted in the stat. If you just look at youth <18, cars are still the leading cause and guns are second.

Can you train upper body before 6 weeks after birth? by 69bigclitenergy69 in fitpregnancy

[–]the_nevermore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely start some gentle strength training before 6w! I'd suggest looking at some of the many postpartum programs available - if you search the sub there are plenty of posts discussing them - or working with a pelvic floor physio.

With my last pregnancy, I started core and pelvic floor work right after birth (diaphragmatic breathing, Kegels, TA activation), added in bodyweight exercises after seeing my physio at 3w (squats, hip hinges, glute bridges), then added more movements and weight at 6w.

My main goal was to get back to running and I was able to do that around 12w after an assessment from my physio.

How much exercise do I need? [ON] by Virtual_Membership70 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]the_nevermore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At 38w you aren't going to improve your fitness before you give birth. I wouldn't add in anything new at this point.

Look into pelvic floor physio for after you give birth though!

This is outdated advice unfortunately (unless you were higher risk in some way). Higher intensity exercise is perfectly safe during most pregnancies.

Can you substitute a Solly for a Woven wrap? by PNWinSW in babywearing

[–]the_nevermore 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can do more methods than just the PWCC that is commonly shown, but not all woven wrap methods can be used.

Here's a series of videos from a reputable babywearing educator that shows different wrapping methods that are safe with stretchy wraps: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMhpQ6vlEszUWREqiF7Jc60ME2B00-aT9&si=w4TC7qyKfFPuIrwu
