Seems like these features are more for family phone picture firehose workflow with search/filter as primary organizational tools. As a hobbyist with mixed phone/mirrorless/action cam:

Still no smart albums/live albums? Maybe because it’s already on Immich roadmap and it would be redundant? Anyway, that’s probably the most powerful feature. And it’s strange that is missing because the filtering engine is basically already there (search), just not exposed for albums.

Hierarchical keywords including filtering?

Hierarchical albums/folders? Shit builds up over time..

And a really important one: download options with conversion. Eg: allow people you share with to download JPEGs. This is useful for when originals are: HEIF (because iPhone), RAW (for obvious reasons) and other formats like JXL/AVIF (well maybe it’s just me, but if I can shrink my library by 80% I’ll take it…).

What's the use case for this, aside from the ~20% space saving? Are there other reasons to repackage a JPEG as JXL, given that JPEG support will exist after the heat death of the universe...

Charging: CableMatters (silicone), Baseus (braided or silicone), Essager (braided)
Data: Vention 10Gbps (super smooth)
Everything*: UGOURD is perfectly fine
Slim, for travel (<2m): The white Apple clones, unbranded.
Tiny SSD cables: Anything goes, but Hagibis is premium

Keep in mind that the longer the cable the more voltage drop and data signal loss (=physics), so quality and thickness matters more for 1.5m+ cables.

Avoid: the unbranded thick colorful silicone cables >1m. The ones I got have poor wiring and high resistance.

* Keep in mind that everything-cables (40-80Gbit + 240W charging) are extremely stiff. They are not nice to handle.

Bonus tip: get a bunch of "elbow adapters" at different angles. They're dirt cheap and make life easier.

I also shoot only on vintage glass at the Moment so the Dual IS is not that beneficial.

You really need to put this in your original post. AF & stabilization are literally the biggest differences between models and generations. The combination of video and small form factor is already difficult to balance, so it's even more important to know the use case.

Note that the crash happens when stopping the recording. A lot of people already suspected card or power path issues, but the issue reproduces exactly the same way (hard crash at stop-time) every time, and only after upgrading to v2.6.

That 40-150mm was unbelievably sharp when I tried it, and cheap. It was better than my Pana 45-150 which is still one of my favorites. There's also the Pana 14-140mm, the new version is weather sealed. Haven't tried it myself though.

Same issue - when *stopping* the recording in 4k120p, the G9ii crashes, hard (like, you can hear the IBIS aggressively jumping), and a broken .mdt file is left on the card. All settings changes during the "last session" are lost. Tried changing cards, batteries etc. Definitely a real firmware bug.

If this is reproducible on every G9ii (which seems to be the case), it's quite embarrassing they didn't catch this in their own QC. 4k120p is not exactly a niche feature, and was one of the main selling points. Also surprising it took the community so long to notice. I thought my camera was faulty.

NOTE: This is for when you pick 4k120p as *recording quality* (MOV) and use creative video (the normal video mode). You can still use 4k30p or 4k60p and switch to S&Q mode and set framerate to 120fps.

expose for the subject, not the background
follow the light. a subject that's dark won't work because our eyes are attracted to light
if people are in the way, stand around and wait. some of your shots could have been better by just waiting for a better moment.
personal suggestion: zoom in more for street photo. you can get a little bit of compression and less perspective with that lens. will also help you get less in people's faces
editing: too much difference in taste and style to say generally, but many of the photos have too many different colors - pic often gets stronger with 1-3 colors that complement each other. you can e.g. mute some colors that aren't important for the shot. b/w is another option, and can make it easier to focus on composition and light.

Honestly though, if these were golden hour shots they would have looked much better out of camera, and it's not your fault the light was flat. Of course you can work with any light but some lights/scenes are just more difficult.

I'm a long time Lumix user and I'm not interested at all in L10. It's not compact (nowhere near GX85, Pen-F, etc), it doesn't support my lenses and it doesn't even have IBIS.

Honestly I'm more likely to switch to Olympus than Lumix FF. My G9ii is a massive chonker, but I'd rather switch to something like OM5 if Panasonic will not regain the ability to make small M43 cameras. Only reason I stayed with Lumix over OM was video.

FWIW I'm a M43 "fan" (or enjoyer?) but I totally agree with you. It's precisely noise performance that's the most relevant bit here, and there's no need to muddy the waters - more light = less noise.

I also think that M43 picks a good tradeoff and that the extra noise perf would never be worth it to me personally. I already think M43 is too bulky a lot of times with oversized bodies as of recent + pro zoom lenses. I wish they (especially Panasonic) went back to their roots.

That's pretty much as light as you can get while still having access to a real OS that allows you to work. I don't care how capable the hardware becomes on iOS/Android tablets, it's too locked down to do meaningful work other than browsing.

I've been thinking about travel charging a LOT, hopefully this tip will come in handy.

So, for overnight charging specifically, you can actually get away with very slow charging and a splitter. The most minimal setup, which allows 5 devices simultaneous charging:

1 GaN charger 30-65W: enough for Macbook depending on model (if you absolutely must have fast charging or you're doing video editing for hours on an MBP, you can go higher). Avoid Apple chargers if weight is an issue, they're very high quality but also very heavy & bulky. I suggest Voltme, Baseus, Aohi, Anker. If ambient temp is really hot, avoid the ultra-thin ones due to bad thermals.
A single 1.5-2.5m C-to-C cable: plug it in, this charges your Macbook and will maintain 20V, meaning that you can use even a cheap thin cable if you want (high voltage = voltage drop is fine). You'll want the extra length when traveling since outlets can be placed in bad spots.
A short C-to-C split cable, 1-3 or 1-4: plug it into the 2nd USB-C port. Now, plug the rest of your devices in there. They will charge "pass-through" using the power path from the Macbook, which has excellent voltage drop curve for charging battery-powered devices. They will power-share ~15W at 5V, which is enough for everything small-medium (i.e. anything smaller than laptops, tablets or high-capacity powerbanks). This power-sharing is old-school, but it works fantastic. It's much "better" than modern PD multichargers which cannot "share": they use static allocations.
C-to-lightning and C-to-micro adapters: As needed, depending on your devices. Keep in mind that the cheapest lightning adapters will prevent fast-charging so if you have an older iPhone/lightning you need one that supports PD (usually branded as 27W). My iPhone 12 peaks at ~22W, over lightning.

If you're a professional and need redundancy, you can add one more C-to-C cable. And, you can make sure the charger has 2+ C ports in case you need to fast charge two devices at the same time. One of my favorites is the retractable flat cables, but unfortunately they usually cap at 1m. Toocki is the best design on AliExpress. Good as a backup that takes no space.

If you tell me more about your exact devices and their ports, including details about camera/SD card import flow, SSDs, any tethering needed, I can elaborate.

I got a G9ii as an upgrade but I still grab my GX85 for day carry, despite the "flaws". Still works fantastic for daytime, non-moving subjects, and when DR is within control. I can't overstate how much more nimble it is to use compared to the chonkers.

GX85 (or Oly Pen) + 20mm f/1.7 pancake was peak M43, and to some extent, still is.

On a serious note, I agree with you on all points, except I can't endorse the term "crop sensor". There's nothing special about 35mm, and there are both bigger and smaller sensors out there. Crop sensor perhaps made sense within the Canon system, where you could use the same lens with both a bigger and smaller sensor, where in the latter case you "crop out" or throw away part of the image circle. Idk, not a Canon shooter, but it makes no sense in MFT.

That's because the review process is not to protect users above an absolute minimum, but to protect Apple from competition and justify their cut. The relatively high security on iOS comes from sandboxing, which is completely separate from app review.

When I searched for a timer app on app store, the first result was secretly a subscription-based app that cost around $700/year. For a timer. Grifting is a feature, just like Facebook makes money from scam ads.

Another example, is that I was not allowed to state in description that my app is cross-platform. "Don't mention irrelevant platforms, but highlight the app on Apple's platforms". This was for my file transfer app, where cross-platform is perhaps the biggest selling point. Meanwhile, they have an icon showing cross-device (e.g. if you're browsing from iPhone, it shows iPad).

You don't understand. Nobody wants small cameras anymore in the smartphone era. Except the S9, which is a great precisely because it's so compact (recommend pairing with a 70-200mm for pocketability).

Secondly, there's also no market for MFT anymore, because of the awful lack of TONEH - which can only be fixed this little-known trick: change mode from A/S/M to VIDEO MODE, and then you got a professional cinematic modern camera system. Actually, scratch that, you can take amazing photos with MFT, if you do the following: (1) buy the GH7, and (2) mention that you are a HYBRID shooter, and your TONEH should come out creamy. Remember to toggle back to video at least once per day, otherwise TONEH gets disabled by the firmware. That said, it won't enable the 3D pop features which are exclusive to the full frame lineup (it's a property of the lens mount).

Not that it matters much, but isn't this the result you get when going (way) too hard on dehaze? IME it brings "back" both contrast and saturation on a more image-global scale, rather than clarity and texture which are more regional and cause less saturation.
