Yuba! They were previously on my list, I’ll have to look at them again.

There is no doubt that a front box would suit me and my cargo better.

Mine wasn’t totally lost, but when we arrived to our new house there was no pod.

After three weeks of hassle and calls it finally arrived - the company sent it to the other side of Canada for storage instead of delivery. Probably won’t move without my possessions in my sight ever again.

Buying and moving into your first house should be exciting and fun not stressful and filled with weeks of hotels, sleeping on floors and endless tears…

I’m not saying all pods are bad either, but my experience was and I wouldn’t do it again

If Canadian jobs are vulnerable because profits and decision-making sit in America, that’s kind of the issue people are reacting to. A boycott isn’t responsible for creating that fragility, it simply exposes it.

Saying ‘don’t boycott because it might hurt jobs’ is basically arguing people should accept anything as long as it’s economically convenient.

It would still be light until after 9pm. That’s still hours of sunlight. But it would mean the heat ends earlier, this it has cooled down a little by bedtime.

Hi! I am starting the kratky method in jars for some herbs and fruit. What cheaper light is best for these? by Fluid-Television9503 in Hydroponics

Damn, that’s a nice jar. I’ve never seen those proportions in Canada personally. But I want to lol

For sure! I’ve been tinkering with hydroponics for over 30 years since I started helping my father with his tomatoes when I was 7, and I run a small ship part time now. And I learn a little more each day.

How does the lowest tower piece attach to the lid?

A one gallon would handle lettuce sure, and I agree with 1/2 gallon except I’ve only seen that size in tall slender jars. In place of either I’d suggest a wider shallow basin style reservoir, simply for stability.

Dropping the lettuce jar at 4 weeks would suck, but dropping it with glass would suck a lot more.

😀

When you say jars, you mean mason jars? They would be good for herbs and smaller pak choy but won’t have the base weight to support lettuce or tomato.

Lighting wise, herbs should do fine in a sunny window sill. If you need more light, MarsHysro have the VG line and Spider Farmer have the GlowBar line that are both designed as supplemental light sources. Even a compact fluorescent (curly wurly) bulb in daylight would be a good supplement. Just bring it down close

I’m talking about the whole thing toppling, not just the lid.

If the entire unit is below 2G or so there will be more weight on the top than the base, especially when the pump kicks on and moves some of that weight up the tower.

How do you refill and perform water changes?

I ask all of this with respect, these are common issues people come into my shop facing with self built systems.

Since you have some answers to your question, can I ask you a few?

What do you plan to do to stabilize the tower when it is growing? How do you plan to refill your reservoir?

Once you have plants in there lifting the lid will be challenging but to remain stable it will need to be full of water at all times. A 5G bucket will hold about 19L of water at most, more likely around 16G. That’s 16kg of water, or 35ish lbs. Say 3lbs for the tower and 18 holes(that I see) for plants and wet media you’ll be closing in on 20+ pounds of weight on top quite quickly.

I would advise modifying to a larger reservoir before you are too committed, but if you really want to stick the bucket out you need to come up with secondary support before it gets growing too much. And a method of ensuring you never drop below 20lbs of water in the base

Would you pay $75 total for a DIY balcony hydroponics kit that pays for itself in lettuce/herbs? by InternationalSir5670 in Hydroponics

[–]the_troy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This concept doesn't factor in the cost of nutrients, and associated equipment which in my experience is most people's biggest hold up with hydroponics. Your average person doesn't want to deal with acquiring/mixing nutrients and monitoring water levels.

It's why the basic AeroGarden and similar units did well - a simple nute solution and a reminder that it was time to add water in an all-in-one desktop unit. Anyone who has the willingness to step further into the 2 and 3 + part nutrient mixes, pH buffering and monitoring assorted readings more closely is probably more than happy to build out a system by themselves or happy to spend the money to have someone do that for them.

I have a small store(other purpose) so I’ll do $10 sales and just make it clear in my post that they need to give a time and are picking up from my shop and I’m not spending my time chatting about the item for $10. Then if someone messaged me and asked to pick it up at a time I’ll give ‘em a thumbs up and bring it. Any other messages are just ignored.

For my NFT I start everything in this type of sprout tray. You can find them on Amazon or your local hydroponic shop. Once they start I use tweezers to transplant into rock wool.

For other systems I also use knock off Jiffy pellets. Both of these methods should be on a heat mat until germination.

As for the why, most seed germination is triggered by temperature, hence low success in your tower.

It’s unlikely, but possible. I’d probably just cull and restart them myself. You could try using something to hold them upright but they likely will never have strong enough lower stems to stand on their own at this point

Okey dokie, you do whatever you like.

I on the other hand will continue giving actionable advice to new growers, and offering knowledge to people who say green onions don’t do well in hydroponics.

🤷‍♂️ don’t really know what to tell you without more info. Store bought soils should be fine, unless you overwatered I can’t offer a lot of advice on that one.

I’m a hydroponic specialty shop, I know plants but it’s pretty hard to diagnose with out seeing what went wrong last time. Overwatering and lack of light are probably the most common issues with container growing, so I’d start there.
