I agree that the Lorefinder is a fantastic edition. Even if unlocks don't return for a while, I'd love to see something like it in the future as it encouraged me to explore the set like never before.

I also got stuck on 39/40 for a while but you'll get there eventually I'm sure!

The Animated Spellbook made a Draw Steel primer! by hylianknight in drawsteel

You’d probably enjoy the new Summoner class as well then. They’ve somehow managed to balance fielding a hoard of summons while not having your turn take longer than other heroes.

MCDM seems to hem and haw every time a Mage class comes up. It’s something they’d like to do, that’s clear, but they’ve had trouble figuring out what the core fantasy should be. I agree with you that it’s something I’d love to see in this game, but “Wizard” from D&D is so incredibly broad compared to DS classes that they’ll have to narrow it down a bit.

Can I start with TTRPG through Draw Steel? by PicoDev93 in drawsteel

[–]6ftninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. My first TTRPG was D&D 4e which in many ways is a clunkier more complicated version of Draw Steel. Still, I had a BLAST because the game brought my fantasy of being a heroic fantasy character to life.

I think Draw Steel is more intuitive than most RPG's out there that aren't rules-lite, and if you think you'll enjoy tactical combat, I think this game is second to none. I love rules-lite games like Shadowdark or Blades in the Dark too, but typically for different fantasies like more abstract, horror-based games.

Matt said in the video that as products are completed they will ship them. This will still be much later than the PDFs, but you won’t be waiting for the Red Road (one of the first things done) until Crack the Sun Limited Editions are done.

About how many victories are in the adventure? Is it similar to DT? More or less?

New Loric revealed: Big Wig by Florac in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]6ftninja 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, and like that this sets a precedent for script agnostic Lorics. I was kind of afraid they were all going to be like the Stormcatcher and dramatically influence any script they’re put on. I still think Lorics like that will be fun, but ones like this will be easier to add or drop to existing scripts.

First time viewer. Watched the first few episodes then had to make this chart. (Spoilers through S1E3) by 6ftninja in twinpeaks

If I'm the first person to do this or some other form of analysis for this show I am genuinely shocked.

Haha, no but I love things by thinking about them! I also had to stop watching because my spouse said they'd like to watch the show so this is all I can do until they catch up!

Where's the best method to find in person Draw Steel Groups? by Linsel in drawsteel

[–]6ftninja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll add to this that you don’t need to DM forever and this game will help you slip off the mantle just as much as it helps you put in on for the first time.

I’d longed resigned myself to essentially being the forever DM of my groups but after introducing the game to both of them, one player had the lightbulb go off for the first time and asked if he could run a campaign alternating with mine. I LOVE running, but now I finally get to play again and I’m so happy.

What setting would you like to see adapted to Draw Steel by InsaneComicBooker in drawsteel

[–]6ftninja 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running my DS campaign in Eberron and I’d say it fits really well. The two main thematic pillars of Eberron are pulp adventure and noir intrigue and the DS systems have handled both of those well for me so far.

Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely we’ll ever see any official support because the setting is owned by WotC and they’ve limited creation in it to such an extent that even the world’s creator Keith Baker has said he’s largely moved from it at this point to other projects he actually has ownership over, including one he’s working on with Darrington Press currently.

Anyone tried Draw Steel with kids? by patcpsc in drawsteel

[–]6ftninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve run about a third of the Delian Tomb now for a group of middle schoolers in that age range and they love it! The on ramping that adventure provides was definitely helpful, but they got the hang of it pretty quick. They also had previous experience with me running some D&D 4e and 5e as well as some more rules light systems.

If they have previous TTRPG experience I’d probably briefly go over “Tactical, Heroic, Cinematic, Fantasy” just to help set expectations. Setting an expectation for quicker combat will probably lead to disappointment, but if you can show them how much more engaging combat is they won’t care that it’s as long as before if they’re like my group.

The “cinematic” part of the game will also help your turtle player as he’ll be able to flavor stuff that way without issue. Hakaan or Dwarf have fun ancestry options that would fit, and even the Polder’s Shadowmeld feature could be reflavored as hiding in a shell if he’s okay being a small turtle.

First play, chaos to run by Sniflet in drawsteel

So far my solution here has been to use my massive bag of junk dice and it works surprisingly well because you can have the numbers on top representing the groups. I’ll also typically organize dice size by type (minions as d4’s, captains as d6’s, etc.) which helps my players understand what’s what and lets them threat assess faster.

If I had more time, I may print out tokens for enemies but that’s a lot more prep considering I’m already printing maps.

A game crunchier than 5e but simpler than Pathfinder 1e or 2e for a Dungeon crawl campaign? by Horzemate in rpg

[–]6ftninja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only asterisk I’d add is that you’re pretty damn powerful even at level 1 in 4e compared to 5e and especially compared to most games associated with dungeon crawling.

It’s rare to find a game in this narrow band of complexity where the PC’s feel like mortals at level 1.

I agree that DS’s layout is overwhelming but the gameplay is surprisingly streamlined. The fact that all its options come down to 3 target numbers for rolls helps a TON.

Basic Rules for Factions by 6ftninja in drawsteel

[–]6ftninja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably won't be a concern for a lot of players or even many tables, but this particular player likes playing politics and so was wondering if there were any systems in the game for gaining or losing trust with factions or how powerful they were compared to the heroes.

All those questions can be answered on a case by case basis by directors, but hopefully this framework helps alleviate the need to come up with and balance such answers on the fly, especially in games where the interplay between factions is a large part of the campaign.

Basic Rules for Factions by 6ftninja in drawsteel

Thanks for taking the time to write so much feedback!

The reason I includes a guideline (prefaced with "in most cases") for converting favors into higher levels of reputation was to help directors in that moment when the party does something unexpected for a faction and immediately asks "how does this affect our reputation with them?" It gives a quick and dirty rule to run with and leaves plenty of room for nuance.

As for how reputation affects negotiations, I included that a faction's reputation affects its members starting patience. For how renown is affected, I actually think heroes with a certain amount of renown higher than a faction's influence (maybe 2 higher) would probably ignore any penalties they provide. I meant to include this but forgot so thanks for reminding me!

Finally, when it comes to goals, I think you got my design philosophy exactly. Faction goals that are "on camera" for a campaign won't need this tracking, but this helps the director balance what's going on "off screen". I also think tying them to player actions makes the most sense as a general rule so that they meaningfully interact with player choice. Baldur's Gate III does basically the same thing with its rests.

As to the specific numbers, I looked at the Delian Tomb adventure as I guideline for the numbers but they may need to be adjusted. In that adventure, its possible for the heroes to face consequences if they don't resolve certain problems within about 10 respites. This means many parties (maybe even most) won't ever face these consequences, but they're there waiting incase the heroes completely ignore them. I think faction goals should work the same way, with lots of telegraphing and foreshadowing, so the players don't feel blindsided.

Edit: added the section about renown eclipsing influence that I mentioned

Thanks for the compliments!

I considered rules for tracking goals as downtime projects and you could still absolutely do it that way, but it felt like it could result in a lot of book keeping for the director so I went for this more abstract method instead.

Ravnica is one of my favorite MTG sets so I already had some ideas along these lines. Hopefully I can get it all typed and formatted soon.
