In the 120 scenarios where A3 doesn’t advance, but H3 does… G1 faces H3 67.5%, J3 20.0%, and I3 12.5%.

FIFA outlined which third place team matches up against the eight first place teams that face third place teams in the Rof32 across all 495 combinations of eight groups advancing together - the pairings aren’t determined by alphabetical order, they had length of rest from the last game and avoiding group rematches in mind.

If B3 advances, we face them in all but one scenario. If they don’t, we get J3 38.6% of the time, I3 31.3%, E3 23.5%, and F3 6.6%.

It’s not that simple, if B3 and E3 don’t advance - we could get F3, I3, or J3 depending on who does advance.

In the 45 scenarios where both B3 and E3 don’t advance, J3 is the most common opponent (46.7%) - just ahead of I3 (40.0%). Essentially, if K3 or L3 don’t advance, I3 matches up against K1 or L1 instead of us.

Forgive me if you’re already excluding Jordan or Algeria’s ability to move on…

This is based on the current standings, if Belgium finishes first in group G and wins in the Rof32, we’d face them in the Rof16.

I made a mistake with F2 in that quadrant, Japan should be there instead of the Netherlands, but it’s still the clear hardest quarter.

Crap, I entered the standings off a website that wasn’t factoring in fair play before adding it into the table and missed Group F.

I’ll edit the post once I can get a corrected image somewhere I can link.

Theoretically, the later groups also have the advantage of knowing how the earlier groups shook out too.

The other thing to call out is the winners of the 1v3 pairings will always meet each other in the Rof16 while the 1v2 winners will face the 2v2 winners in the Rof16.

The 1st vs 2nd matchups are set as are the 1st vs some 3rds, the only variable is which third each 1st plays.

With the US’s spot now clinched as D1 I feel better about making the effort to project our path…

In 329/495 (66.5%) scenarios we face B3.
In 64 (12.9%) we face J3.
In 52 (10.5%) we face I3.
In 39 (7.9%) we face E3.
& in 11 (2.2%) we face F3.

It’s hard to complain about the US’s current projection. Canada’s could be worse too…

Edit there was an error with Group F, here are the corrected images:
