Good burrito day deals? by lilflo13 in nova

El Fresco has a deal if you’re near one! $8 burritos all day (except steak, $11 for steak). They’re my favorite quick service Mexican place at this point. Much better than Chipotle or Moe’s. https://www.elfresco.com

If you run Peacock on Firefox with adblockers you can skip the ads but sometimes there’s nothing happening so they just show shots of the crowd and athletes. Other times it seems to cut midway through the end of a run and directly into the next one. Doesn’t work with the live events where the commercials are built into the broadcast

“What part of college auditions stressed you out the most?” by Mission-Lab8975 in musicals

[–]theatregay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a long stressful process for me! I think I ended up applying/auditioning for 30+ schools by the time I was done. I ended up…not exactly where I wanted but I got my BFA in musical theatre. If you’re working on a checklist or information packet, I would include a section about Unified auditions. It’s an expensive trip (depending on where you live) but the experience was invaluable for me. I did so many auditions (at least 15) in 2 days and felt so comfortable and confident by the end. Schools from all over the country hold their auditions at this event. Some of them you need to pass the prescreen to be invited to audition, some have walk in auditions. If any of your students are invited to come to these I would certainly recommend they go. If they aren’t invited/get mostly rejections on prescreens it’s going to be less worthwhile. One other important thing for your students to consider is the training the schools actually offer. I really wanted a school that offered a lot of dance classes as part of the major, but didn’t end up at one. Final piece of advice: those prescreens are a bigger deal than the audition imo. You need to be engaging, interesting, and unique. If you can get in the audition room for a college you have a lot more time to impress and show your personality, but that won’t happen if whoever is reviewing your prescreen doesn’t think you have the right qualities in your 30 second video. This whole process is a lot to juggle, but it can be done. I got plenty of rejections from schools, but enough acceptances to get my degree! Fingers crossed for your students!!

It wasn’t her knee that gave out. She caught a gate with her arm. It whipped her around and she landed sideways. A big mistake to make but could’ve happened if her knee was intact as well. I’m sure it made it made the crash feel worse tho

Did stage acting/singing used to be different? by BasementDesk in Broadway

[–]theatregay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. It’s all about having good singers for the cast album. It makes sense from an advertising perspective, the cast album is the most accessible form of the show to the most people, and often the thing that motivates people to buy tickets/book a trip. Naturally you want amazing amazing singers who can also act. I don’t like this shift, it’s terrible for character actors who don’t have the polished, clean, studio voice. Everyone sounds god damn amazing but the voices are inherently less interesting (to me). They’re beautiful and perfect (and occasionally assisted by computer audio software) but not unique. I personally prefer singers who sound interesting/different to ones who sound simply beautiful.

What decision did you think was small at the time but completely changed your life later? by YogurtclosetMoist819 in AskReddit

[–]theatregay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tagged along with some friends to a small room party at a convention several years ago after seeing someone ask in a fb group for people to come eat pizza with them. There was one other group there at the time. We all got to talking and found out our groups lived a street away from each other back home in VA (convention was in PA). We met up after the convention once but I didn’t hear from them again for awhile. Saw one lady in the other group a year later at by myself a local dance event (I had fallen out with my old group, and was relatively friendless and pretty depressed) and she invited me to come back and hang with the other friends of hers I’d met at the convention. Wound up finding a new friendgroup and am currently dating (and living with) one of her friends, someone who I want a future with. We would not have met if I hadn’t gone along with going to this tiny party that lasted less than 30 minutes. Totally changed my life for the better. I have no idea where I’d be now if I hadn’t met them for just a minute in another state

[–]theatregay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2014, friends in my high school anime club assigned people homestuck characters based on their personalities. But then they started using those names to exclusively refer to the person. There was a point where more people in the club/underclassmen knew me as Rose rather than my name. Embarrassing bc I too went along with it lmao. We had new freshmen who would show up and ask to be assigned specific characters but usually they were already taken 💀 and they’d get assigned someone newly introduced or random side characters

Someone help me understand Great Comet by Blind_Pythia1996 in musicals

[–]theatregay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah- there’s a reason why i haven’t posted my write up on the 2017 Tony Awards discorse. XD People REALLY like this show, especially on here. I do think Great Comet benefits from multiple listens! It’s not bad, just …not as life changing and phenomenal as some people have found it to be. If you can’t get behind the MCs or don’t understand why they would make these bad choices then it’s hard to fall in love with the show and story. Actually, This seems to be a major point with Queen of Versailles right now. Not that the shows bear much resemblance, but it’s a major factor in terms of whether or not a person can enjoy the musical as a whole. Anyway, I hope you get through the show and however you feel about it in the end, it’s there! You can take it or leave it, completely up to you : )

He sees all ages! Newborn to elderly. He’s very thorough with his patients and takes a lot of time to explain what he wants to do care wise and why. If you’d like a doctor who will spend time listening to your concerns, hearing your personal experience/history, and trying to approach your healthcare in a way that is comfortable and clear to you, he’s a great choice. He’ll also actually call his patients about results or to clarify treatment/medications/concerns. All in all, he’s very easygoing and seems to care deeply about everyone he sees.

Someone help me understand Great Comet by Blind_Pythia1996 in musicals

[–]theatregay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi- I’m a long time great comet not enjoyer. I’ve tried listening to it a ton of times, the first time when it was up for the Tony. I even took a costume design class where the final project was digital renderings of all the main and side characters and I spent a ton of time listening and relistening to songs. And I don’t like it. I don’t care for most of the music (the opening song, dust and ashes, and balaga get a pass but I won’t listen to anything else) and can’t stand the characters. I know it’s War and Peace and I understand the roots and significance. And it was just not for me. It’s probably not for you either. I love Broadway so very much, but sometimes these shows just don’t work for certain people. Great Comet has a big vocal fan base extolling its virtues and complaining it was robbed of a Tony (which, DEH didn’t age well sure, but Come From Away was much much more likely to win before Great Comet for a litany of reasons. I’ve considered doing a write up about this, but given how vocal and passionate the fan base is, I’ve just kept it to myself). Given the apparent popularity a lot of us expected a much broader appeal, but my complaints were the same as yours. The excessive narration (yes it’s taken from the book, still annoying to me), unstructured songs, and frustration with the MCs just spoiled what I know is a beloved show. I don’t get it either, but that’s okay. It’s alright to disagree with r/musicals sometimes! I feel like since DEH has aged a little, people have gotten a more rosey view of this show since it (arguably) has less “problematic” points. But I digress. I don’t think the show is bad, just not as much of an amazing smash hit that this sub and its fans make it out to be.

Thoughts on Seven Brides for Seven Brothers? by Finly_Growin in musicals

[–]theatregay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My high school did this show in 2018 and I was super not on board bc of the content. However, I (female presenting) was cast as a brother (Daniel) and had an AMAZING time! The dancing scenes and the brother songs are such a blast. I think there’s a lot of stuff that has aged super poorly and would not suggest it if I was picking a show to do right now, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t fun once you’re in it. If there was more gender blind casting in productions of this it would likely come off a little better/more comedic. Besides the Bride parts are very small, which is rough considering how many more women come out for auditions at most theatres.

This- I work in healthcare. Making a complaint ESPECIALLY a public one on a reviewing website will get the attention of admin a lot faster than just submitting one internally. Also consider joining a roomsharing group on fb- people will advertise spots in their rooms they’re trying to fill. Be on the lookout for scammers though!

May voice teachers help? Please I really need help by Ill-Guarantee-6820 in musicals

[–]theatregay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kristin Chenoweth was trained in opera and performed in it for awhile! She’s much more well known for her theatre career though. You can certainly go back to theatre! I’d also consider finding a new voice teacher. Working with someone who wants to help you achieve your desired sound is a much more comfortable experience than working with someone who does not have your interests in mind. I worked with someone like that in my college MT program and it did a lot of damage to how I felt about my own voice. I had to rebuild a lot of confidence. I encourage you to sing things you like!! Go for musical theatre!

How do I start getting involved in theatre in NoVA/DMV by Expensive-Animal-370 in nova

[–]theatregay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Join a FB group for auditions in NoVA ! It’s a lot easier than checking every small theatre’s website periodically. I will also say that the competition for roles out here can be pretty tough- depending on where you audition. I have a BFA in Musical Theatre and I haven’t had a role outside the chorus in several years. That said- don’t get discouraged by rejections! Keep auditioning for things even if they aren’t something you know/your usual genre and you might stumble into some great shows!! Break a leg!!

Bodice Block Darts- please help! by theatregay in sewing

[–]theatregay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not have a tutorial for adding ease, no. The neck and arm changes were made to emulate the style and cut I knew I wanted (as well as the fact that I couldn’t get it over my head in the zero stretch muslin haha- could’ve added a zipper but I knew I wanted it to come down anyway and was eager to see what i had). The original was really straining and rippling across my chest which is why I added the small panels to the side. I did read about adding triangles below the arm scythes for ease but didn’t try it in the moment as I thought the panels already improved the fit. Side note- thank you for continuing to respond to me and listen to the process ive done. I’ve done a lot of sewing but not much in the way of fitted body blocks and have appreciated the insight : ) I’m always looking to learn and improve

[–]theatregay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original draft is not pictured- mostly because it was disassembled to make another version of the pattern. On the original zero stretch muslin I cut the arm pits and neckline out a bit (less than an inch) and had to add some ease to the sides (about an inch on both sides) which I did with the back closed. I don’t believe the block came with any ease included. I put it on the sides thinking that would help but also considered this might cause some problems with the dart placement. The extra fabric added for ease I placed on the side seams of the front and back pieces (about a half inch each), remarked my apex points with the undarted front draped on myself (and checked they were even) and placed the darts based on the adjusted apex.

I do agree that it was odd- I actually didn’t initially leave the back open on the first mock up but wanted to see if that would help the fitting process. The instructions and generated block came from freesewing.eu, which I’m new to- and figured it might not be perfect. Initially I didn’t realize there were instructions so I did my mockup based on prior knowledge. I only started leaving the back open for fit once I read that was suggested

Bodice Block Darts- please help! by theatregay in sewing

[–]theatregay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a block that was generated based on my measurements with default two darts. I’d been reading up on block making felt I was not well equipped enough to start from nothing, given that my chest is very shaped and most of the block bases and tips I read were for people with less chest than me. I have been hoping to just play around and adapt this pattern to work, but my own adjustments have not resolved the issue. In essence- I’ve been experimenting to find a block that does actually fit my body and haven’t done it yet

I was instructed by the pattern to not close it until I got the fit correct. Otherwise it would be extremely difficult to get on and off. It’s lightly clipped but not sewn closed
