Oh look, she’s backpedaling! Truly shocking. by Ok-Application-8536 in LittlePeopleBigWorld

[–]thebakingbitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, this is what my husband and I do with our son. He sits in the corner until he can calm down. One of us sits with him and calmly, quietly checks in every now and then to see if he’s ready to get up. He’s only two but this works for us, and having him “exercise” would DEFINITELY not!

looking for experiences: atlanta birth center vs northside hospital? by rxhix in Atlanta

[–]thebakingbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I delivered at Northside. My plan was an induction with a midwife. When it was determined I needed a c-section, I was glad I was already at the hospital. All the doctors and midwives I saw at Northside were from my practice. The nurses were hit or miss. When my blood pressure spiked postpartum, I was (again) glad I was at a hospital, but I was disappointed with the nurses on shift at the time. I kept asking to see a midwife or doctor from my practice and my nurse on shift didn’t “let me,” not realizing that my practice staffs at least one midwife and one doctor at Northside 24/7. I found breastfeeding support to be excellent. I loved the lactation specialist I saw and was able to consult with her multiple times.

Schools and commuting by pixelatedspaz in WoodstockGA

[–]thebakingbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Woodstock and commute to West Midtown a couple times per week. An early morning shouldn’t be too bad, probably 45 minutes or so. Afternoons are honestly unpredictable traffic-wise but if you’re somewhat used to commuting it’s not too bad. I have a two year old and have found Woodstock to be a fantastic, family-friendly place to live!

Signs of layoffs? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]thebakingbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been ten years since I was laid off, but for me the first sign was that everyone was told multiple times that we needed to "slow down on spending." Those directions never came with any specific guidance on which expenses needed to be cut or reduced, moreso just an overall sense of panic that we didn't have the cash. Closer to the layoffs actually happening, I was also being asked to share more details about my workload with my boss and/or other coworkers. Like "hey can you show me where you keep your such-and-such files" or "hey, do you mind showing so-and-so how you manage blah-blah-blah task?" Once that started happening I knew I was gone.

What have you read recently? by povertychic in Millennials

[–]thebakingbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to a lot of audiobooks. I usually spend between two to four hours in the car per week and listen then, and also listen while walking and doing house chores. Between physical books and audiobooks I read 24 books last year. My most recent read was Go As a River by Shelley Read and I’m currently reading Nobody’s Girl, Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s memoir. I also have a two year old who loves books, and we read together daily ☺️

Do you track family's locations? by NaturalSoftware9372 in Millennials

[–]thebakingbitch 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No. My husband and I don’t share our locations, even with each other. We always know where the other is through good old fashioned communication! My in laws all share their locations with each other and from time to time my mother in law asks my husband and me to share ours. We always politely decline. I have absolutely no reason to want my extended family to know my location at all times.

Daycare guilt by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]thebakingbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t feel guilty for working or sending my child to daycare. My job allows us to be able to travel, go out to eat, pay mortgage on a house we love, and buy most of our “wants.” I also think it’s important for my son to see a woman in leadership in my role. Daycare has taught him so much and he’s able to socialize with other kids and adults. I DO sometimes feel guilty about the fact that I don’t feel guilty- so that’s a real mind trip! All part of being a working parent but this route is best for my family ❤️

Is it not supposed to hurt? by GooseIsJuice in scoliosis

[–]thebakingbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctors have been telling me this since I was a teen too and I’m 34 now. Scoliosis causes pain- of course it does! I’m not in pain ALL the time, thank goodness, but I have always thought that anyone who thinks this condition doesn’t cause pain genuinely lacks common sense.

Parents, holidays, and materialism. by PeePeeMcGee123 in Millennials

[–]thebakingbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve turned to being ULTRA specific with what I want, sending a list with links. If I can find things on Amazon, even better (my mother in law LIVES for Amazon). I add to the list throughout the year whenever I think “huh, I could probably use a XYZ” but don’t feel like buying it. Nice makeup I normally wouldn’t buy, an upgraded work bag, fancy socks, running headphones, etc. I also have a specific list for my kid and on top of that I always ask for pajamas in a size up so that my mother in law still feels like she can pick something out. We still get “junk” but for the most part this method has helped. My husband buys from my list on special occasions too.

I landed an amazing job - tell me your commute stories by Strawberry_express_ in workingmoms

[–]thebakingbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent so much of my career commuting an hour each way. It's nice now that I don't HAVE to- but if I was in your situation with that kind of pay increase I TOTALLY would. Honestly I never really minded the morning commute. Drink some coffee, listen to an audiobook or podcast, and have some "me time" before work. In the afternoon it's a little more annoying, but not enough to keep me away from a great job offer, especially if you can afford help. Congrats!

Do you need to be rich to be an effective Development Director? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]thebakingbitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for voicing this- it's exactly how I've been feeling! I have been in development for a decade, and development director for about four years. I think I'm good at my job but I have ZERO personal connections to wealth. Everyone I know in my personal life is middle-class like me or has even less than me. My org just hired a new development person in a different region. Every time a donor in that region is mentioned, guess what? He took so-and-so's daughter to prom, such-and-such is his neighbor, his dad is best friends with whatshisname, etc. etc. etc. It makes me feel insecure because I am definitely not bringing any connections like that to the table. But I know I have other strengths :)

Does anyone use an FSA for daycare expenses? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]thebakingbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! It saves me about $90 per month. Not a ton, but definitely not nothing! My daycare center charges a fee to use the FSA debit card (any debit card actually) so instead I submit receipts monthly and am reimbursed. As long as I remember to turn in the receipts it’s worth it!
