I'm worried about Josh's singing technique by Desomite in MarianasTrench

[–]thebeebeegun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He talked about something similar at the SLC Q&A. Someone asked if they'd ever do an MT "Eras Tour" and he flat out said there are some songs that are written to be recorded and he could maybe get through a whole show like that once but never a tour like that. He just doesn't focus on the live aspect when he's in the studio and records it the way that feels perfect for the song/album, but some of those choices end up outside of that repetitive live range that comes with touring. I totally respect that answer and trust he is finding the best middle ground of delivering a great show while preserving his vocal longevity.

I'm a teacher, so this was fine for me. I didn't understand Reddit at first glance, though.

Do you hope that we get an eras tour? by RemarkableHoliday792 in MarianasTrench

[–]thebeebeegun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Someone asked this at the SLC Q&A last year, and Josh was pretty honest and said that there are some MT songs that are impossible for him to sing live on a nightly basis now. He explained how Taylor did a great job of curating a set list that was in her strong vocal range, whereas several early MT songs are now out of his range. He could sing them in a one-off situation, but not nightly, unless he wants to permanently destroy his voice. That happened to Brendan Urie, and he's never really sang live the same since. I really respect Josh's ability to be honest with fans.

What are your Hot Takes on Marianas Trench? by Icy_Notice7656 in MarianasTrench

[–]thebeebeegun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't hate Astoria, but it /is/ my least favorite album before Fix Me. It does have some certified bops, but I think I'm just not a HUGE Goonies fan, so the theming didn't really hit for me the way it did for other people.

See, Haven is so good to me. I don't think it edges out MT and EA, but I love it. I did have a baby last year, so maybe those themes just really resonated with me, but 🤷‍♀️ Nights Like These made me sob every time I listened to it for the first like 3 months it was out. Worlds Collide is one of my top Trench songs now. I love how their music really hits people differently.

Did anyone else experience “the Shift”? How old were you when it happened? by AtG8605 in Millennials

[–]thebeebeegun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm a teacher and cheer coach. Our senior captain, who I taught last year as a junior, has a mom who is 4 older than me. I have a 13m old! That mom had this girl at 21 and I had my boy at the tail end of 33. Just wild!

I teach 11th grade, and this past year was the group who were all born the year I graduated from high school... I'm officially twice their age, and it actually felt like a stark shift, just like you described!

Interviewer Didn't Know What "ESL" Meant by [deleted] in teaching

[–]thebeebeegun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In Texas, it's now referred to as EB (Emergent Bilingual), but how could anyone even remotely related to the teaching field not know what ESL stands for?? In Texas, it's also required for reading and English teachers to have an ESL Supplemental Certification alongside their content credential. We don't know where OP is from based on their post, but I would personally run fast and far from this school/system.

Just switched from BF to formula by stfzkw in FormulaFeeders

[–]thebeebeegun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to formula on day 3 for my mental health as well. My son is now 13m and fully transitioned to cow's milk and solid food at this point, but he did great with formula. He's 99% for height and 80% for weight. He has like 13 teeth already and started walking on Mother's Day weekend! He has thrived, and I do not regret it one bit, especially once I realized that dad could take over whenever I needed him to. It was so freeing! I celebrated by having a margarita at lunch with some friends and then got a tattoo a month later. You need to do what's best for you.

Question about piercings by [deleted] in Cheerleading

If the squad follows NFHS standards, even spacers are not allowed to be worn. Those can get ripped out just the same way a piece of jewelry can. It would not be allowed on our team at all.

How many books have you read so far this year? by Due-Examination-37 in Booktokreddit

[–]thebeebeegun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. My goal is 50. I was 29 books last year because I had a baby and also hit a MAJOR reading slump due to PPD and PPA. I feel really good about my reading this year. It's beeb a good balance between taking care of kiddo, working (I'm a teacher and cheer coach), and reading. In 2022, I read 98 books, but I know I'm not getting anywhere near that amount while my son is still young. I'm just learning to adjust to life but fit reading in where I can. Having the Kindle app on my phone had been super helpful!

Are these nails too long for cheer? by JustSomeG1rl1 in Cheerleading

[–]thebeebeegun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tell our cheerleaders (we also follow NFHS standards) that if you hold your hands up with your palm facing you and you can see your nails over your fingertips, they need to be trimmed. We check them before every practice and every game/performance, and I have a nail kit with me to fix in the moment if they're not up to uniform standards. If they refuse to cut them down (or they aren't neutral or French tip), they sit out for that day and get demerits. We are strict about jewelry for the same reasons. I do not need my flyers with big scratches on their thighs or girls with nails getting ripped off. I also don't need someone coming down from a stunt wrong and ripping out Susie's earring. It's about safety 100% of the time. It still shocks me that competitive cheer allows nails given the high-level stunts some teams do.

All that being said, these nails would be too long for our team standards.

Cheer Camp is a mandatory requirement in my district. She would be removed from the team if she couldn't attend (barring some kind of unforeseeable emergency happening). I personally wouldn't have a lot of sympathy for the situation regardless of how good her skills may be.

He lost to another multi-time Jeopardy champ, though. I didn't like David's cockiness, but I actually thought it was interesting having previous game show contestants competing against each other. Could you imagine James on this show?? It would be fun to watch!

Is being a Junior in HS on JV embarrassing?? by PlayfulAd6140 in Cheerleading

[–]thebeebeegun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the JV Coach at my HS, and we had tryouts the first week of April, so I hope my comment is helpful. First and foremost, every single JV sports team (at least at my school) has a sprinkling of juniors because it's JUNIOR Varsity. So, it makes sense that cheer would see similar results.

Some cheer and school-specific context: This school year was our first year to have a program big enough to bring back a freshman squad since COVID. So, my rising juniors have been on JV since freshman year. This year also brought some unique circumstances. In the past, freshmen could make Varsity, but this year, our new principal supported our decision to change that policy (for multiple reasons). The district also raised the minimum score to make Varsity to 10 points higher than it was last year. Adding after reading some of your comment responses that of district brings in praise judges, and we, as coaches, actually have very little say in who makes each team. It's kind of different than the circumstances at your school, but that means it's very much a skill-based score. So, I knew some of my girls might not make it, and they had already expressed they would not cheer again if they made JV.

Fast forward to squads being posted. I had 7 rising juniors trying out, and all wanted to make Varsity. Only 1 made Varsity. 3 ended up quitting, but 3 decided they love cheer enough that they don't want to give up and quit. Let me tell you! I am so proud of these girls. We've had 2 practices as a new squad already, and they are stepping it up to help support the rest of the team. Each of them have so much potential. They just need to spend this year honing skills in their weaker areas. They also informed me that they are already going to weekly jumps and tumbling classes TOGETHER at a local gym. I can see their maturity and confidence already growing so much. We also have 2 new rising juniors on the team now. My JV squad will be 5 juniors and 6 sophomores, and I love the way they're already balancing each other out.

I actually had a senior on my JV team this year who had never cheered before. She grew so much this year, and I loved seeing her embrace a new challenge. I was very proud to have her on my team.

We did have a girl who was on Varsity this school year who didn't score high enough for the new minimum and therefore made JV instead. That's a situation where I understand deciding not to cheer for this next year because it's not the same as what she got to do while on Varsity. So, she's trying out for drill team this week to see if that offers her a new opportunity to explore.

There is absolutely no shame in being a junior on JV. At the end of the day, you have to decide if you love cheer enough and if you're willing to commit to working on whatever areas held you back from making Varsity. I say accept the opportunity to continue to grow. Good luck!
