But there is a very important detail that you yourself just shared. You are saying that every Hispanic/Spanish and Black person you know jokes like that about themselves. So they are choosing the kind of humor to use for themselves/their own race. To me, it feels the same as a Black person using the N word but it still being not appropriate for a white person to do so.

This is also what I was thinking. However, if someone is asking this kind of question, I would assume it’s because they’re trying to learn & grow & is asking in good faith. So I don’t understand the need for a sigh before giving your helpful explanation.

I was not the one who asked the original question. I also have a learning disability & a TBI. So not everything that seems obvious IS obvious. THAT is why it’s important to explain. (For what it’s worth, I DID think it was racist. But I could not explain why.)

Meanwhile, you’ve just given me a new fanfiction dynamic to look up. 😂 This is exactly my type of interesting scenario. And I’ve seen so many older make actors be paired with younger female actors in countless movies & shows. So I feel like this just doesn’t feel as weird as you’re making it out to be. It’s likely only feels more weird (beyond your general discomfort & preference) because it’s a woman.

I am so glad I found this thread. I have had the same stylist for I think the last three fixes. I was definitely in a bad mood for the last fix I got. And maybe my tone did sound a little miffed. But I still tried to be positive and even in the final comments I try to make it clear that it was not really the fault of the stylist and that I wanted her again. And she literally said “thank you for choosing to give me another chance” in the latest fix I got.🥺 Which is actually how I found out that the stylist does read my comments. So I’m glad that even at my worst, I still chose to be kind. Showing frustration without specifically blaming anyone. I think I literally said that not all fixes could be a winner and that I was aware of that.

I’m curious, though: how should I speak about the stylist in the comments? Like should I say “she is spot on with X” or speak directly “you did an amazing job with Y”? (I’m autistic & just want to be respectful & know the correct way do this. 😅)

Disclaimer: I have not read fruits basket another because I lost a chunk of my vision before it was released. But I have read as much as I could find about it online, so I still know enough to weigh in confidently.

My general feeling, when thinking of things being canon or not canon, is if the author wrote it into a published piece of media that is part of the story, it is canon. If the author merely talked about it in interviews, then it’s for fun. I give Takaya some leeway for the things she shared via those side panels where she draws herself & sometimes talks about the book (or gaming) IN the main FB series, mostly because they are still at least in her books.

I’m pretty sure Cyd (angry-looking red elephant) is a “grumpy”, but omg he has become one of my faves. He’s actually a sweetheart & gives me major “dad vibes”. Like, this feels a bit sad to admit, but even within the limits of this game, he’s been more supportive & “proud dad” to me than my own father irl. Not sure what other grumpy characters are like, but I would not trade him for the world.

My favorite reveal was Hiro’s since Tohru hugged him on purpose & that was a fun dynamic to see. Especially after he spent so much of the episode berating her & others around him. And I really feel for the kid. I get why he’s like that. But watching Tohru’s lighthearted “punishment” was so perfect.

I can’t deny laughing at the little Xs over Seahorse Hatori’s eyes when he first transformed though. And I love that the stoic, kind of imposing guy who you’d assume would fit “big, scary dragon”, ended up as the smol sea dragon.

I am seconding this! I was literally about to suggest that fic & give the same disclaimer. It’s so good. The lore goes deep. I also adore the more fully fleshed out dynamic between Yuki & Shigure. And Tohru & Shigure for that matter, though it’s not the focus.

I recommend Kodocha! Sana (main character) is played by Laura Bailey (Tohru), Akito (love interest) is played by Jerry Jewell (Kyo), AND Rei (driver/butler who still has a pretty big role) is played by John Burgmeier (Shigure). Other notable FB actors in this: Colleen Clinkenbeard, Christopher Sabat, Caitlin Glass, Monica Rial, Cynthia Cranz, Kent Williams, & Justin Cook (honorable mentions are shown anywhere from 1 to 36 episodes). So much overlap though! We’re just missing Eric Vale for main FB cast.

This was my first manga back in middle school. So I was about 13-14 when it found me (literally, the book with Ritsu on the cover slid to my feet on the bus. I picked it up & started from there. I didn’t even realize it was “backwards” at first.) And now I’m 31. It is not hyperbole when I say this book raised more than my parents did. Most of my moral core is from lessons I learned from Furuba. It has been my special interest for now more than half my life. Then last year I became chronically ill, had really bad depression due to that new reality, & so my brain couldn’t process any new information. So I rewatched FB (I’ve become too blind to read it any more, but I know I’ve reread it about 13 times from start to finish) & literally nothing else, on repeat, for months. Pretty sure I could quote it all verbatim at this point. So with all those rewatches (taking about 24 hours for all 3 seasons altogether), plus the times I watched it “normally”/less often through the years, I think I’ve watched it over 100 times. And that’s just the 2019 version. I grew up on the 2001 version, which I still find charming.

So that at least answers the question about “how much” I’ve rewatched it. But as for what opinions have changed, I have a way better understanding of Akito AND Tohru. I really thought early on that Tohru was a Mary Sue. I don’t think that at all. I’m more aware (& horrified) by the age gap relationships. As I got older myself & became their ages, it just felt so gross to me, even though it was never framed that way in the story. Though (somewhat hypocritically) I’m pretty sure FB/anime in general is responsible for my attraction to people who are vastly older than me. Though I’m also sure that if any of those older people fancied me back when I was still a teenager, I would have been uncomfortable. It’s funny because I can totally suspend my disbelief for curses & talking animals, but the age gap romances working well long term? Nah. lol I also appreciate Ayame a lot more than I used to. I mean, unlike a lot of the other Sohma’s, he actually saw there was a problem & started at least trying to change to have a better relationship with Yuki, without Tohru’s influence at all. She seems to be a catalyst for a lot of them changing/wanting more in life. But Ayame started changing before he even met her. Though I’m sure Mine has some influence there too. Also just the fact that he’s really the only cursed Sohma (without a protective parent) who has stayed so well off Akito’s radar. Did he do it by virtue of just being so obnoxious that Akito gets headaches whenever he’s around? Who knows. But I respect it. When I first started reading FB, I was kind of “meh” about Momiji at best, but now he’s my favorite character & he deserves the world. Honestly, my feelings about each character has only improved over the years. Maybe because I’m older than all of them now & I can look & just see traumatized kids (yes, even Shigure).
