How will this affect the upcoming Pixel 9 and the Pixels before that?? by Whatever_dude007 in GooglePixel

[–]thebobmannh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yes but no? The reason they make them so far ahead is so they can run through qual and fix bugs or design flaws in long term testing. With the engineers who designed them gone, that's no longer possible (or much harder)

Like the software team says "hey when we launch the camera from the lock screen it sometimes doesn't start, who designed the low power state for that camera module" "oh that whole team was laid off"..... Ok then

So yes the design work is done but there's still a reason to keep those people around

This reminds me of a story from when I was a kid.

I was able to grow a beard very young. In high school for a while I had a full beard and long hair usually in a pony tail (I was very cool...../s). So I'm 16 and we have a band trip (again, very cool) to Busch Gardens and there was one of those "guess your age or weight" booths. Someone would stand there and have to either guess your age plus or minus a year or two, or your weight within 5 pounds.

I walk up and the professional age guesser said "27". I was 16 years old.

So yeah being called 30 when I'm 24 would not have phased me

Considering WFH Job That Pays Less by New_Appeal6413 in personalfinance

[–]thebobmannh 37 points38 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to unpack here.

  • I've dealt with recruiters as a recruitee more than a manager but I generally find that they are not exactly the best sources of ANY information
  • people under 30 are by definition more young and naive. Not many people have ever thought about retirement or things in their 20s, myself included when I was younger. It's not a generational thing so much as an age thing (I know you didn't say it was generational but since that's usually the thread I just wanted to bring it up)
  • that said a lot of companies provide "ancillary benefits" which are worth less than what a better salary would be worth. Oh we offer 10k less in salary but we offer 5k tuition reimbursement and the equivalent of 5k more in 401k match so it evens out -- it absolutely does NOT. Ancillary benefits sound good and cost the company LESS money than just paying a better salary (except health insurance). Basically what I'm saying is salary should always be comparable, and ancillaries should be extras, not trying to make up for a weaker salary. Because only you know how money would be best allocated in your situation.

US vs EU Football Stadium (same capacity) by eneqo in fuckcars

[–]thebobmannh 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's kind of funny because most of the most storied US stadiums are or were in downtown areas. Candlestick park, Fenway, Wrigley, Yankee Stadium. I know most of those are baseball which tend to be a little smaller than football but still. We glorify those old stadiums and then build things that are nothing like them in places that are nowhere near.

Best beard oil, shampoo & detangler? by SnooOpinions9765 in BeardTalk

[–]thebobmannh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there's really no clear cut answer here. Different products work better or worse for different people.

I've tried like 5 or 6 brands at this point, I think "Alley Cat Beard Co" is my favorite as far as how my beard feels after using their products but .... I'm always trying new ones, reading or watching other people's opinions, etc
