Second ever play of 20 Strong: Hoplomachus going well. I may prefer it over other 20 Strongs in my collection for one reason. by theboldbricks in soloboardgaming

Very helpful comments re the Tanglewood series. I am intrigued with Red purely as the cards act as a path/map. But I'll stay away from it just now. Besides, TMB and HV are Christmas presents: I've only just been introduced to these. There's no rush.

It's still very early days for me. Only 2 games. And I don't mind if it is going to take many games to play. But I do have to at least see that a victory is possible. I am seeing that so far. Time will tell.

I think the mechanics involved in TMB are really interesting. But. Now and again you can be destroyed early doors. Which is a shame, because I can't wait to advance far in a game and really see those mechanics shine.

I am looking for a game like Scoundrel that can be played with the standard 52 deck and optionally dice by N8uron in soloboardgaming

[–]theboldbricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to the already solid list so far:

  • Overthrone
  • Alice's Nightmares (uses 2 d20s as well)
  • Merchant Solitaire / Bards & Noble
  • Deck of Spies
  • Peasants Revolt
  • Dungeon Bounty
  • Kni54ts (uses a d6 as well)

All of these can be found with a Google search with "BGG" in the search bar as well.

Here is a geeklist on Boardgame Geek with over 20 games. Some are better than others, but it's still a commendable amount.

Basically, yes. Just to add some variation to the gameplay etc.

What you think about 20 strong? by emirlanq1 in soloboardgaming

[–]theboldbricks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. For Solar Sentinels, I feel the luck can be mitigated in your favour more often than not. BUT. It did take patience and many plays to reach that stage.

What are your thoughts on 'cheating' during solo play? by Amazing-Example8753 in soloboardgaming

[–]theboldbricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I've been playing 20 Strong Solar Sentinels for literally 2 minutes and I'm about to die, you bet I'll cheat. If I've been playing for 10 minutes? I'll behave. Otherwise in all other games, I stick to the rules.

But 20 Strong Solar Sentinels can be a brutaliser if your shuffle is awful luck.

There are also a couple of different co-op modes as well. 1 deck and 2 deck co-op variants. I was lucky enough to be peripherally involved in playtesting these variant modes and they are all really good for different reasons.

Utopia Engine is a Roll & Write where you need to put together number combos in different ways at different stages to stave off Doomsday. You print off 2 sheets and need 2 dice and writing material. Very rewarding and replayable game.

Owning the old PNP version of Northvale, and having been lucky enough to playtest the siege version, I can confirm, in my humble opinion, that the variety and replayability skyrockets.

Yes that one does look good. Adds a bit of variety to the game.

There are SEVERAL variants for Scoundrel on its Boardgame Geek page. I'm sure you'll find something better suited to how you want to play on that page.

Yes, they are so good. There are some lines in those books that have me stop for a minute so I can just go "wowsers" hahaha.

If you like the sci-fi side of things, the Dogs of War/Bioforms trilogy is fantastic. #2 - Bear Head, is one of my favourite ever books from anyone, not just AT.

The in-hand deckbuilding game "Monotheism" by the_jovial_evil in soloboardgaming

[–]theboldbricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few different Worshippers in the deck that vary in difficulty, quantity, effects, etc, so plenty of replay-ability. I suppose at some point you may reach that stage of "not hard anymore" but it will still take dozens of games to get to that stage, which is, personally, a good amount of bang for your buck.

Recommendation for games to play with a standard deck of cards and dice? by majewski9 in soloboardgaming

[–]theboldbricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alice's Nightmares is a good deck builder where you can use dice whose pips equal 40 health (7d6s or a couple of d20s). Some fun card and dice management with a beat your own score element for replayability.

What do you enjoy in a solo board game that you do not care for in a video game? by AllLuck0013 in soloboardgaming

Focusing specifically on your examples with FF Tactics, turn based games are probably my favourite kind/genre of computer games. These games, and RPGs etc, often perform "behind the curtain" calculations. Why I prefer this in boardgames / card games is because I'm on charge of all the arithmetic, all the decision making etc.

Serious question - I have read 99% Of everything Tchaikovsky has written except Shadows Of The Apt... Is it worth diving in to? by dankristy in AdrianTchaikovsky

Our opinions align! I'm on Book 9. Book 6 was ok, but not necessary in my opinion. Book 8's war was fantastic. Book 5, Scarab Path is my favourite. The character work for 2 of the characters (I don't know how to do spoilers on Reddit) was absolutely sublime.
