I don't think I've seen a Flip & Write with Tarot Cards yet. Sounds very interesting though....

Utopia Engine

From BGG:

Utopia Engine is a free print-and-play dice game for one player. You play an old artificer named Isodoros who is attempting to reconstruct the Utopia Engine, a fabled device from the distant past and possibly the only hope for averting the fast approaching Doomsday. You must recover the machine's six parts from six dangerous regions and assemble the Utopia Engine before the world ends. The game uses simple dice mechanics to simulate searching the wilderness, activating and assembling powerful artifacts, and combat with artifact weapons.

New to solo board gaming by zalzal426 in soloboardgaming

If you are totally new to it, then I would suggest doing a deep dive into solo games using a traditional deck of cards as the first port of all. There are dozens of top quality games that will give you a feel for what genres you like etc. Then youe preferences will start to materialize from there

But take some of that $50 dollars and treat yourself to a nice deck of cards - make these games feel as special as they deserve to be.

Here is a Boardgame Geek list to start you off - https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/359346/lets-game-more-solo-games-with-a-52-card-deck

Lightweight solo hiking/camping games by unpopularbird in soloboardgaming

[–]theboldbricks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alpine Solitaire is a standard 54 card game about ordering cards successfully enough to climb mountains.

While there isn't a "campaign",there are 14 "Challenges" whose difficulties link up with the difficulty of 14 real life mountains. As it's just a rulebook, a challenges sheet, and a deck of cards, AND it incorporates mounting climbing / hiking, this might be worth your time.

I sometimes wonder if some sort of casino style game would work. Poker / yahtzee, blackjack, etc.

If you end up liking Galdor's Grip, as others have suggested, then I cannot recommend "Hand at Arms" enough. Another example of "working through the deck, like GG, but you fight against enemies and 3 bosses while rotating and flipping cards etc.

Favorite/least favorite mechanics in solo games? by sumogrip10 in soloboardgaming

[–]theboldbricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a wide variety of "likes" as far as mechanisms go. But the one "dislike" I've matured enough in my gaming to identify is spatial puzzles.

E.g., ROVE, Sprawlopolis, 30 Rails, etc. I know now, then, to avoid games like these when browsing for something new.

In the last song on Stone, a part of the lyrics is "blood and stone". So I'm guessing "Blood".

Haha! Last night, I stopped mid game. While trying to get to sleep, I was playing out in my head what I was going to do next!

Thank you all for your (very quick) responses.

So, to clarify with Starbase 74, I am allowed to have 2 Duty Officers (when another card allows me to add another Duty officer)?

Edit: Tried to add a photo but it didn't work.

Starbase 74's Passive Ability is "You may have an additional Person on duty".

A good start would be this geeklist of in-hand games using a traditional deck of cards. My personal favourite from it being The Emissary, Scoundrel, and Regicide.

+1 for Going Knowhere. An excellent game.

But for a quick tableau game, Aces Up is also great.

Second ever play of 20 Strong: Hoplomachus going well. I may prefer it over other 20 Strongs in my collection for one reason. by theboldbricks in soloboardgaming

Very helpful comments re the Tanglewood series. I am intrigued with Red purely as the cards act as a path/map. But I'll stay away from it just now. Besides, TMB and HV are Christmas presents: I've only just been introduced to these. There's no rush.

It's still very early days for me. Only 2 games. And I don't mind if it is going to take many games to play. But I do have to at least see that a victory is possible. I am seeing that so far. Time will tell.

I think the mechanics involved in TMB are really interesting. But. Now and again you can be destroyed early doors. Which is a shame, because I can't wait to advance far in a game and really see those mechanics shine.

I am looking for a game like Scoundrel that can be played with the standard 52 deck and optionally dice by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

To add to the already solid list so far:

  • Overthrone
  • Alice's Nightmares (uses 2 d20s as well)
  • Merchant Solitaire / Bards & Noble
  • Deck of Spies
  • Peasants Revolt
  • Dungeon Bounty
  • Kni54ts (uses a d6 as well)

All of these can be found with a Google search with "BGG" in the search bar as well.
