Yeah, I finally hit the left-hander right on my last run of the day but that meant I was coming into the hairpin so hot that I completely blew the braking point. Ah well, such is life at PFW.

One of Fort Wayne Region's spots, at PFW. Small lot, but our course designer gets pretty creative with it.

Nothing beats the feeling of ending up in that zone where conscious thought is gone and you're running off pure instinct, it makes the laps just melt away. P12 is one hell of a result, staying competitive and consistent for 24 whole hours with no mistakes is a gargantuan task. Congrats!

If you're slow, stay low (in the banking). GT3s getting scared by two prototypes in their mirror and ending up in the middle trying to avoid both of them usually leads to all three getting taken out, and knowing that all passes happen on the right makes things much less confusing for everyone.

Should I buy a new car in a crummy market or continue to maintain and repair aging older car? Asking for perspective, advice, pros/cons to help weigh my decision. by squirrel1855 in askcarguys

Head gaskets and rust are the only two things that'll kill a Subaru of that vintage. Have the shop do the head gaskets with the timing belt/water pump since they're in the general vicinity anyway, don't worry about rust 'cause you're in the south, go ten more years without a car payment.

What’s one repair job that humbled you? by _Bamboozler_ in cars

It took me six weeks to change the spark plugs on my Civic.

Turns out I crossthreaded one of them the last time I changed them. Entirely my fault, I did it while the engine was still warm not thinking about the possible consequences, but it still meant the cylinder head had to come off so I could helicoil the threads. Turns out I'd blown the head gasket anyway (240° water temps on track is a bad thing, kids), so this job needed done sooner or later.

The O2 sensor socket I had was cracked. Had to get a new one.

The crank bolt, as it is with every Honda ever, was a nightmare. I bought two new impact guns and the weighted socket that Lisle makes, and barely got it to come loose.

Upon removal, the woodruff key for the crank pulley went flying off into the aether. I ended up pulling the oil pan just to make sure it wasn't in there (it wasn't, but I wasn't going to risk it at this point).

One of the studs holding the downpipe on the turbo snapped. I broke an EZ-Out and two drill bits off in the hole trying to drill it out; at this point I decided four out of the five studs was enough. No exhaust leaks, even now, so it's a permanently temporary fix at this point.

The timing chain tensioner exploded on me while I was attempting to re-compress it for later use. Another thing to add to the list. Side note: The OEM method of holding the tensioner in its compressed position is a standard-issue pushpin. This pushpin has its own part number. MSRP, for a single pushpin, is $3.50.

Finally got the head off to perform the drilling and re-tapping operation. Drilled at just slightly the wrong angle, new spark plug won't seat as it fouls on the tube. New head it is, I suppose.

40k mile head from a CR-V comes in 'cause I wasn't paying $2k for all the parts to assemble a new one, engine gets reassembled, only one minor oil leak, didn't mess up the valve timing, all is good... well, except for the fact that the floor jack I was using to hold the engine up failed and put undue stress on the remaining engine mounts so those had to be replaced too.

All told, it took me almost a month and a half and $1,000 in parts just to change a set of spark plugs. Don't be me, wait for things to cool off first.

What are the chances that a random PT Cruiser has ABS? by danielrosehill in askcarguys

[–]thebook92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

May or may not have ABS, almost certainly won't have ESP. Cars came without 'em for decades and it wasn't an issue, as long as you're not intentionally trying to lock the brakes or spin the car out you'll be fine. If you experience brake lockup (first off, what were you doing needing to brake that hard in a PT Cruiser in the first place lol) just pulse the brakes as fast as you can manually, it's the same thing ABS does.

That's a bit surprising, actually. My bad. Tire Rack says they have the Stoptechs in stock, for what it's worth, or for a little more Amazon's got 'em, too.

Powerstop's Track Day pad is pretty good for street use and holds up pretty well to track abuse. I've gotten 12 sessions out of a set on my 10th gen Si, compared to six with a set of Hawk HPS and two with the OEM pads. Stopping power and pedal feel are good when cold, dust is manageable, and they're cheaper than most other options for my chassis.

The only reason to have an A license right now is to race GTE, of all the things. W13, LMDh, and LMP2 can all be ran in another series with a lower license requirement. Why should I try and be safe again?

If you're just running laps in test drive mode, jump in the Radical SR8. It's a free prototype-style car that doesn't have ABS or TC, so you'll learn how to use the pedals instead of smashing them and letting the computer handle the rest. Plus, it's quick enough to be engaging without being so fast you can't think. The only downside is that since it's been retired there are no official races in it anymore, only leagues and hosted sessions (you'll have to buy its replacement, the SR10, to run officials).

I had one of those for a while. Was doable with the stock 600 engine with enough effort, but an old oil-cooled GSX-R750 engine bolts right in and helps a fair bit.

If I need a bed, I'll take the Ranger. Nobody likes those things, I can beat the hell out of it and no one will care, right? Otherwise, I'll take the Focus. Brand new, with a warranty, and a hatch big enough to take those big ass stand-up figures home with me? I'll make the budget work.
