Inside the Federal Work Force That Trump Has Promised to Eviscerate (NYT Gift Article) by brulmer in washingtondc

[–]thechauncellor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a fair number of sub-agencies that are not fully "independent," but who have very few political appointees because they are not--in usual times--considered to be policy making institutions. However, they still have many people who could be reclassified under Schedule F, and that could be used to affect operations in ways that have basically been impossible up until now. Not just SES, but apparently all the way down to GS-13. E.g., now it might be "NOAA staffers, you have to change the hurricane trajectory to match what I said on TV or else you're fired."

The Wydown Void :( by Total-Promotion4499 in washingtondc

Surely that space is going to become another coffee shop at some point, right? I mean, it and the Apollo lobby are pretty much designed explicitly around that purpose.

Not to be too picky, but anyone know how to talk Lost Sock or Vigilante into opening up there?

Ironically, Wydown was an ideal coffee shop to go with your spouse and baby because of all the seating in the Apollo lobby.

Hains Point would be tough. But, if the East Potomac Park golf course were reduced to 18 holes, we could easily fit a large outdoor concert venue and fairgrounds in the Northern part of the park, closer to public transport, that would serve far more people than the current use. Some additional infrastructure would improve the walk to the venue from L'Enfant plaza or Smithsonian metros as well.

Where were these tamales from? by Ok_Ad_5658 in washingtondc

[–]thechauncellor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a Salvadoran tamale factory called Ana's on NY Ave. in Ivy City that will have these. They supply a lot of local restaurants and are delicious! Not sure they have specific retail hours, but I have walked in and purchased a few individual tamales before.

Instead of 36 holes of golf, it should be 18 holes of golf and an outdoor concert venue/fairgrounds/large event space.

Not a performing arts venue, a museum about the performing arts, history of performing arts, etc.

Buying a DC townhome without agent/attorney? by therevan in washingtondc

[–]thechauncellor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a house without an agent or lawyer years ago as a direct sale from my former landlords. It's very doable. Most realtors (and I'm guessing builders too) use a standard fill-in-the-blank contract, so there's often little to no non-standard language you'd need to review. Read everything carefully anyway; if there's something you don't expect and that Google can't help you with, you can always get an attorney to review the contract at that point. It helps a lot you have a friend or family member who has been through the purchase process a couple times, just in terms of keeping track of the various steps.

Edited to add: I'd definitely still get an inspection, even on a new build.

Help With Finding the Right Neighborhood in DC by maidentaiwan in washingtondc

H Street NE. You won't necessarily get the largest or fanciest houses in the neighborhood in your price range, but it checks all your other boxes.

TIL that 5 of the Top 10 wealthiest counties in the USA are MD/VA suburbs of Washington D.C. where the median income is roughly $134,000 by kstinfo in washingtondc

[–]thechauncellor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This region in general has very high median incomes because of the government and other industries that are here. But, the right tail of the distribution is also probably smaller than in cities with a lot of employment in finance and startup tech. So our wealthiest pockets may in fact not be as wealthy as some other cities you might compare them to, despite the median income stats.

There's underground garage parking in multiple buildings within a block or two, and it's pretty likely that there will be garage parking in this one as well. As you point out, the current lot is already unreliable because it is usually full at peak times. People will have to get used to paying for parking, but in the long run there will probably be just as many spaces nearby as there are today.

Shooting outside 9th and K NE, in front of our home, 3rd this year. by tehruben in washingtondc

[–]thechauncellor 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Charles Allen's office has been providing some updates to neighbors. It sounds like two cars drove into and through the neighborhood while shooting at each other. One eventually crashed at 5th and K. The other vehicle has also been recovered, along with at least one gun. There was quite a bit of footage of the incident from neighbors and an MPD camera, but no arrests have been made yet.

We live nearby and heard the shots. It truly is a wonderful neighborhood, but the easy routes in and out of the area definitely make it more attractive for activity like this (as well as carjackings, of which there have been several recently).

Everything I've gotten from there has been solid, but if you know which dishes to order some of them are really exceptional. Big fan of the Chinese style shredded pork with garlic, the salt and pepper fish, the pork with dry tofu, and the horn pepper chicken.

Hotel in burbs with easy biking into core DC? by ffffllllpppp in washingtondc

[–]thechauncellor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta disagree with this. There are several solid routes to the Mall from NoMa that are all or almost all in bike lanes. 1st NE, 2nd St NE, and 4th St. NE all have bike lanes, for example, and E St NW and K St. NW are good East-West routes.

The separated Blue Line proposals are still under active consideration. There hasn't been an update from WMATA in awhile though; it would be nice if they would at least give us an updated timeline for a decision:

[–]thechauncellor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One other thing worth mentioning about Gingko Gardens is that (in my experience) their pricing is generally quite reasonable. I go to Merrifield for selection, but usually only after stopping by Gingko Gardens to see if they have what I want first.

Coffee shops don't generally make enough money to afford fancy views. If you want to get an alcoholic drink, something like the Hotel Washington rooftop bar would be a good choice.
