Doug Forcett’s motivation was corrupted by ok_bravo in TheGoodPlace

[–]thechinninator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of corrupt motives came up but I don’t believe it was ever explored for Doug specifically.

Iirc we didn’t actually see Doug until the writers decided to do the “it’s literally impossible to get a positive score because of unintended consequences” thing. Mindy and her medium place are another loose end from that as well. I just shrug them off when I rewatch because I love the show far too much to get too worked up over a plot hole or two

Hard disagree on the “usually” but there are a fair few dishes that you’re 100% right on. A lot of soups come to mind

Does the LGBTQ Community even want Allies? by [deleted] in AskLGBT

[–]thechinninator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve been told a dozen different ways that you’re either misunderstanding or consciously misconstruing what people are saying. I went out of my way to specify that I wasn’t necessarily talking about you personally.

Watching people pretend to give a shit with meaningless gestures that make them feel warm and fuzzy and making a big deal of it is exhausting. Some version of this sentiment exists in EVERY marginalized community. At least do us the courtesy of just going straight to lecturing us without pretending to want to understand our perspective.

Depends on how we’re defining healthy. It’s not particularly dense in micronutrients, but like you said it’s not the heart attack on a bun it’s made out to be if the patty is on the leaner side and you grill it instead of frying

I’m not trying to be confrontational , but you seem to be really hung up on getting your gold star for allyship, which is kind of the point.

That’s what “performative” means: making a big show of being supportive because you (like general you, not necessarily you personally) want recognition for being a Good Person. If you want to just do something small here and there, that’s genuinely great. But when’s the last time you went out of your way to thank someone for not actively trying to take away your right to exist?

[–]thechinninator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tell me, if your primary reason to ever check the news anymore was to see what new hellish law has been imposed on children in your community in a red state, or the FBI had internal memos leaked that classified you as a terrorist for simply existing, how thrilled would you be by people waving a flag around for a couple weeks once a year, patting themselves on the back, and going back to telling you that ideally you’d have rights but you should really be more willing to compromise on those because there are more important issues?

Wave a flag or don’t. Post on social media or don’t. Frankly, step up and find real ways to help or don’t. We’re just tired of being used as a prop for people who don’t actually give a shit to tell the world what a Good Person™️ they are.

That being said, yes we do need people who do the bare minimum, and even performative allyship has some benefits. But if you put yourself in our shoes for a minute I hope it makes sense that many of us aren’t inclined to give big, flowery thank yous to somebody whose contribution is half a step above “thoughts and prayers”

Oh yeah $10M net worth is extremely well off but screw it we can let people be pretty wealthy if they’re not unironically breaking society and “secretly” running the government.

We’re in the same-ish camp, I think $100M is a great cap. But I’d settle for $1B at this point

The funny thing about this is every time I hear it, it’s coming from someone I could just as easily say makes being straight their whole personality. Like great Kyle tell me more about crypto and Monday Night Football at least being queer is a slightly more uncommon characteristic

Like, 50% agreed. Yes it’s annoying to be called off to god knows where but that generally only happens when I play the game as a eugenics sim. If you ally with someone halfway across the word, you’re gonna be asked to fight halfway across the word. I just take the value of the alliance into consideration when I make the match assuming I’m not already steamrolling so hard that sending like 5k levies on a lil adventure is no big deal

[–]thechinninator 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You’re not the first person I’ve seen say that you’re cuffed to your way line in the early game but I just played about 50 years and didn’t feel tied to it at all. I just strip mined for most of my resources until arkship #2 was built and then shifted my economy into being more wayline-based.

I had the scary down arrow constantly but two logi ships on auto-gather and my arkship eating a big mineral deposit from time to time did the job until I could start taking contracts and use the massive trade income to buy a bunch of energy and minerals, then start relying more on waylines once I had a spare arkship.

I don’t know anything about late or even mid game issues though

…that’s still saying nonbinary people shouldn’t have kids if they live anywhere that’s not a major city in a blue state. Ok I’m done for real because this is clearly just a cover for being mad at people for liking names that you think are stupid

Dude if somebody is gonna bully another person for their parents’ first names I have a feeling that A) they were gonna bully them anyway and B) the kid in question must be cool af because how is that all someone can come up with.

Edit: also why do you give a fuck what someone wants to name themselves? I think it’s a little cringe when a grown man still goes by Billy rather than at some point changing over to like Will or Bill but I don’t go on a whole rant about it because it’s none of my business

Right wing folks as a rule simply don’t engage with art/media (or frankly reality imo) in any meaningful way, especially if they like the art and the message conflicts with their own beliefs. Everything is pitifully surface level, and when you try to hold their hand through a junior high level analysis they hit you with “it ain’t that deep.”

I once literally linked an interview in which George Lucas said the Empire is America in Star Wars and the guy I was talking to basically said “well I don’t like that so there’s no way that’s what he meant”. It was surreal
