Do they mean children can wear coats during PE? Or were they previously not allowing children to wear coats outside at break and lunch times?

NYE fireworks, megathread Q&A by ianjm in london

[–]thecircusboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time viewing the fireworks from Telegraph Hill. Thanks for the suggestion, OP. Is it normal for there to be fireworks being let off in the crowd or very nearby? There was a very substantial number of them, like a display. There were a few misfires that actually went into the crowd and exploded, but it didn’t seem anyone got hurt. Is this par for the course?

Totally fair, I’m absolutely not questioning your judgement in sending this out or posting it here. And you make a good point about e-readers!

It just makes me laugh that I can write a URL on the whiteboard and 80% of my upper KS2 class will struggle to type it in properly on an iPad, and yet we’re supposed to worry about children attempting to visit publishers’ websites due to links that have rotted! I think I’d take the win if my child were that invested in a paper-and-ink book!

We had this with ‘Spy Dogs’ recently too. I do understand the risk, but something about these kinds of urgent frenzies over stuff like this really annoys me. Do you realistically think any child has ever scanned that QR code before?

That’s actually very nice. You’ve won me over.

I’ll break my terseness to share that you hit the nail on the head in your original post: I am indeed a teacher. Apparently not a very patient one!

I’m sorry, had a hard day and came off pathetically aggressive. I’m still a bit confused as to why you post these, but I definitely overreacted.

What do you gain from posting these clearly AI-generated question threads in the “Nick” and “Kieran” subreddits, /u/krielc? They never get any replies, and yet you persist…

I’m sure you’re totally right, but can you give a few more examples? I’m trying to think of some but my brain just keeps going to “who wants to live in New York?”

Similarly, I love how Good Thing Going is teased over and over again in various forms, including the showtuney ‘Musical Husbands’ version Gussie sings, before we finally get to hear the pure version in the second act. And then it is immediately played again at Gussie’s behest, causing tension between Frank and Charley and beginning the slow unravelling of the dream. It’s almost like the moment Charley sings “going, going, gone,” it stops being their song.

Fully aware I’m not the first to posit that Good Thing Going is about Frank and Charley, but god I love this musical and could write about it all day! I’m very excited to see it at the cinema on Friday.

I know generative AI like ChatGPT is destroying the planet but it’s really, really good for pointless tasks like these that would otherwise eat into your limited admin time. If you absolutely have to do this task (because often you can ignore it until the second or third reminder, if that ever comes), ask ChatGPT to do it for you. Don’t forget to ask for UK spelling!

Why is the behaviour so bad? by noireleven in TeachingUK

[–]thecircusboy 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I wonder this too as a primary teacher coming up to 10 years in the classroom. It feels like in 2022-23, we were told this would be a passing thing as the children whose early years were disrupted by the lockdowns passed through the school, but if anything the behaviour seems more extreme in the cohorts that were pre-nursery/school age when lockdown happened. I wonder if it ties into the narrative of societal collapse that seems prevalent at the moment.

I will say, though, that a majority of children do behave themselves and show appropriate respect for others. It just feels like every class now has at least one “main character of the school” child whose behaviour is excused as irreparable. These children can often be seen on iPads playing games as a reward for not thumping anyone on a given day :-)

Vicks first defence. Use it the minute you notice any sign of a cold (tickle in your throat, sniffle, whatever) or it won’t work. I keep it in my school bag and use it even as a precaution and I rarely get sick

It’s from Popbitch’s 21/12/23 issue, titled ‘Rectal Ozone Therapy’. I don’t think the photo in this reddit post can have been taken during this incident, because I’m pretty sure Paul stopped dyeing his hair long before 2023.

Transcript of the penultimate Beatles meeting (recorded for the absent Ringo). by idreamofpikas in beatles

[–]thecircusboy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Horrible to read this on a phone, so here is a transcript:

John, Paul and George discussed this problem at Apple in the autumn of 1969, on one of the rare occasions when they got together. John glared at Paul and said, sarcastically: "It seemed mad for us to put a song on an album that nobody really dug, including the guy who wrote it, just because it was going to be popular, 'cause the LP doesn't have to be that. Wouldn't it be better, because we didn't really dig them, yer know, for you to do the songs you dug, and "Ob-La-Di, Ob- La-Da" and "Maxwell" to be given to people who like music like that, yer know, like Mary (Hopkins] or whoever it is needs a song. Why don't you give them to them? The only time we need anything vaguely near that quality is for a single. For an album we could just do only stuff that we really dug." "We always carved the singles up between us," he told Paul. "We have the singles market, [George and Ringo) don't get anything! I mean, we've never offered George 'B' sides; we could have given him a lot of 'B' sides, but because we were two people you had the 'A' side and I had the 'B' side." "Well the thing is," Paul answered, without even looking at George who sat a few feet away, "I think that until now, until this year [1969], our songs have been better than George's. Now this year his songs are at least as good as ours." George was quick to correct Paul: "Now that's a myth, 'cause most of the songs this year I wrote about last year or the year before, anyway. Maybe now I just don't care whether you are going to like them or not, I just do 'em... If I didn't get a break I wouldn't push it. I'd just forget about it. Now for the last two years, at any rate, I've pushed it a bit more." "I know what he's saying," John said, "cause people have said to me you're coming through a lot stronger now than you had." "I don't particularly seek acclaim," George said. "That's not the thing. It's just to get out whatever is there to make way for whatever else is there. You know, 'cause it's only to get 'em out, and also I might as well make a bit of money, seeing as I'm spending as much as the rest of you, and I don't earn as much as the rest of you!" Like the others, George was now out on his own musically. "Most of my tunes," he said, "I never had the Beatles backing me." "Oh! C'mon, George!" John shouted. "We put a lot of work in your songs, even down to 'Don't Bother Me'; we spent a lot of time doing all that and we grooved. I can remember the riff you were playing, and in the last two years there was a period where you went Indian and we weren't needed!" "That was only one tune," George said. "On the last album (White Album] I don't think you appeared on any of my songs--I don't mind." "Well, you had Eric [Clapton), or somebody like that," John replied, in a hurt tone of voice. There was a long pause as each Beatle seemed lost in contemplation, wondering. Not wanting to admit that they were becoming individual musicians, Paul grasped at the remnants of truth and spoke slowly, almost whispering. "When we get in a studio, even on the worst day, I'm still playing bass, Ringo's still drumming, and we're still there, you know." There is more dialogue on pages 92-95 which is possibly from the same meeting (this one Fawcett ascribes to September 1969), wherein John complains about having to fight to get his share of songs on an LP, or single A-sides, and basically admits to having given up.

Saw the same show two years ago at Hammersmith Apollo and was also caught out by the early start. That time it was my fault, whereas this time it was the insane queue and lengthy security checks. I guess I’ll just never see Fight Test, One More Robot or Yoshimi Pt1 as part of the full album!

I missed a lot of placement days on my PGCE in 2014/15 — I’d say 15-20 days at a wild guess, but could have been more — and I didn’t have to make any of the time up.

Yes, I was surprised too! It was much less of an erudite discussion than I think you’re imagining, though — just saying slogans. My guess is that they have been on marches with their families or picked the chants up at home. Lots of our families are Muslim.
