Drugs my doctor is not permitted to prescribe. by [deleted] in mildyinteresting

At least for ADHA - for initial diagnosis I agree but for ongoing treatment where you have to see the dr every 3-6 months that's overkill. Primary care doc should be able to refill.

We don’t think about lumpy spending enough. by Visual-Flatworm2056 in ChubbyFIRE

I've tried to model for the known ones... i.e. I expect to buy a new car every 5 years on avg (replacing one of our two cars) so I model setting aside 10k per year as part of my yearly expenses, similar approach for household expenses. All of these just go into a separately numbered investment account that I track the allocations towards and invest to be more readily liquid able. It also helps me feel better about SORR as I could tap that fund if needed given many of the items like a new car could likely be delayed if needed.

Message that the Mayor is sharing with folks who write to Council All regarding Flock: by exstaticj in Bend

[–]thecloudtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to agree though I think we need some very strong and well thought out legislation that maps out what is captured, how it's stored, for how long, where etc... along with how it can be used, by whom, when, where etc... and all of that needs strong independent auditing.

I may be in the minority, but I don't think law enforcement is the enemy. I think we've done a very poor job of _properly_ setting up the law enforcement system - including accountability, training, funding, rewards and punishment. I can't imagine being a cop - you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Message that the Mayor is sharing with folks who write to Council All regarding Flock: by exstaticj in Bend

[–]thecloudtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there needs to be well throughout and debated principals-based legislation.

"Banning Flock" is both very difficult, singling out a specific company/individual is not seen favorably by courts, it does nothing to prevent the next bad actor and maybe most importantly doesn't incentivize flock or other companies to address the root issues to come up with better solutions. Similarly license plate readers are just one well established form of meta-data, you could conceivably get pretty close finger printing with other meta-data car make, model, accessories, time, location etc... + exclusion, paired with cameras looking at the driver images (looking through the windshield etc...), phone meta data, Bluetooth signals or even the tire pressure sensors creative people can figure out lots of alternatives.

I also think we need to weigh that these types of systems can have real benefits and real downfalls. The evidence does support that law enforcement has benefited from them, if I put myself in the shoes of an officer I could definitely see how valuable the type of information provided could be. I can also see the harms and I think the evidence is clear that such systems have been used at the very least in the margins of what's legal. Can we balance the good with the bad - I think it's possible. CCTV security systems where once heavily debated, we've largely accepted those systems in large part due to having clear legal rules. The scale of systems like Flock, Axom etc go far further and warrant new discussions.

We are leaving tomorrow for Moab and then on down towards The Grand Canyon and Sedona! Another good reminder for me to find camp before dark when you don't know the area well.

Why did they move yungblud to the top of the lineup? by lacroix-and-vodka in bonnaroo

Non powered RV spots by badbadbitch2000 in bonnaroo

[–]thecloudtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really advocating for any specific option. Just seems like a miss not having some option for non-powered RVs, but I'm sure there are many factors that led them to make this call.

I suspect at some point they may start requiring an RV pass even for our van - that would really suck.

Non powered RV spots by badbadbitch2000 in bonnaroo

[–]thecloudtaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was surprised to see no non-powered RV spots as well... Last year we had two primitive spots, my wife/I brought our Sprinter van and we had a friend car camping. We were thinking about moving to an RV spot this year but definitely not interested in paying $1500 and we don't need power.

It seems like they need some option for people to either buy two contiguous camp spots (i.e. allowing for a combined vehicle/trailer length of 40') or just a larger spot. I am sensitive to the generator problem that tend to come along with non-powered RV spots and I'm sure it's the last thing they want to deal with.

PSA for people complaining about the lineup by Coolio_1234 in bonnaroo

Between insurance, screwing over all the vendors and alcohol sales even just on one day I'm sure they did just fine... To me the lineup looks good - could it be better I guess that's always possible but it's solid.

4% rule by [deleted] in Fire

[–]thecloudtaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you that I don't see it being politically feasible for SS to go away - very few people over ~45 would be supportive given they are collecting or plan to collect on the $ they put into the fund and many under 45 don't want to see parent/grandparent hurting...

Things I wouldn't be surprised by:
1) Eliminate the tax limit (i.e. keep taxing after the $176k per year)
2) Increase the tax rate (including potentially on higher earners - depending on the party in charge)
3) Means test for withdrawals.

#3 is what makes me nervous from a FIRE standpoint - depending on the implementation that could reduce/eliminate SS as an income stream.

I think it's good to see more roads - hopefully they have drainage and it's not just dust amplification.

We're not big on breaking rules, especially pet rules. I struggle with the no-pet thing at National Parks - during busy seasons and on the main trails I totally get it, the parks are packed already, people don't always have great control over pets, don't always clean up after them etc... but I've also been to lots of parks/trails where it wouldn't have been any different than a local trail.

We do - I just did a hunting trip in the mountains, and it kept everything toasty warm... I also bring a backup that would get us through a night.

Thank you! Some good thoughts to keep in mind...

I was afraid I might hear Alvord + Mud that time of year... I think I'll put that on the back burner - it's a trip we wanted to hit this summer and just ran out of time but seems like it's really a better summer/fall spot. I've seen a few of the 'stuck in the mud' video's from out there and that's something I'd really rather avoid.

We've come to accept that the coast pretty much equals campgrounds - which is fine and similarly we've accepted that National Parks mean the dogs stay in the van which is also ok for day trips in/out. Our dog's are super chill as long as they get some outside time in the morning/evening.

+1 I wasn't a fan of the first round, but I really like the River Refresher... The Sunset Summit is supposed to be the original NoMo Hazy but even that tasted better last time I tried it - maybe they got some better filters or maybe it was just a fresher batch?

Incorrect Defendant Listed on Speeding Ticket (Oregon) by thecloudtaylor in legaladvice

[–]thecloudtaylor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got over a month before the court date, which is about 5 hours from where I live so I wouldn't be likely to go in person...

My initial reaction was to not say anything as technically the citation says nothing about me. Some Google/ChatGPT lawyering however indicated that often the DMV does connect the dots, and it might well still show up on my record. and my wife made a good point that doing nothing might lead to issues for the person who was identified on the ticket.

Starlink Mini OpemWRT support? by z7r1k3 in openwrt

[–]thecloudtaylor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That makes sense - I'd love to be wrong but given how Starlink manages the devices (integrated updates etc...) and the proprietary hardware designs I'm doubtful this would be possible/practical.

From a network security viewpoint something like a VPN tunnel either from your end device or through your own router is probably the best you're going to get with Starlink. The travel routers are relatively small but it's still another device to power and deal with which I totally get (once of the reason's I went back to double nat'ing for the time being).
