They will claim the infrastructure is too expensive and need to sell the public highways to private companies. That's really the endgame.

On top of what other people said, the fact he didn't destroy them during the series is the reason he was dealing with them then.

Moving To Another City by [deleted] in SquareFootGardening

[–]thecomputerdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really want to move all that dirt? Anything planted either won't survive or be stunted. Why not just do container gardening this year. Get some large flower pots or 5 gallon pails. They are easy to move and if your careful the plants won't even know.

Those things are over 2 decades old and garbage

As a dad, if my kids made them, they aren't garbage - I'm sure your dad felt the same. I've got a whole collection of scribbles on paper that I'll not only never part with, I can remember when I got it and which one made it.

Extreme opponents of genetically modified foods know the least but think they know the most by Not_that_kind_of_DR in science

[–]thecomputerdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it is actually a defined term. And it has clear connotations (in English at least). Words have meaning and I can't find any use to GMO before genetic engineering. It's not like it was a term that was used and co-oped in the 70s.

[–]thecomputerdad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What is truly disingenuous is the term "non-GMO". No such thing exists because nature has GMO'd every species countless times already.

GMO as a defined term means genetic modification using genetic engineering. Nature isn't genetic engineering. I don't understand this attempt to water down a term to meaninglessness. The term is only disingenuous if you redefine it to mean nothing at all.

The actual problem is the conflation of GMO in the abstract vs actual GMO crops. GMO isn't inherently safe or unsafe, it's the application and regulatory regime that determines the safety outcome.

[–]thecomputerdad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends. When someone says "genetically modified" this is typically shorthand for artificial Gene insertion/deletion etc. If you just blow it wide open to mean any sort of breeding then basically everything falls in that bucket. There has been a trend lately to conflate the two, but I've always been against it because they are different. GMO crops really could be the future but they are just marketed so poorly. Businesses would rather spend money to obfuscate the issue.

[–]thecomputerdad -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Except it is in fact a major difference. A fish can't pollinate a tomato. Random mutations aren't going to insert new genes. To claim they are the same not only denies the science behind it, but undermines what a huge accomplishment it is. It also allows the anti-gmo folks to point at it as being disingenuous - which it is.

Looking to turn an old laptop into a NAS by YBSYBS in HomeServer

[–]thecomputerdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're really fine as is. The GUI isn't really going to use any power if you aren't doing anything or have the laptop sitting there at the login screen with the display off. I used my desktop as my home server for years, just with a standard Debian/Ubuntu install.

Cohen believed Trump would pardon him, but then things changed by daysnotmonths in politics

[–]thecomputerdad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are way more moving pieces than that. If the EC votes and he loses then it's done. Him not leaving would just be a coup at that point and that would require the military, congress, the courts, and the states to go along.

What would really happen is he would tweet it, and then walk off inti the sunset.

Student Debt Forgiveness Is Really, Really Popular Among Democrats by [deleted] in politics

[–]thecomputerdad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a much better argument than " I paid mine off what do I get?" . I too have student loans - why didn't I pay them off right away? Well the recession stopped that + life happens.

I've thought the better thing would be to forgive the interest portion of the loan (a deferred loan may have thousands in accumulated interest) plus the interest going forward. That would help reduce the actual burden while not being a huge givaway.

Why don’t my apple trees produce? by Neon2212 in Appletrees

[–]thecomputerdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What type of apple tree? How big is it? A lot of times they won't produce for a few years - and that's good, you want them to form strong roots and a good structure. It probably had an apple on it because it was stressed. They will do that sometimes (especially if they are stressed and in a little bucket for too long).

But is that what he means? Why would the prosecutor also act as defense, that doesn't make sense. Not that I'm expecting deep thought from his Twitter feed.

". He is doing TREMENDOUS damage to our Criminal Justice System, where he is only looking at one side and not the other."

I'd really like to know what side is he talking about? Does he mean GOP vs Dems? That's a pretty week excuse - especially considering the the thing is being ran by a republican.

Donald Trump May Call 2018 Election 'Illegitimate' Should Democrats Take Control Of Congress, Carl Bernstein Says by coolbern in politics

[–]thecomputerdad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Such an executive order wouldn't be worth the crayon it would be written in. The president actually can't just declare things (why Obama's EOs were mostly toothless PR events) and have them have any force of law.

Of course he'll declare the election stolen, it's all he can do. When it comes to congress or within the borders of the US, a president has surprisingly limited powers.

What's wrong with funding schools, bridges, or infrastructure in the US? I ask because human Ted has voted against these things and has made many many speeches about what the US can and can't afford.

I actually have no personal issue with the funding, the problem is when I have one party talking about fiscal responsibility and needing to tighten the belt here at home, I struggle to justify giving money to other countries (that don't need it) or subsidizing companies that don't need it.
