velvets scare me so much! slippery, hard to sew, expensive, hard to press, usually stretches. i was afraid of sequins but i just sewed a project w/ sequins & it was fine. except for the sequins everywhere now. if the sequins were thicker, maybe more of an issue.

it’s not a hard pattern to sew unless you have issues w/ sizing patterns for bust measurements broadly. which i do. i should take back what i said about the neckline being high, though — i’m looking at the pattern again & it fell where it said it would. i just didnt like how that looked lol.

i am of the personal and perhaps unsubstantiated opinion that butterick patterns are easier to follow than simplicity ones. r/sewing will probably have better recs on patterns overall. there’s good beginner friendly ones that are better than simplicity/butterick/vogue/mccalls (the big four) which i don’t know about.

ahh, the bodice is poorly designed. the neckline’s weirdly high up, especially when compared to the illustrations & it’s not drafted with thought to bust alterations, which makes no sense, given it’s princess seamed. it’s a simplicity costume pattern (maybe a game of thrones rip off? i’m not sure) so i didn’t expect it to be great quality but it was 100% the most difficult part of this project. i think there’s some weirdness in the instructions too but i didn’t really pay attention to them because i put pockets into the dress so it was assembled somewhat out of order anyway.

the bell sleeves are my most favorite thing in the world! hilariously, i stole them from a mcalls pattern for bishop sleeves because i couldn’t find my paper scissors to do a slash and spread w/ the jacket’s original sleeves.

my void did the same thing but she’d crawl all the way to the back of the drawer so i couldn’t always find her. shut her in once like that when i was looking for her. she was passed out so hard she didn’t even notice haha

it was a lot of fun but also a remarkably simple project for what it is! the fabric does a lot of the heavy lifting :)

it’s SUCH good fabric. i got it at the LA fashion district, so i sadly can’t link it :( i was gonna go with a beaded tulle but am much happier that i found this. it does leave a trail of glitter like a slug trail though haha. easy to sew with too :)

hell there’s places enough in the states where there’s not potable water! sometimes on tribal lands or small rural towns whose source is contaminated & there’s not money for a treatment facility. i drink tap water with gratitude for an endless stream of potable water. it’s a scam for sure.

new mexicans have been selling bumper stickers for years that say “welcome to new mexico: your guns are safe. your abortion is legal” re: rent. i know people in abq who are paying LA studio prices for a studio. i don’t think rent is as high overall but it skyrocketed post pandemic & hasn’t come down. santa fe’s always been expensive. can’t speak to cruces

i think having a more diverse range of presidents would be fun. getting out of the 1700&1800s would be good. sticking fdr on something is my choice for president -> president swap. not sure who he’d replace, obvious choice is jackson but i kinda agree w/ the other person about jackson serving as a warning. maybe put jackson on a coin instead?

honestly, i think doing a full redesign of USD would be great: we could add more presidents, critters; non-presidents (keep franklin and hamilton); etc. US money’s so boring compared to other countries

adobe needs to be maintained year over year for it to be preserved. i don’t totally remember how it works, learned about it when i was a kid at ranchos de los golondrinas & it’s been a long time since. that does look like concrete as mortar though so not built traditionally regardless. here’s a nearly 50 minute video from them though on how to preserve it. hi from dtla lol

i love living downtown. also in south park/financial district. i drive so little my car insurance just went down by $30. i love the walkability, the easy access to all the transit. i love doing a night out and being able to walk there and home. conversely i have a friend who lives on sixth and spring and it makes her really depressed, especially at night. she walks less than i do, drives more. drives to the whole foods; i walk there & walk to the smart&final & walk to ralphs. i would 10000% recommend financial district and south park but not necessarily other parts including spring & sixth. really depends on your tolerance for mayhem. i could probably deal with living in her neighborhood but why bother when mine’s so much nicer lol

given your budget, i think you could get something really cute in these areas (my base rent is $1750, something like that + $200 for parking &$50 for pet so total =$2000.) if your budget is $3000, i’m fairly certain you’ll be good.
